US have attacked Venezuela with missiles. This is unforgivable

fancythat Sat 03-Jan-26 16:48:09

The whole thing makes me feel uncomfortable.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 03-Jan-26 16:47:45

So USA in effect annexing and running Venezuela and - surprise, surprise - take over the oil industry.

Following on from their illegal attacks on boats on the high seas, where they have killed all souls on board.

The USA is out of control.

Trumps crazed outburst at New Year was surely proof he's completely lost the plot. Now this :-(

USA urgently needs regime change.

Nice to see yourself and Whitewave supporting a tryrant like Maduro.

I support the international rule of law.

I do not support the right of mighty nations doing what they like.

But of course you know that.

120 Members of Congress are now calling for his reservation,
Members from both parties

I wish the US military would just refuse to obey him.

Then what a load of court martials there would be!

A sufficiently high-ranking officer can attempt to dissuade his commander-in-chief (president or monarch) from a course of action, but unless the order directly contradicts the Geneva convention for warfare, and /or a direct ruling from the International Court in the Hague, he or she cannot just disobey a given order.

And not being either a civil or military lawyer, I am in doubt as to whether even if you can prove the Geneva convention forbids the course of action, it is wise or possible to say no.

After all, it depends entirely on the c-in-c if you can get away with declining to obey.

If the c-in-c is Putin, obviously you can't, and the way Trump is heading, I doubt he will put up with officers disobeying him either.

They could, of course, resign their commissions.

They could, of course, resign their commissions.

Perhaps the honourable amongst them will.

Assuming no reason resigning was not allowed.

Hmm , it was thought, at the time , that getting rid of
Gaddafi and or Sadam Hussein was a good thing, look how
that has all turned out. The exodus continues from both
countries

unconcerned
concerned

Autocorrect, not my word.

Perhaps most of us were not aware how bad it was for Venezualans?

Yes, it has been dreadful under the dictator Maduro and many Venezuelans have fled to other S American countries and to the US.
Perhaps Trump was becoming unconcerned about the number of immigrants fleeing there?

I'm not sure that such direct involvement is a good thing but this has happened in other countries and carried out by other leaders. Sometimes successful, but quite often causing more chaos and a vacuum which is filled by an even worse regime.

David49 Sat 03-Jan-26 16:35:04

Venezuelans will be better off without Maduro he has persecuted his own people for too long.. It was Syria 2 weeks ago, Nigeria last week, maybe Iran next week, he aims to rid the world of terrorists and tyrants.

He’s doing it because he can, it’s what his Navy and Air Force is good at - bullying those who cannot hit back.

MollyNew Sat 03-Jan-26 16:31:40

The Donald told Fox news today that American companies will be heavily involved in rebuilding Venezuela's oil infrastructure. That's what it's really all about - oil, under the guise of drug importation into the USA.

fancythat Sat 03-Jan-26 16:26:13

Taken from the DM.

@Venezuelans around the world are celebrating the capture of President Nicolas Maduro after he was flown out of the country and indicted on drugs charges in the United States.

More than eight million citizens have fled Venezuela since 2014 due to rampant violence, inflation, gang warfare and shortages of food and medicine.

As a result, the country has been left facing one of the largest displacement crises in the world, according to the United Nations.

So while Maduro's capture sent shockwaves around the world, jubilant Venezuelans spilled out onto the streets today to welcome the news with singing and dancing.

Many were pictured holding both US and Venezuelan flags in a gesture to Donald Trump, who ordered the special forces operation to capture Maduro.

One person celebrating in Chile said: 'I've come to celebrate because the dictatorship has fallen, Maduro's drug trafficking has fallen, and Nicolas Maduro and Diosdado Cabello.

'We are free, we are all happy that the dictatorship has fallen and that we have a free country.'

Another in Doral, Florida, added: 'Today, justice is being served. Justice is being served for all the Venezuelans who left our country to demonstrate who we are. @

Perhaps most of us were not aware how bad it was for Venezualans?

I would guess that a world without the current Venezuelan president has to be an improvement.

Plenty of people , worldwide and in USA, think a world without current POTUS in power, will be an improvement.

But you surely don't think it would be acceptable for Kim Jong Un (or any other leader) to remove Trump from power ?

Thank you Mamie

For those who are interested in an informed discussion, there is a "The Rest is Politics" special on YouTube at 1730 UK time. I have already learnt a lot about Trump, Venezuela, Machado and Maduro from previous podcasts.

Grandmabatty Sat 03-Jan-26 16:03:05

My son said that when he was in Venezuela the air stank of fuel everywhere you went. When it's your birthday, you get free fuel. However it's a very unstable country, ruled by the military and corruption is rife.

So can someone explain why Venezuela wasn’t exploiting its oil reserves before now? Does it not want extreme wealth?

Venezuelan oil is heavy crude and very expensive to extract. That and political problems has caused the industry to be unable to take advantage of all the oil it has.

Grandmabatty Sat 03-Jan-26 15:48:58

Trump has now said USA will be strongly involved in the Venezuelan oil industry reported by The Guardian.
There's a big surprise 🙄

GrannyGravy13 Sat 03-Jan-26 15:46:50

Whether we like it or not, POTUS Trump was democratically elected, it is not for us to call for him to be removed from office.

The citizens of the USA have their vote in the mid-term elections, let’s see the outcome.

How would you feel if foreign citizens were attacking our PM and making accusations of dementia and worse?

(I am not a fan of this POTUS by the way)

Grandmabatty Sat 03-Jan-26 15:44:28

Apparently The Venezuelan president will be put on trial in USA, according to MSM. It may be a good thing for Venezuelans to get rid of him, but it isn't USA's right to do this.

ronib Sat 03-Jan-26 15:43:17

The people are often the last ones to be asked. Gaddafi? Sadam Hussein?

So it might be - but that is within no one’s call but the people of Venezuela

AGAA4 Sat 03-Jan-26 15:38:11

The only reason for this attack is that Trump wants the oil. After seizing an oil tanker Trump was asked what would happen to the oil
His reply was I assume we will keep it.
Trump's allegations about Venezuela and drugs doesn't stack up.
