Remember when Dominic Cummings resigned and left Boris Johnson adrift? That's when the wheels started to come off the bus.

We'll see.

Why do I get the impression that some on these Boards are waiting gleefully for the government to come crashing down? Be careful what you wish for.

Exactly Ladyleftfield

I'm very pleased that McSweeny has gone but I fear that his successor might well be of the same ilk, even, perhaps, be a McSweeny recommendation.

I'm also wondering if Starmer has pushed McSweeny out, thinking to save his own skin. It might well be too late for that.

Already being discussed in detail on this thread.

Starmer still there MaizieD

I am not sure Sir Keir Starmer is going to survive the week.

If he does, he could go on until May.

I do think people are wondering whether or how long Labour will accept all the U-turns and ill judged appointments, even those where someone else is willing to take the blame.
Trump managed that by deflecting the blame for his error on an aide. Seems like a useful technique.

Casdon Sun 08-Feb-26 15:19:21

Oh, I’m sure they are Mollygo.

In the same way that some on these boards awaited gleefully for the last government to crash. Plenty said be careful what you wish for at that time too - look at the mess we're in now !!

Never mind popcorn, some posts sound more like les tricoteuses knitting round the guillotine.

Exactly.

I'm not gleefully waiting for the current government to come crashing down, infact I hope Starmer stays.

I am, however, gleefully observing the equivalent exchange of comments that were meted out on here to supporters of the Conservative government a while back. Admittedly deservingly, but it was pretty vile and acrimonious.

I think all the people who said gaily,' Well I voted for anyone who wasn't Tory' may possibly be reflecting on what they have done. 404 MPs with a cowardly leader at a time of international unrest. I dread to think what is going to happen; the options are all dreadful.
Starmer in place but not knowing what to do; Wes Streeting, unknown and inexperienced; Angela Rayner, God help us.

Why? Things couldn’t be much worse!

ronib Sun 08-Feb-26 16:20:01

I don’t agree that Starmer doesn’t know what to do. He seems to want to hang on as pm and has been given a lifeline by Morgan McSweeney. Whether it’s enough is anyone’s guess.
The alternatives may not be any better….

I’m wondering that too.
And surely the buck stops at the top, not the top’s advisor.Who knew that the plum job of Ambassador to the USA was in the gift of the PM’s advisor?😲

eazybee Sun 08-Feb-26 16:48:27

Well, McSweeney was Mandelson's protégé apparently.

I bet McSweeny was “persuaded” to resign with a generous backhander. Starmer then expects people to believe McSweeny was at fault, not him. It’s never his fault.

Maremia Sun 08-Feb-26 16:55:34

Time to start looking at whatever/whoever else McSweeney brought into Government.
Palantir would be a good start.
Don't like the idea of this USA military spy ware product sneaking around in our NHS data banks.
How difficult would it be to get rid of it?

Primrose53 Sun 08-Feb-26 17:05:39

Breaking News
it seems Starmer and McSweeny decided together it was time for McS to move on.

Indeed! What goes around comes around, the criticism of the Tories, was pretty fierce on the GN threads, not denying it wasn't justified.

I'm not really wishing for anything other than to have a government that has some competence especially in handling the economy, that would be nice. Bill Clinton coined it with "it's the economy, stupid!" the linchpin to prospective policies and their effects.

At the helm right now, we have a Chancellor, who is devoid of any business acumen, appears to have no foresight and possibly doesn't give a proverbial about what she's wrought on businesses with the most punitive measures. In hindsight this administration came in on a "we're going for growth" mantra. Definitely some ambiguity in that message, there has in fact been plenty of growth in businesses going to the wall, and unemployment rising as a result.

I just don't get his blind faith in the one party, maybe because I've never had an allegiance. They're all pretty dire quite honestly, I've no idea how I'd vote, it won't be Reform or The Greens.

Casdon Sun 08-Feb-26 17:50:15

I don’t think many, if any, Gransnetters have a blind faith in one party TerriBull? I think the values of different parties align to different people’s views, but we’ve all been around the block enough times to recognise that there is no political saviour on the horizon. We can only hope that the party in power does more things we agree with than the alternatives.
