Would you be up early on Friday morning to watch the Groton and Denton results?

In my opinion, the Green Party in any sort of power in this country is a far more calamitous threat for our future than Reform. My husband, who is very wise, told me very early this morning before I’d seen or read anything about the win in Gorton, that’ll be the Muslim voters keeping Reform out. Makes complete sense now ….

So what? All adult British citizens have a right to vote, irrespective of their faith.

Why would a Muslim (other than Zia Yusuf - who sold his business to a sanctioned bank which funds Israeli weapons manufacture) support a party with a flagrant anti-Muslim agenda?

If people don’t see Labour doing much for their community and found Gwyyne;'s behavour offensive (who wouldn't?) and Burnham's leadership bid poorly-timed, who are they going to vote for? An energetic young woman who cares about her community or a GB News presenter who would regard Gorton & Denton as Farage does Clacton?

The Green Party has an excellent video on how to make hope normal again. It wants profits to stop going up to the super rich, rivers to be clean again, for workers to stop chasing their own tails. Interesting…

Re ‘family voting’, one argument against postal voting, particularly in certain areas, was that the self-styled head of the household, almost always a man, would fill in all the ballot papers according to his own wishes, for all female members of his household. Either because they could not read or write English, or because for ‘cultural’ reasons they were not seen as fit to have an opinion.

This was proved to have happened in at least one area of London.

A very valid reason IMO for refusing citizenship and therefore voting rights to anyone whose English has not first reached a certain standard.

Here are the results numerically:

Labour were only just behind Reform, in fact overall Reform had a crashing defeat when you add Labour and Green together.

Your husband is bordering on some kind of racial blindness TheHappyGardener.

It took far, far more voters than the Muslim population for the votes for Labour and Greens to get what they did.

Its a classic white red wall northern population area with some young incomers seeking cheap housing as well as having Muslims living there.

Green Party - 14,980
Reform UK - 10,578
Labour Party - 9,364
Conservative Party - 706
Liberal Democrats - 653
Monster Raving Loony Party - 159
Advance UK - 154
Rejoin EU Party - 98
Libertarian Party - 47
Social Democratic Party - 46
Communist League - 29

I’m enjoying the more bizarre comments on this thread, it’s amazing how we go from a vote by only c40k people in one constituency to multiple red flags, conspiracy theories, misguided candidates, party failures, PMs resigning, voter fraud, and even mourning the loss of a plumber to politics.
😂👀

The new Green MP maybe be a very nice women, but this current Green Party and its leader with any power in government fills me with dread.

This result is proof-positive that it's high time for Sir Keir to fall on his sword. But I bet he won't.

No - we (I'm in LP) were expecting we wouldn't win mae. Many a time a by election has not proved to predict the next GE. Losing a by election is no reason to start dramatic sword falling narratives.

Just had to come on here to say that for the first time, for many years, I have a little hope for the future.
Having been a member of the Labour Party from the early sixties, until recently - I have watched with growing dismay as this party has been stolen from us and from all the generations of people and trades unionists who fought for it over the years. To make it worse we have to live, daily, with watching those thieves systomatically destroy everything Labour stood for

I cried when Leave got their minority vote through for our country and felt that i needed to apologise to my grandchildren when Trump got elected in USA. Increasingly felt there was little hope for the future for those grandchildren.

This morning, that hope has been a little restored to me. Lovely young woman to go to Westminster, hope she is the first of many, many more.

Wyllow3 Fri 27-Feb-26 09:09:56

Locally council wise, our Greens are very good, straightforward (not those who Galaxy allude to)

I suggest we look at the person before passing judgement.

Its my experience there is a great deal of variety of opinions on the issues that concern her, just as the Labour Party wobbled around for some time before settling on current policy.

I don't think " Asians" are an amorphous blob. Some of them , even women, can apparently think for themselves. Amazing!

My thoughts exactly.

A disappointing, if rather predictable result. Reform didn’t have the landslide some assured us would happen, which is a relief.

Some Green policies are good, IMO, but on the whole a Green government would be disastrous, I think. They tend to seem nice people, despite their anti-feminism, but it doesn’t feel as though some of their flagship policies have been thought through.

We have 3 green councilors in a neighboring town ultra left, they are causing a lot of trouble even with the LD majority district council.

I was posting what I heard reported on breakfast news, if ITV are incorrect I assume they will apologise and address their error.

My take on this by-election is that the electorate are willing to vote for anyone other than the main parties.

I think GG you have hit nail on head here. Conservatives- not viable: great current dissatisfaction with labour

= we'll vote Green, because she is a good candidate too.

In an election with as much publicity as this, the voters will have had far greater exposure to the actual individual candidates.

In addition, Matt Goodwin was a very extreme Reform candidate. Reform must have thought that was a good thing, but given what is happening across the pond, and the associations with Trump, ICE, and so on - maybe he proved too extreme. An academic who opened his mouth too often and in the wrong way.

ronib Fri 27-Feb-26 09:05:55

Hannah will be a real loss to the local community- she has cancelled her plumbing and plastering services and for what? I hope she isn’t too disappointed with her career change.
Glad that Matt Goodwin and Reform didn’t have an easy route to Westminster.

Galaxy Fri 27-Feb-26 09:04:55

Great the misogynists won.
Oh and in the same way as I predicted that mandelsson was a terrible idea, I predict so is polanski, every red flag
waving.

Grammaretto Fri 27-Feb-26 09:04:04

I can see I shall have to read up on the Greens. It was a mixed bag when the Greens were in coalition with the SNP in Scotland. Some really awful ideas but many sensible ones.

As someone said on the radio today, they're like Jeremy Corbyn but without him so more like old Labour values.

Unsurprised by the result. I’d like to apologise for the misspelling or bad autocorrect of Gorton in the title.
I hadn’t heard of family voting till now, but that wouldn’t surprise me either.
Maybe time for a one person at a time in the polling centre rule.

The win for the Greens must be all the sweeter, given the level of media support that reform get including the BBC.
