Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to pay £10,000 per person with a maximum of £40,000 for families of 4 or more as an incentive to leave the UK. These people are failed asylum seekers and have no right to be here so AIBU in thinking this money would be far better spent elsewhere? Surely having no right to stay means they should be deported and incentives shouldn't come into it.

I do like the sound of crossing the Chanel, I’d be off to Paris tomorrow, my £10k might buy me a couple of new outfits.

Dream on, Casdon, one simple outfit might cost €10,000.

My hopes are dashed!

They won’t DNA them because it will be against their human rights!

You beat me to it!

You two sound like Mrs. Harris 👗 but, of course, she raised her own funds to go to Paris, by working, saving, scrimping etc. No one gave her a penny!

I don’t think this is a new scheme, I’m sure it is recycled. Tories definitely tried it I think when they sent a lorry around telling people to go home.

I may be wrong, but I think financial assistance has always been available for those whose asylum claim has been refused. Asylum seekers can apply for asylum even if they have arrived ‘irregularly’ ( like in small boats). When the first claim is refused there are a few appeals which can be made, or other reasons it is not possible for them to return to whence they came, but if not, they can return voluntarily, and that is when financial assistance may be given. If they refuse to return voluntarily, then they may be deported, but it is certainly not a simple process.
In all probability, £10k per person would be much cheaper than the cost of keeping refugees here, court proceedings etc.
It really is a minefield, and I would be interested to hear how Farage and Reform propose to deal with the practicalities of ‘stopping the boats’.

I have recorded it but haven't watched it 😁

It is an absolute disgrace especially as there is no money for WASPI women, no money for those forced into DIY Dentistry, no money for 101 other things but hey, ho plenty for people who come here illegally.

It is just like winning the lottery for these people.

That’s what I read about it Daddima that it works out cheaper to offer them cash.

If only you’d read up about the pilot. And the money it’s hoped will be saved. WASPI women and provision of NHS dentistry are longstanding issues but I expect you think KS caused them

The problem is, would this be even more of an incentive to come here on a small boat?
If they’re accepted here then great, if refused asylum then it’s £10,000 each to go back.£40,000 for a family of four.

Dear dear dear me - if only you’d read up on the pilot before posting and understood who the scheme would apply to. But then, no contest is it between facts and an uninformed rant.

I have done thanks, initially it’s for 150 people, if it goes well then it will be applied more often.
😄🥂chill.

Not to anyone not already in the system it won’t. You’ll have also read then about her other propossls? Perhaps you could give your opinions on those as well?

Shabana Mahmood writing in 2015.

www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/10/i-spent-three-days-refugee-camp-heres-what-i-learned

Extract:

It does feel as though an age of chaos has descended. Crises everywhere, millions on the move, nuclear-armed world powers on different sides… and in the midst of the chaos ordinary people are running. You would run. I would run. They are running. We must do our part to help them.

Then along came Morgan McSweeney and Labour Together …

I have no idea how Farage and Reform would ‘sort’ things, but no one else has been very successful, have they?

You've got to want to make things work, and I don't think Labour particularly does.

Farage probably does, but I doubt whether he will get the chance.

The cost of paying a small boat smuggler to take somebody across the Chanel is between £15,000 and £35,000
What a load of tosh.
Top price now would be £5,000.
The only way you would pay that top price is by boarding a private boat in France, Belgium, Holland where you are guaranteed to enter the uk.

Can you imagine giving them 10,000 to leave and then 3 months later them reappearing for another handout.

Yes I can!,

It will be like a magic money roundabout.

As Leader of the Opposition Keir Starmer lambasted the Tories for not settling the WASPI women issue and promised he would deal with it if Labour won the next GE. When he became PM he does another U-turn and refuses to pay.
As for NHS dentistry I have no idea why the Government don't insist on newly qualified dentists, who have been trained using NHS money, working in the NHS for 5 years before going private. Seems a simple solution to me and wouldn't cost a penny to implement.

Allsorts Fri 06-Mar-26 08:21:01

It is a disgrace. Talk about putting a sticking plaster over a problem and still the boats come and now planes too , with Trumps WW3. Illegals are working in everyone’s roads quite openly and nothing is done, entirely dependant and exploited. by one of their own people.
