Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to pay £10,000 per person with a maximum of £40,000 for families of 4 or more as an incentive to leave the UK. These people are failed asylum seekers and have no right to be here so AIBU in thinking this money would be far better spent elsewhere? Surely having no right to stay means they should be deported and incentives shouldn't come into it.

They won’t be offered the money obviously if they haven’t been processed.
That’s what I was referring to.
I think it’s naive of some of the people on here, to think they all land at one point to be photographed & finger printed.
There are miles & miles of beaches.
Some of the locals have seen these men get off a boat & disappear.
Maybe they already have people here to help them, who knows 🤷‍♀️

I knew exactly what you meant Casdon.

^The cost of paying a small boat smuggler to take somebody across the Chanel is between £15,000 and £35,000^
What a load of tosh.
Top price now would be £5,000.
The only way you would pay that top price is by boarding a private boat in France, Belgium, Holland where you are guaranteed to enter the uk.

I read that migrants say they paid £2,000 to the gangs to get here on a boat, so you are right.

Guessing it’s less costly than a protracted appeal process.

I understood this payment is after the lengthy appeal process

Words fail me.
And there was no money in the coffers for waspi payouts. 😬

Good, we knew about the increase in state pension age back in 1994, things change.

The rest of the world must be laughing their socks off at us.

graciemabel Sat 07-Mar-26 14:18:30

They found thousands of pounds to get here ILLEGALLY . This country is led by incompetent idiots.

Barbadosbelle Sat 07-Mar-26 14:29:14

Ah, but you're reading this as a rational and intelligent human being which, sadly, aren't attributes that many of our politicians possess!

Absolutely the money should be used elsewhere - like on the NHS and where, maybe like a poster here today (re delay in hip operation), people could have their ops more swiftly.

These illegal immigrants weren't invited here and aren't wanted here. Most are able, fit young men who were in no danger in their own countries (and going by their footwear and phones weren't poor there either). They don't want to fit in here and do all they can to replicate the life and ways and beliefs of the countries they claim they couldn't wait to get out of.

Send them back with £50 max. And remember - however much they are gifted it comes from US. Which means that our Hospitals, CareHomes, Schools etc lose out.

Where is the sense in removing immigrants from safe accommodation and turfing them out in the streets ?That is a recipe for disaster with the right wing /reform led hatred on the rise

Sorry. But l don't understand your post. Are these People in question failed so called asylum seekers who we owe nothing to and have every right to report.

Not asylum seekers who are living in hotels and other tax payer paid for accommodation and are waiting for their cases to be heard.

SueEH Sat 07-Mar-26 15:00:13

So this is in the long run far cheaper than keeping people in asylum hostels/hotels. And, as far as I have read, anyone leaving would have their biometrics taken before leaving so they can’t get back in again.
I’m not sure exactly what many of the posters on here want? To spend more money on keeping people here?

maxmyers Sat 07-Mar-26 15:07:23

I used to work in this sector. I would echo the comments already made; it is not so simple as simply deporting failed asylum seekers, if it was then successive governments would not have struggled and failed to find a solution. As others have said, claimants use a variety of tactics - destroy their paperwork, falsely claim to be from countries which are war zones, falsely claim to be minors, go through countless appeals etc etc. The government is making a pragmatic decision in considering paying them to leave because ultimately it will be cheaper to the tax payer and faster-if it works. It is not a new idea and has been tried with some success in Denmark and will only be open to a strictly defined group. Time will tell….

icanhandthemback Sat 07-Mar-26 15:15:31

What on earth could go wrong! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Dreadwitch Sat 07-Mar-26 15:30:07

Bit they can still appeal and appeals take years... So they can stay while the appeal is in place.
But they will still be deported if they say no to them money, and it's a lot less costly than paying for them to stay, mostly in hotels that cost thousands a week.

Dreadwitch Sat 07-Mar-26 15:34:45

So who would live in those conditions for months even years to leave for 5k? And traffickers charge a lot more than 10k, it really wouldn't be worth their time and cost. And it's working fairly well in Denmark, the traffickers haven't invaded there in the millions.

It's also a lot cheaper for the tax payer, I mean I'm sure you've had a moan about the cost of keeping asylum seekers in hotels. You'll be getting better value for money this way and less use of hotels, taxis and other ridiculous costs we pay now.

Would it be easier if we legal citizens left and just continue to let everybody else in?!

Nannan2 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:11:24

Totally agree OP.👏

Nannan2 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:12:12

knspol- 😆😅

Jojo1950 Sat 07-Mar-26 16:51:13

Agree. No payment should be made except to make sure they have funds for meals for the first month. They chose to come here.
I. Am sure they all have family to take care of are of them on return to the home country.
No information is ever as it seems. I don’t trust the competency of our civil service either. Dim wits!

You do know Graphite, that some abscond into the distance. They don’t all rock up to boarder control.

Then clearly they wouldn’t be able to apply for the benefits.

Some posters on this forum were civil servants and certainly not Dim wits.
The Government makes the rules, the civil service carries them out.
