Will this help or will it create further resentment?
Does it create the perception that some groups receive special treatment.

Blossoming Sat 07-Mar-26 14:00:08

I think it will create division.

LauraNorderr Sat 07-Mar-26 14:03:39

Me too Blossoming.

MaizieD Sat 07-Mar-26 14:04:44

Some explanation of the thread title would be helpful

Witzend Sat 07-Mar-26 14:04:49

How about an anti-semitism tsar?

As so often, it would seem that some religions are deemed more worthy and deserving than others. Could it possibly because of sheer numbers, and the consequent votes?

Not that I’m a nasty cynic or anything….

GrannyGravy13 Sat 07-Mar-26 14:09:55

Just googled if Labour want to appear fair to all, then I assume we will also see similar Zsars for the Jewish, Catholic, CofE and all other religions…

LauraNorderr Sat 07-Mar-26 14:14:38

Sorry MaizieD, I assumed those interested in news and politics would be aware of this government proposal.

Boz Sat 07-Mar-26 14:16:38

The much feared May elections are coming up.

Will this hold up the Muslim vote?

Carry on Starmer - your time is nearly up and this is another nail in the coffin of Labour.

"Anti Catholic- Hostility Tsar "
They'd just tell us all to say a Mass for our detractors.....🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I'm lapsed but like all of us , indoctrinated in my early years so I know the rules of the game.......

It will cause division as there are other groups who are subject to hate.

TerriBull Sat 07-Mar-26 15:17:43

I don't think it's a good idea, no one group should receive special treatment, it will cause greater divisions.

I would back that up by saying hate crime to whoever it's directed at from wherever it emanates from needs to be properly dealt with.

Right now, because of their small numbers I think our Jewish population are really getting it in the neck, possibly more than any other group. I read a very heartfelt interview with the author Howard Jacobson in last week's ST colour supplement, who said something along the lines, as a Jew the visceral hatred in conflating Jewish people with the Israeli government was felt by many in their community and left them truly worried that history was in the making of repeating the past. Particularly when certain politicians are positively hostile to the Jewish community.

If there is so much hate that would determine that we need police to enforce the new law.
There’s a flaw in this idea. We don’t have enough police to deal with the crimes happening on our streets every day 🤦🏼‍♀️

A waste of time and money, and it will be divisive.

Oooh. Passive aggressive or what ? 🤔

Thanks for explaining what your thread is about... Oh, no, you didn't...

Exactly!

Anyone interested in this can always look it up for themselves, there must be something about it on the Internet.🧐

Whitewavemark2 Sat 07-Mar-26 17:30:11

So, do the same arguments apply to the anti-semitism tsar?

I’d be interested to know why if you disagree.

Which anti-semitism tsar is this Whitewavemark?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 07-Mar-26 17:49:55

Isn’t Lord Mann the anti-semitism tzar?

LemonJam Sat 07-Mar-26 17:55:12

MaizieD; "Some explanation of the thread title would be helpful"

LauraNorderr "Sorry MaizieD, I assumed those interested in news and politics would be aware of this government proposal".

I agree with MaizieD. The government has yet to unveil its plans as part of its social cohesion starry. there is a leaked draft suggesting a "special representative" will champion efforts across the UK to tackle hostility and hared directed at Muslims and those perceived to be Muslims.

LauraNorderr: Do you have any inside factual information over and above the leaks? Why do you think having a special representative to champion efforts across the UK to tackle hostility and hatred directed at Muslims will create division when the initiative is designed to do the opposite?

ferry23 Sat 07-Mar-26 17:55:44

Oh yes, I think he's a government "advisor" is he not?

Given his astonishingly low profile and I'm sorry to say no outcomes that I can think of (that's not to say there are none, but I don't recall being aware of any) I'm not sure you could possibly formulate a cohesive argument either way!

Maremia Sat 07-Mar-26 18:13:20

Is it such a dreadful thing to attempt to improve religious tolerance in the UK?
Do you wish for any disharmony to fester?

LemonJam Sat 07-Mar-26 18:20:23

Maremia 18.13 - I agree - it can only be a sensible aim to promote racial tolerance and harmony. We dont know the detail of the role so all we can do until the plan is unveiled is speculate.....

Lathyrus3 Sat 07-Mar-26 18:22:37

I’m all in favour if tolerance and harmony.

But as I was chopping up the veg just nowI couldn’t help wondering what will they actually do as in ferry’s observation about Lord Mann.

I don’t mean word salad stuff like “foster good relations between communities” etc.

I mean what could they actually do in practical terms.

I think it will probably be just one of those making speeches jobs that lectures people and yes - does just irritate them and create negative feelings.
