Happy Womens Day! We've come so far, and many around the world have a long way still to travel, there are still matters to be tackled here as well:

but here's a celebration of how good it is to be a woman, and appreciate what women in the past have achieved 🙂

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 08-Mar-26 09:04:58

Indeed , Wyllow, we have achieved so much together due to the determination of so many.
We stand on giant's shoulders.

Remembering my Mum, who I recall in 1961 had worked hard in her union to get what is now unimaginable - equal pay with her fellow male teachers.

Remembering how difficult it was to be "heard" in the 1970's in meetings and at work, at times, hitting head against glass ceilings.

Remembering and appreciation the efforts made to bring powerful women from the past to light again - in science, the arts, in churches....

Thanking the women (and men) who fought to stop sacking women because they were pregnant...

Lots to be happy about. Good wishes to you all.
(Yes I know. More to do. We'll get to that)

We have come such a long way……..read this!

The menace is the woman who thinks she ought to be flying in a high-speed bomber when she really has not the intelligence to scrub the floor of the hospital properly.'

This quote, written by the editor of the Aeroplane magazine published in 1941, was a common opinion regarding women in the ATA – the Air Transport Auxiliary. Unfortunately, such attitudes were not reserved only for this section of women, but most of those who participated during the second world war. Yet their skills, dedication, humour and courage in the face of adversity both home and abroad, helped secure the freedom we enjoy today.

Thank the Lord for equality, strong women and the men that don’t feel threatened by us!

Sago Sun 08-Mar-26 10:34:34

Oh I should add and a prayer for the suppressed women all over the world whose rights are being removed from them.

GillyMo Sun 08-Mar-26 10:43:03

I echo those thoughts sago. Thank you for the thread Wyllow3.

I still remember my mother, born 1918, being absolutely incandescent after she rang the tax office to enquire about her tax refund.

The man on the other end told her ‘This isn’t your money, it’s your husband’s.’ 🤬

This would have been late 60s/very early 70s.

And only just before I started working for an airline in the early 70s, the rule about female cabin crew having to leave if they got married, was scrapped. Their husbands wouldn’t like them having to stay away from home! Who was going to cook their dinners and iron their shirts??

Naturally nothing was said about randy first officers who slipped notes under your hotel room door, saying, ‘The door is open, come and kiss me goodnight…’

It’s also one of my DD’s birthday today, a significant one! She’s a fine example, as is her sister, of what women can achieve. No one messes with them! Plus their brothers are fully onboard, too. Win:win.

Happy IWD and happy birthday Mell and Viceversa! 🎂 🎂
