I'm obviously naive but I'm not sure what exactly the threat is that China poses to us. Russia has always seemed an enemy, almost cartoon bad guys but what about the Chinese? What should we be afraid of? They seem to have investment in all our infrastructure but so what? What might they do and why? We are a huge market for them. If they damage our economy they will also lose out as we'll not be able to buy so many of their goods.
I know I must be missing something but what?

China has a share in Hinkley Point nuclear, future Chinese investments have been banned on national security grounds.
Most of the UK nuclear industry is run by EDF - the French government. They are friendly of course but look after their own interests first.
Small modular reactors are being promoted as a nuclear alternative, but they still produce hot water for steam turbines which need a cooling system so have to be sited close to large rivers.
Politicians have halved nuclear power production in the UK in the last 30 yrs, the short term cost of gas being the easy option.

Geography very different between Hong Kong and Europe. Hong Kong had been colonised. Not surprising China wanted it back.

The difference is you cant question authority, you do as you're told, all companies follow Communist Party rules and targets. The police have complete control of the population, maybe some on GN would enjoy that, Im sure most wouldn't. Just imagine criticizing a Chinese Starmer it would get you jailed.

😂😲

…and we’re allowing them the biggest embassy in London that the world have ever seen, in spite of warnings from our security people.
Another disaster that Starmer presides over.🤬

Agree absolute idiocy.

We've been down this road before, remember David Cameron and Huawei, despite security concerns. We're presided over by self-serving fools who either have no foresight or more probably don't give a damn.

China is not a friend, they steal and replicate manufacturing ideas then flood markets with their cheaper versions of whatever they've appropriated. They're quieter than Russia in going about achieving world dominance by stealth. They have zero respect for human rights they treat their own people like automotons, devoid of any free speech. Hong Kong lost that after a while as no doubt Taiwan will they've definitely set their sights on reclaiming that island, particularly as it's a rich country much of its wealth derived from its electronic industry, semiconductors etc. Those will all be swallowed into Chinese state control and the world will look on as the Taiwanese lose all their personal freedoms.

He's not even close!

Now Albanese - perhaps, nanna8. He's much further left.
Good luck!

Do you get some sort of pleasure from insulting our leaders and our military. If so, please refrain as you are offending a lot of members.

If this article wasn’t so serious it could almost be laughable 🤦🏼‍♀️
China is very worried about its falling birth rate
This from a country that forced women to have late term abortions under the one child policy 😥

chinaobservers.eu/less-controllable-bodies-how-chinas-new-population-growth-policy-is-failing/

The fact that they could impose the one child policy itself ought to give @ Aveline and any others who view China’s presence and influence in the world as benevolent, pause for thought.

I would imagine it all depends on your analytical thinking prowess.

nanna8 Keir Starmer a communist! What absolute BS!

icanhandthemback Sat 28-Mar-26 14:16:27

I think you only have to look at Hong Kong to see why you don't want China to have such a hold as they have in places where they have invested so much money.

It's not just Starmer, the Tories too, we have run down our military below any effective level, EVs use there are more votes in social spending.
In exactly the same way if we reduce the level of Chinese imports, prices will go up, there are more votes in Chinese imports. We are swallowing the bait hook, line and sinker, we are addicted to cheap goods.

icanhandthemback Sat 28-Mar-26 14:19:56

Nanna8 is as entitled to their view as anybody else. Other UK leaders have been soundly thrashed on GN. We also spend a lot of time denouncing Trump which is offensive to a lot of people from the USA. Keir Starmer does have a very left wing background and some may not believe he has moved on. That is their right even if others don't agree.

SillyNanny321 Sat 28-Mar-26 14:20:38

Seems to me we have a choice (not) in who eventually rules our country. My Parents were always worried about the threat as they saw it from China & Russia. I think now we have a third force to reckon with! Islam! Any one of the many Arabic states will have the backing of the others when the call comes to all the hidden ones now in our country! As I am too old to live much longer it will be down to my Grandchildren to decide whether they should fight or give in! What will happen, who will win?

We get enough of these insults from Trump. Don't need them flying over from Australia.

mum2three Sat 28-Mar-26 14:41:19

China appears to be anti-Islam so, if it's a battle between the two for world domination, which will succeed?
All through history, there has been one empire after another....people forcing their culture on others (including the Christians).
Will there ever be a time when everyone is content to just confine themselves to their own country?

TerriBull Sat 28-Mar-26 15:13:01

I've never really understood the desire for world dominance, ultimately what does it achieve? It just puts me in mind of the rhetorical "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul" I think a few world leaders of today would do well to ponder on the wisdom of Jesus someone tell that to Mr Trump who I imagine would describe himself as a Christian. Whatever an individual creates here on earth they can never take it with them. So utterly futile, but clearly a hard wired human failing since the beginning of time.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain & Prime Minister Zi of China have been renovating their countries for uncountable years.

Prime Minister Zi is an exemplary rail track designer and Spain has the AVE high speed throughout most of Spain. Also, in return, Spain had provided Prime Minister Zi with ultra modernist Windmills that produce high energy and solar energy which Spain is known for ..

And President Zi is not in favour of what Trump has been doing and thus, avoids this type of aggressive and chaotic behaviour patterns as does President Sánchez.

Both are 100% against the disasterous violence, horrendous military aggression against children and women and both seek to avoid getting involved with Trump.

TerriBull Sat 28-Mar-26 16:33:49

Great rail track designer Xi maybe, however he presides over a country that executes 8,000 people a year, probably a conservative figure. Personally I'd trade his expertise in railway design for a premier that doesn't approve of state sanctioned murder, lack of free speech and concentration camps with forced labour. Just because he doesn't approve of Trump, not many do, that doesn't make him one of the good guys.

RosiesMawagain Sat 28-Mar-26 16:48:53

@ Frenchgalinspain I understand Hitler made the trains run on time too....hmm

WithNobsOnIt Sat 28-Mar-26 17:22:46

At the risk of sounding racist. Years ago. China used to be described as the Yellow Peril. Probably because they were so many of them.

The Chinese people just seem to act like robots and still do not have any real freedom of speech

I think AI is our biggest worry and not the Chinese.

Susieq62 Sat 28-Mar-26 17:28:42

My friend lives in New Zealand and I was visiting her. I commented on the number of Chinese living in her area which hadn’t been evident during my previous visit! Her comment was interesting,
“ Yes, interestingly I cannot buy land in China!” Said so much in my mind!
