......and he can take the US military stationed in UK airbases with him.

The 'Special Relationship' - which has always been a one way street - can finally be laid to rest.

How did Europe become dependent on the US for defence?
It wasn’t laziness: it was a deliberate plan starting after WW2.
There is a mountain of info online but I think this video explains it in such a way that everyone can understand.

Yes, it was: the Marshall Plan, which gave the UK resources when we were struggling post war, tied us to the US in arms, social and cultural ways:
They wanted to pay the Lions share to get the "Lions Control

Now it doesn't suit: they are struggling at home in a major way, aren't they? Groups of hugely rich billionaires, millions on the breadline and in need of medical help.
they are not now an Empire on the rise: they are an Empire on the fall, currently hitting out wildly to try and maintain control.

Most Americans don't want to leave NATO. Trump is an idiot.

Why would it be the end of NATO ?
We don’t have to be US slaves neither do we have to be their enemies We can review the friendship after ‘the vile one’ has gone depending who takes over.
The ‘ special relationship’ (was that a Thatcher thing ?) is just a load of nonsense anyway

It might wellbe the end of Nato because as far as I understand it, the US is supplying most of Nato's funding, and is the Western power that poses the grwatest military threat to those who might want to invade us.

Most of Europe have saved on defence since the early 1980s and has neither the weapons or enough qualified servicemen and women to pose a real threat to Putin and others of that ilk

Trump would have a job leaving Nato. He wouldn't have the bases in the UK and Europe. Congress would have to agree and I believe the members of NATO may have to agree but I'm not sure about that.
The US needs Europe so it would be stupid of Trump to try to leave.

NATO should have been abolished in 1985 with the break up of the USSR.

DrWatson Sun 05-Apr-26 19:59:23

To call Chump an imbecile is of course really unfair . . . .to imbeciles, who don't deserve that gruesome association.

His assorted rants about "don't need NATO . . .we're leaving" have been analysed on lots of forums in the last few weeks.

One substantial by-product would be a massive drop in USA's munitions sales to Western countries, which I daresay the saner voices in his entourage have mentioned to His Orangeness, in a quiet moment while GOB was having his diaper changed?

How would NATO cope without Trump's diplomacy skills? grin.

Do you really think that JD Vance will be a big improvement?

Not over many people, but a big improvement on Trump? Yes, actually, I do.
He has some obnoxious views but he has the ability to listen and to think - both of which Trump's conspicuously lacking in.

Already, troops are having to move out of some of their long established bases in the Middle East, which have been pounded by Iran, to the extent that the defensive shields cannot function.
Different issue to leaving NATO, I know.

friendlygingercat Sun 05-Apr-26 20:31:26

Apparently Trump sent an Easter message.

I am not Catholic or even Christian but I prefered to listen to the Pope's Easter message calling for an end to the conflict. He had been very outspoken of this war. And he has a lot more followers than Trump.

Thanks, Petra. Great explainer.

He will pull back from Iran and tell the world he made a peace deal, of the war he started, you couldn’t make it up.
America wake up and get rid of him one way or another the problem is look at what’s to follow from behind him !!!

Is it the rantings of a man with limited capacity ? After the latest swearing rant - has he completely lost it?

Size of active armed forces for 2025:

NATO - 2.1 million (without the USA)
Russia - 1.5 million
USA - 1.3 million

The US military is stronger than the rest of NATO combined. Without the USA, Russia will invade the Baltic states within 5 years.

Maremia Tue 07-Apr-26 08:22:50

That Russian invasion has already begun.
Plan was to reach Kiev in 3 days.
Four years later, still well behind target.
And now Zelensky is selling 'defence' to the Middle East.
We owe Ukraine, bigly.

I would give it less than 3.

Maremia Tue 07-Apr-26 16:01:49

Is the present seriously depleted Russia stronger than a combined European and Baltic states force?

fancythat Tue 07-Apr-26 17:04:37

I wouldnt like to put it to the test.
