There is hope and oil prices plunge it seems Trumps invasion attack plans are on hold if Iran opens Hormuz, we can hope.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Apr-26 06:16:38

What a relief for millions of people in Iran.

Let us hope Israel doesn’t scupper it.

Thank god some sanity has prevailed. Woke up early to check it, David dreading what I would see, but if it works out, it's a 2 week cease fire, an opening of the Straits of Hormuz. Interesting role for Pakistan in brokering the deal, but other forces had to be involved?

The BBC put it like this:

Iran ceasefire deal a partial win for Trump - but at a high cost

"The deal allowed Trump to extricate himself from what was shaping up to be a treacherous choice – either escalating with his promise that a "whole civilisation will die tonight" or backing down and undermining his credibility. The US president may have only bought himself a temporary reprieve, however."

"Whether such a jaw-dropping threat from an American president pressured Iran to agree to the kind of ceasefire they had previously rejected is uncertain. What is clear is that Trump's astounding, inflammatory declaration – just two days after a similar obscenity-laced Truth Social demand – is unlike anything a modern US president has ever levelled or hinted at.
And even if the two-week ceasefire does result in a permanent peace, the Iran war – and Trump's recent words
may have fundamentally altered the way the rest of the world views the US

Well Israel has made clear it won't change its attack on the Lebanon but has he said anything specific on not firing on Iran?

Allsorts Wed 08-Apr-26 06:48:32

Has he achieved what he set out to do? No
Have the Uranians gained in any way? No
What is has shown the world is that you cannot trust Trump!
His deranged foul mouthed rantings and threats has made him a laughing stock but with the capability to destroy another countr and his deeds have cost us all greatly. Israel has gone down even further than I thought it could. It could be the only country on Trumps side.
Americans seem to think he is great and any means justify the end,

Wyllow3 Wed 08-Apr-26 06:56:45

This is helpful, Allsorts, it was yesterday, but shows the range of US views on Trump's actions

Start a war so you can be the hero to stop it 😢

America will never again be seen as a respected nation. And quite rightly.

MayBee70 Wed 08-Apr-26 07:16:13

The civilisation that died was America. No one will look at it in the same way ever again.

Israel will do whatever the US allows because if the US restricts weapon supply it can hurt Israel a great deal.

We were up checking our phones during the night.

Starmer flying to the Gulf. At least one steady head will be there.

I see America as an important nation in the world. The fact that it has a president who does things I don't agree with has no impact on that.

He still has until (with luck) November. Imo other states need to stamp on him as soon as he starts to cause mayhem elsewhere like Cuba, Greenland and Canada. And he will.

Probably China, they want the war ended so they can continue to get oil and also so they can get into Iran to rebuild infrastructure as they did in Afghanistan.

Oh - the USA has been a significant influence since ww2, but that is definitely waning, and leaders like trump have merely pushed this process on.

We won’t live to see it but China will be the dominant force in the not very distant future, and conversely, Trump has also pushed this process on.

China has been the massive winner out of this debacle.

Wyllow3 Wed 08-Apr-26 07:23:57

When he's finished taunting and punishing Canada, Greenland, and reached stasis on Iran - for where from here? No plan, ever. Corrupt, and yes, insane. On that video above I posted on different US view, his supporters were a dumb "well he had to do something about it" knowing and understanding little, contrasted with the measured views "he needs to sort thing out here in the US"

Wyllow3 Wed 08-Apr-26 07:24:36

Oh - I forgot. Cuba is in his sights, big time.

Galaxy Wed 08-Apr-26 07:30:08

If that is the case WW and I don't necessarily agree, this will be

Galaxy Wed 08-Apr-26 07:31:34

Oops, that will be a situation that makes the current situation look like the rosy uplands so to speak.

nanna8 Wed 08-Apr-26 07:43:48

China already is the most powerful nation as far as our part of the world is concerned. The USA hasn’t nearly so much influence financially. The Chinese are much more subtle about things, though. They don’t go around bragging about their power.

So it can, David. The US funds a huge % of their weapons.

sixandahalf Wed 08-Apr-26 08:01:50

I hope there is some way out of this mess.

Well said.
I for one will never see the US in the same way, it has shaken me to the core and left me wondering which way is up in this new world order. Family in the US feel similarly but also that other nations tar them all with the same brush. I admit to feeling animosity towards Trump voters whom I see as criminally negligent but what can ordinary Americans who didn’t vote for him do. We have seen how ICE treated protestors and with FBI in Trumps pocket he is free to let his thugs reign without legal recourse.
Trump is evil no two ways about it and I don’t say that about many people.

Fallingstar Wed 08-Apr-26 08:03:24

I also think there has to be a new amendment in the constitution for dealing with sociopathic dictators who become president.
