Apologise for long post ahead. Having just read the code in the link provided by butterandjam 11.16 I think I'm with Graphite that there are grounds to investigate Farage who may have breached the code by way of his Cameo video content for financial gain.

As Farage has so often called for investigation of other politicians he should equally be expected to be similarly subjected to the same investigation scrutiny and take the investigation outcomes on the chin as he expects from others.

Also an investigation will result in findings that the Cameo videos are fake or real as there appear to be doubters in this thread. If the racist and antisemitic Cameo videos are proved to be fake the investigation will conclude so. You would think also that Farage would actively put himself forward for investigation after the Guardian exposed his Cameo videos if that was the case as well as accuse the newspaper of libel and seek financial damages.

Just restricting the investigation to the Nolan Seven Principles of Public Life and Rules of Conduct sections would help bottom the facts out pretty quickly and would be in the public interest in the following ways:

Selflessness
Holders of public office should act solely in terms of the public interest. Investigation- IS IT in the public interest for the leaders of a political party seeking to be elected to form a Government to make video content for financial gain that includes racist and antisemitic commentary. Needs establishing and behavioural standards upheld.

Integrity
Holders of public office must avoid placing themselves under any obligation to people or organisations that might try inappropriately to influence them in their work. They should not act or take decisions in order to gain financial or other material benefits for themselves, their family, or their friends. They must declare and resolve any interests and relationships. Investigation- CAMEO video subscribers sought to influence Farage to make Cameo videos containing racist and antisemitic content for Farage’s financial benefit.

Objectivity
Holders of public office must act and take decisions impartially, fairly and on merit, using the best evidence and without discrimination or bias. Investigation- FARAGE should be aware aware what is racist and antisemitic commentary and if not needs education, support and guidance and warnings not to repeat.

Accountability
Holders of public office are accountable to the public for their decisions and actions and must submit themselves to the scrutiny necessary to ensure this. Investigation- FARAGE is accountable for the content of his Cameo videos and submit himself for scrutiny. If he is not willing to be accountable he should not be in public office.

Honesty
Holders of public office should be truthful. Investigation- FARAGE should have the opportunity to admit and apologise for any the content of his Cameo videos shown to be racist and antisemitic.

Leadership
Holders of public office should exhibit these principles in their own behaviour and treat others with respect. They should actively promote and robustly support the principles and challenge poor behaviour wherever it occurs. Investigation- WHEN Farage was given a script to record racist and antisemitic comments he should have shown leadership and refused to do that particular video request. If he did not know this be presented with the opportunity to learn, apologise be educated and not to repeat his actions going forward.

D - Rules of conduct
1.
2. Members must base their conduct on a consideration of the public interest, avoid conflict between personal interest and the public interest and resolve any conflict between the two, at once, and in favour of the public interest. Which part of the reach of the Code and Conduct for MPs do you claim has been misunderstood butterandjam and why?

.

See "scope of the code"
publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5803/cmcode/1083/1083-1.pdf

"The Code applies to Members in all aspects of their public life. It does not seek to regulate
what Members do in their purely private and personal lives. "

Apparently MP's private and personal life includes their views and opinions, including ones they express on social media.

publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5803/cmcode/1084/report.html

"17. The Commissioner cannot investigate allegations solely about breaches of the Seven Principles of Public Life.

18. The Commissioner cannot investigate the following, unless as part of an investigation into an alleged breach of paragraph 11 of the Code:

a) policy matters;

b) a Member’s views or opinions, including those expressed on social media;"

Yes imaround, is scarily similar. You would think those presently planning to vote for Farage would look across the pond to the US where Trump has caused chaos and catastrophes not just in the US but worldwide.
I doubt it will deter the hard core voters though.
🤨

Graphite Sun 12-Apr-26 13:13:21

To be clear, my communication with Greenberg’s office was not about Farage’s Cameo videos although I would say that any allegations that these videos are fake could easily be resolved. There there will be a clear audit trail. Customer request, payment and broadcast followed by declaration of payment in the MPs Register of Interests.

My concerns were with what Reform MPs were broadcasting on social and other media during:

a) the 2024 summer riots triggered by the Southport murders,

b) rioting at Harehills, Leeds and

c) the Manchester airport incident involving a violent altercation between two men and police officers.

I said that there had been a breach of paragraphs 9, 11 and 17 of the Code of Conduct:

9. Members are also expected to observe the principles set out in the Parliamentary Behaviour Code of respect, professionalism, understanding others’ perspectives, courtesy, and acceptance of responsibility.

11. Members shall base their conduct on a consideration of the public interest, avoid conflict between personal interest and the public interest and resolve any conflict between the two, at once, and in favour of the public interest.

17. Members shall never undertake any action which would cause significant damage to the reputation and integrity of the House of Commons as a whole, or of its Members generally.

So when I’m told that the Commissioner is prevented from investigating a Member’s views or opinions, including those expressed on social media, I cannot help but wonder how paragraph 11 in particular - avoiding conflict between personal and public interest - is being policed by Parliament.

I suppose the short answer is that it isn’t and therefore Reform MPs and Rupert Lowe will continue to make posts which stoke division and public disorder.

Farage’s Cameo appearances were clearly a conflict between personal and public interests nor least that he found many hours in which to make these when he can’t find time to do any work in his constituency. The content of the videos also damages the reputation of the HoC and MPs in general. It’s cheap tat that makes a mockery of the position.

Fallingstar Sun 12-Apr-26 13:15:13

The thing is, just like Trump, no matter how much dirt is dished on Farage it won’t make a dent in how his supporters feel about him.
Remember Trump once boasting that he could shoot a man dead on the street and still be Mr Popularity with his voters.
Right now he has done worse than this in Iran and still I imagine his supporters think he is the best thing since sliced bread.

As Reform are proving so useless when elected in Local Government, surely voters will realise and they will never be in a position to form a Government?
Would Farage be re-elected anyway or have the voters of Clacton realised he's not interested in them and not representing them as an MP should? He's only interested in self-promotion.

twaddle Sun 12-Apr-26 13:28:38

That's just it, LizzieDrip. The more people complain about Farage's outrageous behaviour, the more his supporters just lap it up because they have exactly the same values and beliefs. Complainants just get called names such as "woke" or "lefties" and the more his supporters sneer and jeer.

twaddle Sun 12-Apr-26 13:36:25

Allira, I think the problem is that the opposition to Reform is fragmented. The Conservatives have shot themselves in the foot, Labour has "achieved" an unpopularity I didn't think was possible after its GE success. I suspect the Greens are seen as the new kids on the block who couldn't be worse than what we have.

I think support for Reform has reached a peak, but it has loads of money behind it and it could very well sneak in where the opposition is in chaos. I think that the major parties (including LDs and regional parties) will get their acts together before the next GE.

What worries me is the number of people who don't even appear to know that Local Government exists, let alone what it is responsible for.
Our local / regional social media is curently full of posts blaming the Labour government for the recent big increase in green bin subscriptions etc. Someone usually points out that Reform are actually responsible for these things in this area, not Labour, but it seems to go right over their heads!

butterandjam 13.05: "Apparently MP's private and personal life includes their views and opinions, including ones they express on social media".

I see where you're coming from butterandjam but even so all MPs actions even if deemed to take place in their personal life must not damage the reputation of Parliament. If so public duty takes precedence as the code clearly sets out. That is even if an MPs actions in his personal life have an adverse impact on public standing, if it violates standards or causes conflicts of interest the Parliamentary Code of behaviour comes into play.

We’ve seen this play out where MPs that have been suspended from the House and/or their party and in some cases even ejected from the House or their party for their behaviour in the private lives that falls below expected standards as public duty takes precedence.

Also the code does not stand alone, it clearly sets out it is complementary to other rules of the House, e.g. Register of Members' Financial Interests and The parliamentary Behaviour Code Whether the racist and antisemitic content of Farage’s Cameo videos occurred in his private life or otherwise is also up a valid consideration where views may differ. The code helps us in that.

Further many of the Cameo videos were visibly made in Farage’s HoC parliamentary office which in itself breaches the code and makes it more difficult to argue his activity occurred in his “purely personal and private life as MPs are not allowed to use their parliamentary offices for personal use.

Also Farage openly has admitted that the making of the Cameo videos was for his ‘personal pecuniary benefit’ which according to the definitions below falls outside of personal private life and can not be deemed a personal hobby.

B – The scope of the Code
The Code applies to Members in all aspects of their public life. It does not seek to regulate what Members do in their “purely private and personal lives”. The obligations set out in this Code are complementary to the procedural and other rules of the House, the Oath or Affirmation of allegiance to the Crown, the rulings of the Chair and the Ministerial Code. In addition, no Member is above the law.

Definitions to help distinguish:

An MP’s public life involves all duties as a legislator and representative, governed by the Seven Principles of Public Life. In contrast, personal life covers private actions, family, and non-political activities. While private, personal life can impact public standing if it violates standards or causes conflicts of interest.

Definition of an MP's Public Life:
Public life is defined by activities directly related to their role as a Member of Parliament, subject to the Code of Conduct and the Seven Principles of Public Life (Nolan Principles).

Parliamentary Duties: Attending debates in the House of Commons, working in committee rooms, and voting on legislation.
Constituency Work: Holding advice surgeries, visiting schools, hospitals, and local businesses within their constituency.
Outside Interests & Meetings: Meeting with lobbyists, trade unions, or holding outside jobs, all of which must be disclosed in the Register of Members' Financial Interests.
Official Communication: Writing to ministers, issuing statements, and conducting media interviews on political issues.

Definition of an MP's Personal Life:
Personal life includes private time, family relationships, personal finances, and non-official, NON-PECUNIARY activities.
Private Time: Time spent away from the constituency or Westminster, including weekends.
Family & Relationships: Time with partners and children, often sacrificed due to long working hours.
Non-political Personal Activity: Personal hobbies, shopping, or personal travel.

The "Grey Area" and Accountability
The line between public and personal is often blurred, particularly regarding integrity.

Conduct: The parliamentary Behaviour Code requires respect and professionalism, even outside formal proceedings.
Conflicts of Interest: Private interests (financial or personal) must not conflict with public duties. If they do, public duty takes precedence.
Scrutiny: Media and public scrutiny often extend to an MP's personal life if it affects their ability to perform their duties or damages the reputation of Parliament.

Yes- however I don't understand why his outrageous behaviour is tolerated, claims put forward his actions pertain to his personal and private life etc. He clearly does not put his public duty first and had no shame in making Cameo videos with racist and antisemitic content for financial benefit.

Graphite 13.13.

Thank you for your clarification. The racist and antisemitic Cameo video content- some filmed by Farage in his HoC office provides much more tangible evidence of Farage's actions falling short of the code and behavioural standards and were for personal pecuniary benefit. He knows this himself; as soon as the Guardian exposed the content Farage made a point oof making it publicly known he had "paused' his Cameo account. He said it was due to a "technical hitch" which begs the question, if true, whether he intends to unpause his Cameo account and continue with his behaviour?

The racist, antisemitic comments Farage made more clearly bring the responsibility of the Parliamentary Standards Commoner and the need for that office to uphold public into much sharper focus than his personal comments on social media, not for payment that the Commissioner ( rightly or wrongly) may clash with freedom of speech laws if relate to political views. I wonder whether the Commissioner received any complaints of the Cameo videos specifically.
