I watched it all, there is a summary on the page above.

He did quite a bit of challenging, more than expected.

Most significant:

Praised an Independent Judiciary. And the whole house applauded on their feet, not just the democrats. Mentioned the need for checks and balances on power

Raised climate change pretty strongly

Nato needed co-operation inc Europe not nations standing alone - he reminded the US on cooperation after 9/11.

Total need to support Ukraine (hint, hint)

Not to be inward looking.

This was one very very clever and well researched and written speech. Clear, articulate, and clever - It went down very well and he is clearly respected, it will be interesting to see what the US press make of it.

And on a more frivolous note, Camilla wore some really lovely clothes on this trip.

Beautiful flowing garments that wafted as she walked.

Very flattering.

I bet Charles was proud of her.

Amnesty UK dud not approve of visit.

Anesty need to grasp that there is more than one way to skin a cat ......

Diplomacy works better than hostility and has done with the King's visit. Amnesty are not right on this.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-May-26 09:30:53

Just heard on breakfast news that POTUS has removed all tariffs on Scotch Whisky into USA, as a thank you nod to the King and Queen 👏👏👏

AGAA4 Fri 01-May-26 09:36:08

The king and queen did so well for us. Trump shouted as they were leaving that 'we need more people like them in the US'.
They certainly do.

Rosie51 Fri 01-May-26 09:37:36

Amnesty should get their own house in order before they dare criticise anyone else, their hypercritical double standards for starters.

I've already stated up thread that I initially thought the visit shouldn't go ahead, but I'm very happy to admit I was wrong. It has been a great success and well done Charles and Camilla for pulling it off.

Does he mean monarchs?

It’s so true that Americans don’t ‘get’ irony. 😄

Amnesty UK dud not approve of visit.

I never thought that Amnesty were dim but obviously whoever wrote that must have no clue about diplomacy and not enough intelligence to have an insight into the veiled messages in The King's Speech.

Or do they not realise that this was not about Trump per se but about America becoming independent from Britain 250 years ago? King Charles representing the UK and Trump as POTUS representing the USA, not abut the individuals themselves?

Oh dear, Amnesty, I thought you were a tad more intelligent than this.

I had my doubts about the visit going ahead but am so pleased it did because our King did our country proud.

Me too. I thought he did an amazing speech.

I had misgivings but it was a triumph!

Well done Charles and Camilla.

And yes, Camilla's clothes were lovely she looked poised and elegant.

I am a supporter of Amnesty but although I understand their stance only too well, I think in this case the King did the right thing in going ahead with the visit.

If there there were any mileage in upsetting Trump by cancelling in terms of easing his murderous impulses to join Netenyahoo in the quest for genocide then there would have been a case for doing so.

As it was, King Charles was given the opportunity to make a speech which made it very clear to anyone with half a brain that he does not agree with or condone what Trump is setting out to achieve.

The only trouble is, of course, Trump himself is too thick to understand the subtext of the speech and he grinned like a moron throughout the speech.

And, unfortunately, whoever wrote the Amnesty piece didn't understand either.

I'm not one for thinking women in power should be seen as clothes horses but I must say Camilla looked fantastic! She showed Melania a thing or two about ageing stylishly.

I'm not a fan of the whole Royal thing but this visit was a triumph for the Royal couple.

I am afraid that much of it though, will be lost on the Amercan ego...they really haven't a clue and they all looked like a complete bunch of amateurs, even to having the Union flag upside down several times...

Yes, Camilla looked lovely - and she is 78!
Melania is only 56 and she looked lovely too, added to which she is very tall - and she was a model 🙂

Allira Fri 01-May-26 11:47:58

Oh dear, I didn't notice the flag blush 🇬🇧

He is a moron.

Our King did his job extremely well, both he and Camilla conducted themselves professionally and spoke with integrity.

The Trump is too stupid to understand that our K&Q were doing their job, they’re not his mates!

Melania may well have been a model, but her clothes often seem badly fitted to her body shape /height. Or she gets the shoes wrong. Presumably her outfits are designer made to measure, she employs a wardrobe advisor?

I'm reminded of Sarah and her daughters; (and Meghan) much money spent only to miss the target.

Camilla and Charles looked perfectly presented and stylish in immaculately tailored outfits. They really know how to wear their clothes.

I hope that chic one-upmanship wasnt wasted on the Americans

Samwam Fri 01-May-26 13:49:00

Viva la Republique!

Not my king, queen. I didn't vote for them.

Gordon Brown wrote in the New Statesman that there should be no cover up of Andrew, his huge spending habits as trade envoy, making money for himself, dodgy business dealings, his friendship with Jeffery Epstein. The late queen and Charles, William were told about Andrews activities but didnt want to know, they knew about him and hid it. A cover up.

So what do you think of Charles now just protecting the monarchy his privilege, and not the country.

I do hope that the U.K. doesn’t twiddle around, still thinking that we can save this special relationship.

We can’t.

Not even I suspect if the Democrats get in next time.

We must plough our own furrow and look to our best interests, both in defence, trade and geo-political relationships.

Canada is doing just that, and looking towards Europe. We would be sensible to follow this example.

Totally agree. IMO our 'special relationship' dissolved some years ago.

I look towards the European leaders now, and Canada.

King Charles did his mother proud, I think - her years of training him have finally paid off it seems. Although I suspect she would have had a snarky comment for Trump if he had dared to put words in her mouth or call her 'Elizabeth'.

Luckygirl3 Fri 01-May-26 15:16:31

I don't think anyone can feel happy about Andrew and how the royal family have handled it.

But on this occasion Charles has done a good job.
