I watched it all, there is a summary on the page above.

He did quite a bit of challenging, more than expected.

Most significant:

Praised an Independent Judiciary. And the whole house applauded on their feet, not just the democrats. Mentioned the need for checks and balances on power

Raised climate change pretty strongly

Nato needed co-operation inc Europe not nations standing alone - he reminded the US on cooperation after 9/11.

Total need to support Ukraine (hint, hint)

Not to be inward looking.

This was one very very clever and well researched and written speech. Clear, articulate, and clever - It went down very well and he is clearly respected, it will be interesting to see what the US press make of it.

Not my king, queen. I didn’t vote for them

None of us did. But I would have done if I could.

And they are our King and Queen, whether you like it or not.

But maybe we should be able to vote for them?

Oh! I have just read about the 1944 submarine bell presented to the narcissist by Charles - what a stroke of genius whoever thought of that.

And Charles' so witty comment,
Should you ever need to get hold of us, just give us a ring!

Not my king or queen either as I'm European, married to an English man, but I like them and the RF in general. (with exceptions)
I especially admire Camilla's work in highlighting victims of Domestic Violence.
Abd yes, she dresses so well for her figure and age

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 02-May-26 13:49:40

I'm a republican ( the British sort) and an Amnesty supporter, but am happy to say that, on this occasion, Amnesty were completely wrong, and King Charles was completely right in every way.

It was really a master class in how to do it. Feel very proud of the King and Queen.

He delivered a great speech, rather witty.
I think he looked as though he enjoyed his visit to the USA.

Wyllow3 Sat 02-May-26 18:41:01

The current leader of NATO - (R4 news just now) praised King Charles on his subtle but effective approach.

This is in relationship to Trump stamping his toddler foot and reducing the number of US servicemen and women in Germany by 5.000.

This is hardly significant given that 31.000 will remain, a pretty token gesture, but it was done by Trump for a remark made by Merz against Trumps war in Iran.

WithNobsOnIt Mon 04-May-26 15:27:32

I am not a Royalist but l.must say that King Charles and Queen Camilla did an excellent job on their visit to the USA.

Giving Trump the gift of a British ships bell from WW2 was sheer genius. Trump was really chuffed that he was having his massive ego stroked. He visibly lapped it up.

And Charles closing quip.about giving us a bell if USA was very British sense of humour joke.

All l can say to Charles is that his mother would go been proud of him and Camilla.

Or as Trump would say "He did a great job"

To use an RN expression β€˜Bravo Zulu’ Sir(e). Means well done and really should be followed by β€˜splice the mainbrace’ (be issued with a free tot of rum to celebrate a very difficult job completed highly successfully)

I read recently that the subs bell was known as the bell-end......... priceless gift to Trump!

Loved the reference to HRH being the King of Canada too ... that was an especially fantastic dig that seemed to go right over Orange Mans head

It is not a Naval expression.

It is a social media term.

Casdon Mon 04-May-26 18:10:46

It’s a slang term, but it was around pre social media. Be careful though Luckygirl3, I got it in the neck for using it on this genteel site to describe he who is now known in slang as Nacho, and stars in a pack of Top Trumps .

Casdon Mon 04-May-26 18:25:42

This will make your day if you haven’t seen it already. Diaper Diplomacy.

I first heard it in the mid 70's within a fishing fleet community...no social media then!

Not the Senior Service then!

I loved the King’s comment during his speech where he pointed out to Trump that Americans could now be speaking French, if we Brits hadn’t helped out. I doubt Trump has ever studied history.
