How did you vote and why today

Obviously some will choose to keep that to themselves. But I went to the polls feeling very angry today.

Local government elections are meant to be about local issues, but inevitably they do reflect what is happening nationally, but this year I feel national issues completely hi-jacked the whole local government process, Todays local elections are being seen and have been treated in the media as a proxy national elelction to confirm or undermine our current governments legitimacy.

The papers are full of long analysese of this govenment, what it has not done since being elected, how long Keir Starmer can stay as PM, the back biting and infighting between contenders for his job. Local issues, what matters to us in our towns villages and rural areas. schools, potholes rubbish collection , who cares about that when we can have another photoshoot of KS, or another story about Angela Rayner

Anyway, i was so fed up I deserted the party I have voted for for the last 60 plus years and gave all my votes to the independents, one only 18. They seemed to be the only people in this whole shamble that cares about us, the people living in these different council areas and write to us about local issues.

Why would she. People on here have been warned about their behaviour towards her, many people would not want to share their insights after that.

Where was the "warning"?

Well, I feel perfectly at liberty to comment on politics in other countries, including Australia, if I wish to.

Yes but you're British, don't you know the rules are different for Brits, unless of course they emigrated some years ago when they lose that entitlement? Do catch up Allira, please don't let the side down 🙄

Oh, good morning (nearly afternoon, just catching up).
It's Australian Mothers' Day today - so Happy Mothers' Day to any Australians who may still dare to venture on here
💐

LemonJam Sun 10-May-26 11:47:11

I for one would love Australians to venture on here to compare political views and experiences- as I've outlined in some posts yesterday.

The UK and Australia have a lot in common share also many problems and political tensions- e.g. high immigration levels, declining trust, political polarisation and voter shifts away from the 2 main political parties, energy transition and climate change challenges, dissatisfaction around healthcare and aged care, trade tensions, balancing employee's rights, how should the country treat asylum seekers and children in detention centres, alongside Human Rights Acts.

I sincerely would like to understand why Australia has had a stable Centre Left Coalition Government for some years, now in second term, public approval polls stable and is bucking the voter trend towards populism.

So welcome Australian friends- come and debate with us 😊

I'm concerned at the Australian government's apparent stance on transwomen. Womens rights don't seem to be respected there.

AGAA4 Sun 10-May-26 12:06:18

It's good to hear from grans from any part of the world not just Australia. The input from our American grans has been very useful as has that from Europe and other parts.
Haven't seen Canadian gran posting lately?

Maremia Sun 10-May-26 12:49:23

There used to be one from Switzerland. She had a lovely username.

There was an Jewish Israeli poster who was bullied off the site because posters in the UK knew more about life in Israel than she did, and some comments were pretty antisemitic.

Aveline- good to heard from you. Women's rights are also an issue here in the UK.

What is the Australian government's stance on transwomen and Women's rights generally?

nanna8 Sun 10-May-26 14:35:00

I have no idea what stance Australia has on trans women. I just live here. No discussions on this in recent memory. Who cares , they are people aren’t they ?
I actually like our PM and voted for him but I cannot stand yours and think he has destroyed the Labour Party in the UK.
Am I allowed to have this opinion? Clearly not, so in future I will mind my own business because I am not welcome as has been made abundantly clear by many ( not all and thank you for those of you who don’t mind foreign people having opinions) .
👋

LemonJam Sun 10-May-26 14:52:11

Nanna8- I'm glad you're back and posting.

Yes trans people are just people- I agree.

Many here are currently expressing their adverse views about Starmer. He has not lead the country well domestically in m view though I think he has performed better on the world stage. ) But there are many varying views and it's a contentious issue here in the UK right now.

You are welcome to express your views.

twaddle Sun 10-May-26 14:57:09

nanna8, I don't agree with you about Starmer, but I value your contributions, so keep posting!

By the way, I 100% support your view about trans people. They're just people. Women's issues as a whole include many other topics, which are far more important to me.

That’s a shame 😳

Allira Sun 10-May-26 14:59:07

Please don't go nanna8

I think we got the message you're not that keen on Starmer 😁 and it seems many in his own party agree with you now!!

Yes, apparently Farage is popular here 😲 as the elections just proved but, as you rightly pointed out, not generally so on Gransnet so GN may not be reflective of the country as a whole.

That does not mean you would be a Farage supporter either as most would realise.
Or, heaven forbid, Pauline Hanson.

We had several overseas posters, some born here with links to the UK and others who were not and their views are welcome. If they all stop posting it could become very introspective.

Hope you had an enjoyable Mother's Day.

No!!!! Dont go.
Even GN backs you up. Big time.

I may not have commented before as assumed you would stay.
Have no idea why people keep commenting on you living in Australia.

As others have said, posters on GN comment all the time on Americans for example.
And any other Country they like.
How many GN posters actually live in the US? About 3?

I read that Australia legally protects transgender people against discrimination, harassment and violence and supports legal gender change. We also have Human Rights protections here too.

I read that an Australian 2024 Federal Court case ruled that excluding a transgender woman from a female- only app was unlawful discrimination, and reinforced protected gender identity regardless of biological sex arguments.

I've read that Australia is one of the more LGBTQ+ friendly communities in the world.

That Nanna8 lives in Australia and she recalls no transgender discussions in recent memory is heartening. It's good to hear from around the world.

Yes, she was continuously harassed, and I miss her input.

Galaxy Sun 10-May-26 15:25:10

Yes women should have nothing of their own. Sal grover who is the woman mentioned is being supported by many in the lesbian community. She is currently appealing the judgement. Obviously many lesbians feel it is deeply discriminatory to not be permitted to organise without men. Men are not women.

Yes. That was Philippa . She lived in Tel Aviv and was a British / Israeli dual citizen. I remember her describing daily life in Israel and how her friend had a daughter who was being held hostage.

It makes me cross when posters conveniently can't remember those threads, or worse still disbelieved that poster, thinking that their own keyboard research was always superior.

Philippa was harassed and her views discredited just because she was Jewish. And didnt live in the UK. Of that I'm sure.

Nanna8 please keep posting!

As I posted on another Thread, the strange thing is that, when Starmer said he was staying in post, the value of the pound rose.

I think that is because Starmer and Reeves are city finance/big business friendly. They've given big money a very easy ride. Perhaps they're relieved at no immediate prospect of a more left wing leader.

" bullied off" She may just have got fed up and left.

MaizieD Sun 10-May-26 15:46:48

I think you are possibly misremembering.

I don't think it was here Jewishness, it was the hard line she was taking about the retaliation in Gaza. Her line was understandable, but not universally popular on here.
