Obviously some will choose to keep that to themselves. But I went to the polls feeling very angry today.

Local government elections are meant to be about local issues, but inevitably they do reflect what is happening nationally, but this year I feel national issues completely hi-jacked the whole local government process, Todays local elections are being seen and have been treated in the media as a proxy national elelction to confirm or undermine our current governments legitimacy.

The papers are full of long analysese of this govenment, what it has not done since being elected, how long Keir Starmer can stay as PM, the back biting and infighting between contenders for his job. Local issues, what matters to us in our towns villages and rural areas. schools, potholes rubbish collection , who cares about that when we can have another photoshoot of KS, or another story about Angela Rayner

Anyway, i was so fed up I deserted the party I have voted for for the last 60 plus years and gave all my votes to the independents, one only 18. They seemed to be the only people in this whole shamble that cares about us, the people living in these different council areas and write to us about local issues.

Well I've managed to find Philippa's comments. Nice lady.

I haven't read the threads and have no intention of doing so but as the lady is no longer around so cannot defend herself, maybe we could refrain from making comments about her. There have been lots of people on here who are less than kind and this can be challenged in numerous ways but once they have left the forum, that should be that.

Anyway, the original question was about voting in the recent elections so maybe we could get back to that as I thought it was bad form on Social Media to hijack a thread with other things.

Well said.πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Thank you for accusing me of all those things. Less than kind you say?

I haven't accused you of anything, I only included your comment as you have made a comment about the character of a person who isn't around any more. From there on in it was an ask for everybody to get back to the original topic so if you thought it was only directed at you, I apologise for not making it clearer.

We voted for the person we felt had our best interests at heart which meant changing the way we normally vote. Unfortunately, many other people also changed the way they vote on, what we consider to be the "anti" issues nationally which leaves our area vulnerable to the wrong decisions being made for our community. Our voting system is good but you can't account for the foolishness of others.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 12-May-26 07:23:26

I agree with you Sarahr. Some new appointees will, I'm sure, rise to the challenge and serve their area well. However, experience in Kent has shown that sometimes, new councillors, unknown to their community, were poor choices, elected by voters desire to indicate displeasure with government, and do not serve the voters well. As we have learned, a significant number have resigned/ been removed already.

Oh, were these elections local elections? I thought they were all about central government, at least everything I saw and read was all about them being about central government.

That is why I voted for the three independent candidates with out knowing a thing about them.

Well, they must have been about central government because Reform used them to call for the PM to be thrown out….

The number of Reform councillors who are being suspended for various reasons is extremely concerning. These are people voted in to run our local services and who are an important piece of our our democracy. Two in Worcestershire have been suspended, one in Plymouth and one in Essex also suspended and this is in a matter of days after the election. I understand that people have the right to vote to show their anger against existing parties but I wish they'd at least find out for whom they are voting and what they have to offer in such important roles if elected!

icanhandthemback Tue 12-May-26 09:38:12

The local elections have definitely been used to vote against the Government rather than looking at local issues. We had very little literature regarding what the local candidates were standing for (despite my efforts to find some) so this played a part in my decision too. However, as my vote has been discounted, whatever I voted made no difference whatsoever!

Wyllow3 Tue 12-May-26 09:41:37

I cant say I am surprised.

No way was there time to vet:

But what it does show the people who put themselves froward were either utterly ignorant or utterly unconcerned

and didn't give a d* about their voters whom they courted so assiduously.

the Plymouth one - checked it out.

"Newly elected Reform UK councillor in Plymouth suspended after viciously racist and antisemitic posts.

Some of these posts had been called out before the election, but Reform nevertheless ran him as a candidate.

As reported in The Times on April 23, Ben Rowe urged protesters throwing bricks at police defending a mosque to "get rid of that filthy building" during the 2024 Southport riots.

Commenting beneath a YouTube video in February of this year, he accused "the Jews" of "creating division by forcing other races on our societies

He also referred to migrants as "rats".

Wyllow3 Tue 12-May-26 09:44:24

Reform knew and still ran with them. But have we seen this in the DM?

No.

I have checked. No Telegraph either, but yes, in the Times.

Tice on Laura K on Sunday seemed to be defending the newly elected Reform councillor who had said something appalling about Nigerians.

Reform is a racist antisemitic organisation that whips up hatred and division. This is the last thing we need in this country.

Kandinsky Tue 12-May-26 11:09:03

The Green Party has admitted that its leader Zack Polanski has, until recently, been living on a houseboat in London and may have failed to pay council tax

Jyst to balance things out grin

But it’s a smear campaign, AGAIN!

Had to turn him off, despicable person. Patriotic but lives half the year in Dubai.

AGA, not again. Predictive text.

Kandinsky, I am interested in your description of " balance". My understanding of balance is that these are items of equal weight.
Mr Polanski not paying the correct tax is extremely reprehensible.
Reform candidates denying the Holocaust, suggesting that certain people of colour could be recycled to fill in potholes, or having been found guilty of assaults on his wife, and putting out cigarettes on his children seems somewhat weightier than tax evasion to me.

Kandinsky Tue 12-May-26 13:16:22

Chocolatelovinggran
Yes you’re right.
It was more about balancing out the negative posts regarding each party rather than the actual content.

Reform and the Greens are as bad as each other, come to that so are Conservatives and Labour, A curse on all their houses.

Galaxy Tue 12-May-26 15:49:59

I am happy to list the green councillors who are being investigated for anti semitism, two at least where there are police involvement. I tend to think of attacks on Jewish people as reminiscent of a particular time in history.

M0nica Tue 12-May-26 18:00:57

Reform and the Labur party have one thing in common. They are both anti-semitic

Do you believe that KS is anti-Semitic?

M0nica Wed 13-May-26 13:07:45

I said the parties, not named indivduals. Obviously not every member of the Green or Labour parties ar anti-semitic. But there is clearly a strong thread of anti-semitism in both parties.

FranP Mon 18-May-26 00:50:22

Our area is not on the cycle this year, due next. None of the reports mentioned the areas that were not up for elections. But my ward seldom gets to vote because he gets elected unopposed.

We are due for a reorganisation across East Anglia so the results are irrelevant as it will all change again next year

Yes sad that local issues are often ignored between national elections.
