The King's Speech To Announce 'All But The End Of Leasehold System' System'

Exactly meaning what? It's either being done away with or it's not?

Just how many fences is Starmer trying to sit on?

And, as noted in The Guardian, resigning soon after the Speech will leave the King with egg on his face and all the proposed bills up in the air.

More promises kicked down the road - all parties are, as usual, playing the Jam Tomorrow game.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the pomp and ceremony Samwam and I'm wondering if you couldn't have written a more insulting post if you'd tried.

Every word is true though.

Oh, I'm sure she/he could.

We've been infiltrated by Republic, I think - yet again.

I am a pragmatic Monarchist but that venom is enough to make me more, not less, Monarchist.

If that is typical of Republic, I shudder to think what this country would be like with them in charge.

It's the unadulterated truth not venom, talking truth to power, unelected unaccountable power so there

Smileless2012 Wed 13-May-26 18:04:28

It may be your truth Samwam but it isn't unadulterated truth and came across as very venomous to me.

I thought the king didn't look well today or is he just sick of all the mess being made here and abroad.
Sorry for going off track.

The crown weighs 2.23 kilos (4.9lbs in old money) so perhaps that was weighing him down!

Of yes 🤔
Absolute power!

Allira Wed 13-May-26 18:37:06

Oh yes, not Of

Watching Kemi in our democratic Parliament, got distracted.

AGAA4 Wed 13-May-26 18:38:48

Maybe Allira I hope he isn't feeling poorly but he has been to the US recently to spend time with Trump.

Allira Wed 13-May-26 19:29:32

That's enough to make anyone feel under the weather.

Exhausted, perhaps, and jet-lagged possibly.

That's what my husband said when I commented that KC didn't look well.

Neither of us is either pro or anti-monarchist, but surely anyone can sympathise on a human level with an older man who looks (and is) ill, but still doing his duty?

Lemnjam The point I was making is that the leasehold system needs reform as your example shows, the case you uote is one of the recent abuses of the system that have brought it into disrepute, but many, possible the majority of the leasehold properties in this country date back 50 or 100 years or more and most of them work perfectly well. The leasehold system does have flaws, but abolition will cause more problems.

Why do you think it’ll cause more problems??

If you loathe living in a country which retains a monarchy, why not move to a republic?

I’ve no strong feelings one way or the other, other than the land they collectively own, I’d actually feel very sad to see all our age old traditions disappear, it’s one of the things which gives our country its “uniqueness”

I thought Charles looked alright actually, not any different to normal. He always looks better when he smiles but it wasn’t that kind of event.
I have to say that I think Kemi B’s dresses are really lovely, so stylish, the lilac number today was especially lush.

Getting back to the OP, "All but the end of the leasehold system" "Exactly meaning what? It's either being done away with or it's not?"

The leasehold (known as feudal) system was abolished in Scotland some 20+ years ago. Leasehold/feudal law is hugely complicated and wide ranging and in some instances it proved beneficial to keep some of the feudal protocols intact. Far too involved and complicated to go into here but plenty of information if you care to Google "Scotland feudal system abolished" (can't imagine anyone will bother but hey ho). No doubt the English legal beagles have learnt from the Scottish experience (which seems to have worked very well) and carefully included the words "all but" (may have some particular relevance in future to the monarch. . Anyone know where to buy a 750W 1 litre electric bouilloire in France? In person not online, merci.

Because leasehold has to do with the ownership of the land a building (and it is not just domestic property) is on being different to that of the structures on it. If leasehold is to be abolshed, how will these landowners be compensated?

I have no argument against dealing with the leasehold abuse of recent years, but short leaseholds as an alternative to renting is used in the commercial and industrial sector and also as an alternative to renting in the , mainly high end, domestic market because a 5-10 year lease reuires less input and management than a rental agreement.

Leased land will also have a value on a company's balance sheet and this will reuire compensation.

It is also taking a sledgehammer to break a tiny nut. The leashold system has worked very well for most people for hundreds of years. It is only the abuse of the system in the last 10-20 years that has caused problems. So deal with the problem and leave that which is working well alone.

The current plans sound like scrapping a good car because a front headlight needs replacing.

I thought the same thing Allira !
A very common expression with small children!
