‘Granted asylum and a right to work’?
That’d be excellent.
What we do have are too many migrants not being assessed, living off the taxpayer, wandering around, ‘getting lost’ in the stystem (verifiable, sadly). More will come and until that happy day when some do contribute they will cost us all a great deal of money.
And who benefits most from new housing stock? Those who have been on lists for years and are (just about) managing? Or new incomers -with nowhere to live.
I’d take a guess.
I agree that it would be excellent. The problem has been that refugees are unable to work, so have nothing do but hang about, and need benefits to support themselves.
If, as has been promised, they can be fast-tracked to acceptance or rejection, and can then become citizens, that might stop some of the complaints about young men on street corners and people being given money, however little that is in reality.
I haven't seen the detail of the plan (I doubt it's out yet, as AB is not in office as PM) but in the usual way of things new applicants will join the lists and be allocated homes depending on points. I'm not sure how the 'just about managing' will be disadvantaged in this case, although I agree that they get a very bad deal on the whole because of means-testing.
