Sympathy for Harry anyone?

Is there anyone left who has any sympathy for H&M after the recent pantomime? I’ve been in the ‘against’ camp since the birth of Archie when they deliberately misled the press and public with delayed announcements and made it clear they were doing things their way. Since then….well. I have a close friend who still thinks the sun shines out of Harry’s backside, he’s had a terrible upbringing and life, he should get an apology….I’m avoiding contact with her this week as I know she’ll have another excuse about him.

It seems that the complainants were badly advised by their lawyers imo, looking at the judges remarks.

I have little doubt of the Mails complicity.

After what the pair did and said, there's no going back. You cannot trust a liar never mind a pair, now it’s emotional blackmail over the children. They are their currency they think. Better they don’t meet. They knew the consequences. They will cause mayhem. Bet they don’t attempt to reconcile with Megans father he is a father who hasn't seen his grandchildren too, forgot he hasn't anything to offer has he?

And yet, all the photos of him ‘in action’ show him with spotlessly clean uniform and as one ex serviceman said his weapons were not in the correct place. I don’t believe he was in the thick of it.*

I have it on apparently good authority that he had two troops of SAS guarding him at all times. Of course he was never in the thick of it...what a coup for the enemy were he killed!

No

None whatsoever. After the grief he caused his dying grandfather and the Queen who was in her final years he deserves all he gets.

I m remembering a photo of lilibet which was said to be a friend s child. And all the stories about whether the bump was real.
Hard to know what to believe.
But I have no sympathy for them after that hurtful interview and the book.
As someone has said Anne was also a spare but has lived her life with dignity and is the hardest working royal. She protected her children from the press but didn’t hide them away and make a big drama out of it.

Actually Anne was never the “Spare”, Andrew was!

Margaret was the Spare, Harry is the Spare. All three Spares are/were troubled and troublesome!

Pretty sure Anne was 2nd in line for 8 years

Anne was the 'spare' for 10 years, I think. Andrew was born in 1960 and she was born in 1950.

LemonJam Wed 08-Jul-26 11:31:53

Princess Anne has always been in line of succession and is currently 18th in line. But she has never been a 'spare".

Anne was born third in line at birth, (Charles and Princess M before her as she was not male) but was moved down further when Andrew and then Edward were born. Rules of male promogeniture applied at the time- updated by Succession to the Crown Act 2013 giving equal rights to both genders.

Anne has never been second in line to the throne- thus never been a spare at any time in the way Harry and Princess Margaret experienced.

Ah, thanks, forgot Princess Margaret!

Thank you LemonJam I didn't know that!

Anne has never been second in line to the throne- thus never been a spare at any time in the way Harry and Princess Margaret experienced.

Margaret was only second in line whilst her father was on the throne and Elizabeth had no children.

When Elizabeth had children they took precedence in line of succession over Margaret. The line of succession was Elizabeth, Charles, Anne whilst King George lived. When Elizabeth came to the throne, at that point Anne became second in line after Charles. Margaret then became third. That position didn’t change until Andrew was born.

So Anne was second in line from February 1952 to February 1960.

I don’t suppose she ever considered she would inherit the throne. Charles was a strong and healthy child and as time as shown she was content to make her own life without anger or envy at her brother.

LemonJam Wed 08-Jul-26 13:07:21

You may well be right Lathyrus, quite possible I misunderstood.

In that case, Anne was 8 when Andrew was born- so unless QE had firmly decided she was never going to have more children, unlikely to have had a keen, real awareness of her position between birth and 8 years old? Andrew was born and the apple of his mother's eye and *always had the awareness as he grew older, up until Charles had William at 33 years old, that he was the "spare" .

Calendargirl Wed 08-Jul-26 13:19:07

Being picky, but Anne was born in August 1950, Andrew in February 1960.

So she was actually 9.5 when her younger brother was born, taking her place as the ‘spare’.

Thats great - my memory didn't serve me accurately- Im always happy to be corrected on royal facts- I'm not an expert!

Back to Harry and the other litigants …

“The Duke of Sussex and his fellow claimants tried to settle their failed £50m privacy claim against the publisher of the Daily Mail weeks before the trial began”

Elton John, Doreen Lawrence, Hugh Grant.

Now they have a £50million bill to settle between them.

The DM refused to settle when approached by intermediaries 11 weeks before trial. The DM wanted to clear irs name.

Well done the Free Press I say!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 09-Jul-26 08:55:17

“ Michael Gillard, a veteran journalist who closely followed the trial, claimed in his blog that the claimants had been desperately trying to avoid the costly trial last December.

They turned to James Hanning, a former journalist and deputy editor of The Independent on Sunday, in the hope to open settlement talks.

Mr Hanning confirmed that he had been instructed, with the knowledge of the claimants and their legal team, to contact Stephen Wright, a former associate editor of the Daily Mail. He did so via a former senior detective known to them both.

“I acted as a backchannel,” Mr Hanning told Gillard, explaining that it had been felt that a “sideways” approach to a settlement could prove successful.

The offer was a suggestion to “talk sensibly”, he said, adding: “Any specific headings that were mentioned would have been ‘for discussion’. There was no suggestion of there being a ‘take it or leave it’ offer from the claimants.

“I was not in a position to judge how good/bad the offer to talk was likely to be, but I do believe it was put forward as a sincere way of reaching an agreement.”

Discussions were said to have become “particularly heated” on Christmas Eve, but Associated, with its reputation on the line, refused to back down.

A second informal attempt to settle also failed, which was said to have been made using a former News of The World journalist who had worked alongside Graham Johnson, a convicted phone hacker and member of the claimants’ legal research team.

Having lost the case, the seven claimants are jointly liable for any costs issued against them. They had been warned about the potential financial “consequences” as the legal costs mounted.”

Well done that Judge for forensically dismantling the wild claims of phone hacking and even burglary. Restored my faith in the judiciary anyway!

Slightly off tack but Doreen Lawrence’s ex husband has given an interview following the judgment of the case. He paints an interesting picture of the saintly Ms Lawrence. Quite an eye opener. Seems like she thought the Mail would pay up and slink away. Not so and good for them.
Now they’re all faced with a large bill for bringing this case. Serves them all right.

Yes I have every sympathy with Harry. By his own admission he has suffered with mental health issues. Probably didn't think things through releasing his book and interviews during health problems with Philip and the Queen. He'd tried to make ammends and rekindle his relationships with his family only to be offered a room at Buckingham Palace and then the offer was withdrawn! I don't think William will ever forgive him for telling the public that he insulted Megan, and when Harry defended her he physically attacked him. Great person to have as a future King - a thug.

TheHappyGardener Thu 09-Jul-26 13:56:02

Whinge & Ginge? I sincerely wish they had followed through with their declaration to live their life away from public scrutiny, but sadly their intent seems to be the exact opposite! I think the RF have shown them the disdain they deserve and I applaud them for doing so!

Babamaman Thu 09-Jul-26 13:59:04

I think your friend has a screw loose! Words fail me!

sankev Thu 09-Jul-26 14:07:46

I have no time for either of them. That being said it seems a tad mean to not allow him to stay in one of the royal homes because he didn’t accept the invitation in time. But honestly, everyone would be so apprehensive around them so they don’t become a chapter in another money making book! I felt some sympathy at the beginning until they made their money by completely trashing both families!

Yes I do feel quite sorry for him I think he’s grown up in an unenviable position, It’s well documented that the ‘Spare’ always has a difficult time and often doesn’t perform as expected (look no further than Margaret)
I think there has been a lot of nastiness in the right wing press picking up on every single thing down to practically the way he breathes This has got more marked with marrying Meghan and having the children. You only have to look at remarks on here
I think Charles and the rather saintly William have joined forces so he feels even less welcome and more pushed out
I don t think I d even bother coming over if it was me

I agree, he lost his mother at a vulnerable age and has to see his father with the woman he feels caused his mother's upset. I see a lot of the media bullying them, it's excessive I don't understand it, he seems a nice guy.

MarieElla Thu 09-Jul-26 14:19:24

I feel a tiny bit sorry for him because his (and Meghan's) humiliation is so public but they caused it all themselves.

sazz1 Thu 09-Jul-26 14:19:56

Babbamaman
That's a very derogatory term for someone with mental health issues. I expect you're one of those people who puts Be Kind all over FB to look good but this is really what you're like when anonymous.

Smileless2012 Thu 09-Jul-26 14:31:50

How and when did H try to make amends with his family sazzl? The offer of a room at Buck. Palace was withdrawn because he didn't let them know if was accepting the offer.

With so many lies in the book, do you really believe his account of being physically attacked? I think William would have far more than the broadcasting of him insulting Meghan to forgive his brother for; telling the world about William's circumcision, accusing the RF of being racist and M & H's attempted character assassination of Catherine, not to mention the pain and distress to their GM.
