It seems she was found in her home with serious injuries.

I did not share her political beliefs, especially in recent years, but she was a courageous woman prepared to stand up for what she believed in and plough her own furrow.

Obviously the police will investigate and we will gradually learn what happened.

I will mourn her death. We need more women in politics who are prepared to stand by their beliefs whether it makes them popular or not.

Some people are cheering. What a horrible country we have become.

Shame on them.
Whether or not people agreed with her political stance, for her to have met her end in such an horrific way is deplorable. The poor lady must have been terrified, and I hope the perpetrator is justly punished for his actions.

How awful what a wicked and dangerous world we live in.

As awful as her death is, it’s important to remember that homicide figures are actually decreasing. Each one is truly dreadful of course but as far as homicide is concerned, the UK is less dangerous and wicked than it has been

You may well be right regarding the decreasing homicide figures. However, that is of little comfort to the families of those who are murdered.

Ziplock - of course if someone you love is murdered, it’s irrelevant how many other people suffer the same fate, but for the rest of us, it’s important to keep a sense of proportion based on facts.

A tragic way for a life to end so cruel and heartless. Ann Widdecombe was a rare individual who spoke her mind and justified what she said. Like her views or not she was honest a rarity amongst politicians.

That poor soul. How frightened she must have been. When you reach her (our) age, you have lost any real ability to either flight or fight, however hard you try.

What a cowardly, unspeakable act.

Now the man who was held for questioning has been released, no longer a suspect in the investigation. Back to square one, an attemped burglary or possibly another motive? A horrible crime whatever the reason.

I read over on MN, some ghastly transactivist they call themselves, Heather Herbert, crowing over Ann's muder on X saying they hope it was a painful death. Such people are truly appalling, they show themselves in their true colours. An element within that movement who wonder why women per se find them so objectionable.

MPs will be back to feeling fearful for their safety.
Until at least this is sorted.

This is terrible. Apparently she was expected to appear on a TV show but didn’t turn up and her gardener found her in her kitchen. She The person who was arrested has now been released which means the police are still searching for the murderer.

I don’t think MPs are ‘back to feeling fearful for their safety’ . The safety of our MPs ( regardless of what NF lies ) is taken very seriously. There is a whole system in place, rightly so, of which obviously we don’t know the details.

Except Farage doesnt hold constituency surgeries face to face.
The rest of the MPs do?

Of course it may not be anything to do with her being a former MP, or Reform, or being forthright in her views.

Very sad to hear about Anne Widdicombe. I didn’t always support her politics, but she seemed to be, otherwise, a good sport, feisty, kind and generous. A friend of mine met her and found her to be extremely pleasant. Such a cruel end and a cowardly, wicked act towards a vulnerable, elderly woman who was looking forward to a quiet retirement. Probably she would have fought, but she must have been terrorized. It doesn’t bear thinking about.

I don’t think they are back to feeling fearful for their safety either ….as I bet it’s never gone away in the first place. As an MP, getting daily hate mail must be awful, and they aren’t all from cranks who never follow up on their words.

Counter Terrorism unit now involved.

I cant see Farage holding constituency surgeries anytime soon.

Counter terrorism have found some evidence linking the man arrested in Yorkshire to terrorism. I guess they stripped his phone and computer apart and maybe found something there. Devon police called incompetent. Why would someone travel nigh on 300 miles with a possible blunt weapon to kill someone they had never met? How would they find their way to a remote part of Dartmoor? ( I was in that part of the world 3 weeks ago and it’s a myriad of narrow lanes, some with grass growing up the middle) How did they get a post code? But above all Why?
