Palestinians to Burnham:
Do no harm.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, in his tongue-in-cheek apology for Labour’s position on Palestine, stated that his party under Keir Starmer ‘didn’t get it right’ and needs to ‘do better.’ This must be the mother of all British understatements.
Britain under Labour, just as under the Conservatives, has been complicit in arming, justifying, and whitewashing apartheid Israel’s genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, its intensified ethnic cleansing of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and its ongoing Nakba against the entire Palestinian people. This is on top of the UK’s unique responsibility for the establishment of Israel in 1948 as a settler-colony through the planned destruction of the Palestinian homeland and the ethnic cleansing of most of the Indigenous Palestinians.
A UN Commission of Inquiry has recently confirmed that Israel is committing an ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. This is in harmony with the near consensus of human rights organizations, United Nations human rights experts, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars.
Describing Israel’s genocide, Orly Noy, the chair of Israel’s leading human rights organization B’Tselem, recently wrote, ‘Israel is unleashing a holocaust in Gaza, and it cannot be dismissed as the will of the country’s current fascist leaders alone.. . . . What we are witnessing is the final stage in the nazification of Israeli society.’ The UK could and should ‘do better’ than being complicit in all that.
