Am I just being impatient and mean? New PM

I feel, even though I’m a LP supporter, quite irritated already with Andy Burnham.

Quite honestly, even for the poorest, £45 (on average) reduction in an entire year (offset by cap rises plus the fact that this isn’t necessarily going to last for an entire year) and re-capping bus fares at £2 per journey, is this really what people want and does it truly make a “cost of living” difference.

Why, oh why, couldn’t he have simply increased the tax threshold and benefitted all low paid workers and pensioners?

We all know personal income tax will need to rise. Why not bite the bullet and just raise the threshold, then tax income tax at a higher rate?

I know he’s said he’ll look again at tax thresholds later, but it was said in such a way that I feel it simply won’t be unfrozen.

He faces all the same problems as Starmer, yet the two years work Starmer has done to try and stabilise things like the economy will simply become part of Burham’s legacy.

Maybe I need an early night and a nice glass of something? 🍷🥃🍸🍹

Jesus he's been in the job 4 days, what exactly do you expect him to do? You are aware that things can't be changed over night surely?

Desire Thu 23-Jul-26 14:02:20

Hi should increase all tax thresholds and give people breathing space. These daily announcements he is doing now are just for publicity and I would have preferred him taking his time to understand the full picture before making any changes. These look like desperate measures to please the people. The funding for thresholds should come from cutting the welfare benefits which are way too high.

I'm still bereaved for Keir Starmer and I believe AB stabbed him the back for his own gain as a first priority not the gain of the . I can't look at the man and as for these little dribbles - well!

I feel as if he is conducting a huge marketing exercise; daily announcements, little funny videos on social media. Maybe it’s what people want and vote for but I was happy with Starmers slowly slowly approach with no false promises. But, as I’ve said before, I must try to not let my dislike of him cloud my judgement. Although my own very hard working, talented MP was never going to get anything in the reshuffle the MP in the next constituency who was a Starmer supporter but, unlike mine was one that then supported Burnham’s leadership has still lost the job she had. The cull of anyone even remotely pro Starmer is decimating government of up and coming talent on the front benches. Mind you, Labour have got pretty impressive back benches.

Anyone heard Brian Eno multi millionaire on TV this lunchtime arguing for a 2% tax on the unearned income ( ie income from assets not the daily grind) of the very wealthy like him?

He was speaking as the front man for an organisation made up of the richest people in our society who are in favour of paying out what they can well afford to benefit the many in order to achieve a better Britain...Good for him. And maybe for us if AB/Healey can enable it...

Great, thank you, maybe he will "egg more on" as in conscience and social responsibility.

(Would be nice if the press started encouraging it, wouldn't it? Except the owners of many papers are amongst the super rich.)

I'd not heard of Brian Eno but I like his thinking. The frozen personal allowances have hit everyone, but the poor suffer most as they have few luxuries to cut back on. Unfreezing the lowest band would really halp those who pay relatively low amounts of tax and adding a premium to the highest rates could cover the cost at the expense of those most able to afford it.
Sadly there is no easy answer to our economic woes, many of which are the result of the costs of international conflicts and hence the need to increase defence spending. I don't envy the government having to struggle with these matters but I'm glad that Andy Burnham seems to have his priorities right even if the measures so far will seem like a drop in the ocean for those of us really struggling. Lets give him a chance and hope his new chancellor can come up with some solutions in the autumn.

2 days !!! Good grief

This is kind of nice but not life-chsnging.
What will AB do about social care for the elderly? It seems so unfair that Parkinson's disease is covered by the NHS but Alzheimer's disease is not.
This is going to be unpopular, but I think better-off pensioners should continue to pay NI. We're the ones using the NHS resources, what with our presriptions, cataracts, hearing aids and stents, not to mention hip and knee replacements, COPD and serious illness.
If you don't have to go into care, you should feel very lucky and be prepared to finance those who do.

Gary Lineker is saying the same thing but doesn’t get a mention because so many people dislike him…(Brian Eno was in Roxy Music I believe..then became a very successful music producer).

Hmm ....... Metoo
At the moment he looks like a man out of his depth.
KingoftheNorth has to be allowed his first budget and we need to see his 10 year plan.
Watch this space.

Cath9 Thu 23-Jul-26 16:56:14

As long as he doesn’t become another Michel Foot who you may remember was also just a leader of the Labour Party, very left wing and was known for wearing such shaggy clothes.

So far: some bus fares capped to £2 instead of £3 for the whole of 2027.

Reduction of VAT on household electricity from 5% to zero for 6 months from October. This includes the electricity charges for all those fortunate enough to afford an EV who have a charger at home.
Public site charging costs will remain at 20%.
70%-80% of homes in the north use gas for their main heating source, but so far, no reduction on VAT for that.

Geordiegirl1 Thu 23-Jul-26 17:10:32

Yes, but this is how it starts, little niggles and denigrations and a quick post to gransnet - for what? . Sheesh!

Aveline Thu 23-Jul-26 17:11:52

He's produced a palpable feel good factor. Obviously is aware of how the nation groaned when the first thing Keir did was remove the winter fuel allowance. He's off to a positive start.
I'm pleased that he's got Scotsman Sarwar right at the heart of Westminster govt. A poke in the eye to Scottish govt.

Maybe he should … he’s been plotting this for 10 years.

I’m opening another bottle of wine Cossy & ‘NotSpaghetti’ 🍷

I am liking things so far.
Not sure what people would make of that as I am a floating voter.

Usedtobeblonde Thu 23-Jul-26 17:44:01

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, let’s give him a few months and then judge.

Don’t drink wine but can I have a cup of tea with you all please?

Sunshinegirls Thu 23-Jul-26 18:10:30

Why don't the so called Patriotic Millionaires get together and do something good for the country ie help the homeless etc etc or some other worthy cause they could get behind or just send some money to the tax man if they are that keen on paying more tax instead of all this virtue signalling.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 23-Jul-26 18:12:06

The group of millionaires are asking the government to tax them in their wealth over £10 million.

They aren’t ’so called’, they are part of a formal organisation of millionaires in the UK who lobby for a fairer society:

‘Patriotic Millionaires UK, exists to change the current economic system which is failing us all. We believe extreme wealth must contribute more so working people and those on low incomes aren’t endlessly picking up the pieces of a broken economy.’

It seems strange for people to object to their aims to me.

Sunshinegirls Thu 23-Jul-26 18:20:32

What have they actually done?
