I feel, even though I’m a LP supporter, quite irritated already with Andy Burnham.

Quite honestly, even for the poorest, £45 (on average) reduction in an entire year (offset by cap rises plus the fact that this isn’t necessarily going to last for an entire year) and re-capping bus fares at £2 per journey, is this really what people want and does it truly make a “cost of living” difference.

Why, oh why, couldn’t he have simply increased the tax threshold and benefitted all low paid workers and pensioners?

We all know personal income tax will need to rise. Why not bite the bullet and just raise the threshold, then tax income tax at a higher rate?

I know he’s said he’ll look again at tax thresholds later, but it was said in such a way that I feel it simply won’t be unfrozen.

He faces all the same problems as Starmer, yet the two years work Starmer has done to try and stabilise things like the economy will simply become part of Burham’s legacy.

Maybe I need an early night and a nice glass of something? 🍷🥃🍸🍹

“The government launched Skills England in July to identify skills needs. This new body for the skills system had its first report yesterday (Tuesday 24th September), which highlighted the need for change.

The report provides an initial assessment of the nation’s working skills, along with the future skills needs and gaps employers are currently struggling with across the country. In this report, it found that employer investment in training has been declining steadily over the past decade, with training expenditure currently at its lowest level since records began in 2011, with investment per employee decreasing by 19% in real terms.

It also shows that almost 1 in 10, or 2.5 million roles, are in critical demand in the UK. More than 90% of these are in roles that require training or education.

Going forward, Skills England will play a crucial role in determining the which types of training will be eligible for the expanded growth and skills levy and will shortly set out how they will work with stakeholders to inform their advice to the Department for Education.

The need for jobs and skills varies across different industries. The health and social care sector experience the highest demand, followed by education, manufacturing, then science and technology”.
The government are already doing this.

Casdon

I expect they will get over it MayBee70m if he delivers and Labour rise higher in the polls. Call me a cynic.

I agree- let's see if he delivers and the LP continues to lead in the polls- it would be good for the country if he does.

Even if they lost, which is neither here nor there to me, at least we would have known what he was thinking if there had been a contest.

If it was so obvious that he wolud win, there was no good reason to not offer an alternative.
I, and some others would have accepted him better after a vote.

LemonJam you can repeat yourself as much as you like, but there was unfortunately, NO contest.

I’ve just listened to a recent TRIP and they seem very enthusiastic and hopeful about Burnham. Mentioning a book that he’d written setting out his plans for the country. Even so, as I keep saying, a lot of it was already being done. And the difficult part was to get elected, the hard work of which, which included uniting the party, was done over several years by Keir Starmer. It isn’t easy as a Labour Party leader to get the party elected ( I mean Corbyn was up against a weak Theresa May and the bumbling disheveled Johnson and still couldn’t win). If only Burnham was a politician that could have played a part in government with his communication skills and enthusiasm, but imo he was only interested in doing it as party leader, not as a team player and Keir was obviously aware of that ( and I’ve been watching it happen for two years). For the good of the country I have to hope that he will succeed but, if he does it’s because of the hard work that Starmer put in to getting Labour back in power and that’s the bit that I will always struggle with.

In my opinion Corbyn lost the election because of Brexit.
Had he been pro-Europe we would have had a different outcome.

LemonJam with reference to your post yesterday 18.22:

If you read my earlier post, I didn’t say Farage’s ridiculous resignation had any link to the timing of the coup.

I said that, IMO, the coup was timed to align with Farage’s declining popularity due to the £5 million gift:

13th May 2026 - Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards officially opens investigation into NF’s £5 million ‘gift’.

14th May 2026 – Josh Simons publicly announced his decision to resign as MP for Makerfield.

I don’t need to outline the rest.

Louise Haigh herself has said the planning to get Burnham into power had been going on for a year - perhaps just waiting for the perfect ‘opportunity’ to start the ball rolling, or coincidence?

It’s not difficult to join the dots.

I won’t do any more ‘huffing and puffing’ on the matter.

Lizziedrip- I posted this at 18.22 yesterday not quoting any of your posts directly. I have no idea which of your earlier posts you refer to "If you read my earlier post". I stand by my own post:

"Farage announced his ridiculous resignation on 7th July- way after Starmer announced his resignation on 22 June and just a couple of days before AB was elected as LP leader on 9 July.

Nothing effective in Farage's announcement timing that I can see apart from temporarily suspending his investigation during parliamentary summer recess. But his antics and his competition with his co contender Count Binface is definitely giving many people a laugh home and abroad 😅

LemonJam my post yesterday of 16:30.

Please can you indicate where I have linked Farage’s resignation as MP for Clacton and the timing of the AB coup?

You seem insistent that I’ve made this link🤷‍♀️

LemonJam Wed 29-Jul-26 10:41:27

I did not respond to your 16.30 post yesterday Lizziedrip and neither do I feel the need to respond to it today either 🤷‍♀️
