I got to thinking. How would someone, or an organisation, arrange for 40,000 or whatever the number was, mainly fit[they swam a distance], mainly young men, to all go at the same time.

Through social media I guess 🤷‍♀️

Yes. But why not more younger people? Aunts? Middle age women etc.

Because they swum:
few middle aged women or much younger people could do the distance and not drown never ind the possibly very long bit before hanging out in tents and so on.

I haven’t read the whole thread but has somebody made the point that they didn’t swim to mainland Spain but a Spanish enclave (?) in N Africa adjoining Morocco?

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Aug-26 16:01:11

Exactly.

If a chunk of Normandy were British, and people were departing from there.....

We could (in theory) take them back to Britain....

The Spanish Army don’t mess around. They did a great job getting rid of the majority of migrants who flocked into the enclave.
There’s a lesson in there for Andy Burnham and co.

Franco thought the army did a great job too and they certainly didn’t mess about. We should all be careful what we wish for so far as our armed forces are concerned.

It's totally beyond me this sort of comment.

Maybe, just maybe one day you or your family will be in a bad situation. I hope not.

There's more to this than meets the eye. How do people feel so confident writing off tens of thousands of others?

MawsRosie, I did. (But was ignored)

In the early stages of the Spanish Civil War, Franco drew heavily on Moroccan troops. There were 80,000 of them deployed by him during the course of the war.
They were known for their extreme violence.

Ceuta has special status under the Schengen rules. Entry into the enclave does not confer a right to enter mainline Spain.

What the motive for this was is yet to be explained and conspiracy theories abound. It sounds like predominantly young men were used to make some political point. Probably engineered through TikTok or Instagram just as flash mobs are in the UK.

These people didn’t behave like migrants. The vast majority have returned to Morocco.

Of course, the right wing media and Reform leapt on it as it suits their constant scaremongering narrative. Someone really needs to confiscate their phones.

Yes they acted quickly, nobody was hurt but they were escorted off the premises as it were, over the border again.
I think from what a couple of the young men said it was meant to be fun, but didn’t turn out to be as fun as they hoped. They’ll probably put selfies on tiktok the minute they’re home again.

These people weren’t in a bad situation.

I don't care whether they just swam round to the next bay, or what their motive was. My point is that within that huge number, including young children, there were bound to be casualties. They were foolish and stupid.
The Alboran Sea can be dangerous due to strong currents from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean mixing together. Idiots.

Why do they need to confiscate their phones? Thanks to X and Youtube and people filming on their phones and posting on these sites we can see what's really happening in the world today and come to our own conclusions. Governments have tried to hoodwink us in the past with false narratives about immigration etc but we can see with our own eyes thanks to social media what's really happening.

fancythat Sat 01-Aug-26 18:17:11

That is why I was glad that X got invented.

Sunshinegirls Sat 01-Aug-26 18:21:09

I saw a post on Youtube that said 'Don't worry what you look like in photos worry what you look like in Xrays' how true.

Sunshinegirls Sat 01-Aug-26 18:22:22

Ooops posted on wrong thread.

Graphite Sat 01-Aug-26 18:27:23

Read my post. I meant Reform who posted misleading messages about the event because they love anything like this.

Do people posting on social media really understand what is happening? Do they understand the long and complex history of Morocco and the Spanish territories? I seriously doubt it.

Sunshinegirls Sat 01-Aug-26 18:34:27

Spain has deployed its Army to directly repel the invasion.

They are using pepper spray.

They are not messing around.

What happened to the ECHR - to which Spain is a signatory?

Even Spain’s far left government is using troops to defend its border using force.

The very thing Tory and Labour governments have told us is impossible.(copied from X Zia Yusuf Reform Party)

fancythat Sat 01-Aug-26 18:38:26

Have the tories and Labour and some of their supporters, fed us a load of lies?

Whether they understand or not they are filming what's happening on the ground it's upto individuals to make their own minds up. You can see live coverage of what's happening. Lots of bad things on social media but people filming live events as they happen is good I think.

Galaxy Sat 01-Aug-26 20:01:37

I am absolutely delighted about the existence of X.

Aveline Sat 01-Aug-26 20:37:16

I agree. Means we can see for ourselves what's going on rather than wait for an edited version.

Casdon Sat 01-Aug-26 20:48:03

I read X with a massive pinch of salt, it’s accurate only perhaps 50% of the time, but sometimes there are scoops before the official news.
