I’d disagree regarding Georgia Meloni TerriBull

‘Giorgia Meloni is widely classified as a far-right politician. She leads the national-conservative party Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia), which has neo-fascist roots and advocates for strict immigration policies, traditional family values, and national sovereignty.

While her political roots lie in post-fascist movements, analysts describe her governance since taking office in 2022 as a blend of right-wing populism and more pragmatic conservatism, particularly in her strong support for the EU, NATO, and Ukraine.’
Times

The style of government in Italy is probably not as far right as Meloni personally would like however, given there is a three party coalition, it reflects the compromise on policies that they can all agree on.

Oh it’s the common answer to everything nowadays, whatever happens or doesn’t happen is the fault of the shadowy far right.
The opposite of the reds under the beds of yesteryear.

The 'far right' is far from 'shadowy'. We can see it in its full glory in the US. Hungary has just escaped its clutches... It has adherents in most European countries and undoubtably further afield.

Our parents and grandparents seem to have managed to recognise it for what it is. It's quite strange that their offspring want to shut their eyes to it...

It’s shadowy on here in the minds of many it usurps everything.
Nobody is ‘shutting their eyes to it’ but to constantly bring it into every discussion from migrants doing a mass flash mob excursion into a EU country to which foods do you prefer kind of thread is silly and boring.

People laughed at the ‘reds under the bed’ stuff years ago and will equally laugh in the future about the fearful gasping about the Far Right in the UK.

Mamie Sun 02-Aug-26 11:42:46

The BBC website reports that the message "Spain is Open" appeared online and thousands of Moroccans swam or scrambled to Ceuta. Once there, they found they had no right to go to mainland Spain, so went home again. It is an interesting report looking at the possible authors of the scam.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Strict immigration, tradional family values and national sovereignty, now means far right to people??

We can certainly laugh at the ridiculous "liberal woke" epithet, which nobody who uses it seems able to define.

Ah.

I had been wondering what made them go en masse.
[apart from the obvious, 500,000 previous people got officially recognised].

Certainly not in real life; do you know anyone who talks about the far right?
Plenty of it online though.

nanna8 Sun 02-Aug-26 12:31:26

No one I know here talks about far right - they do online, though. Especially the British. Just saying. I think it is meant as an insult or a way of shutting people up. Not sure. I just think it is rude and so is the lovey leftie description. Equally bad.

I would urge people to listen to Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo’s level-headed interview with Times Radio yesterday.

I see he’s invited Zia Yusuf for a little chat about his stunt for GBNews.

Georgia Meloni, Far Right depending on one's definition, is not the only politician who fears the consequences of unfettered immigration. Weirdly, so does Denmark's, centre left premier, Mette Frederikesen, who has pursued a tough line and she has called on the EU over these latest crisis to "evaluate all options" including the possibility of suspending Schengen. A proposal echoed by Mari Rantanen, Finland's Interior Minister, Friedrick Mertz, the German Chancellor, told, Spain "it must regain control of the territory" Meanwhile Donald Tusk has taken special measures to strengthen his own country's borders with Belarus, who is not a member of the EU. Particularly as Poland has recorded as many as 370 first time asylum applications in 2026! Of course Poland has accommodated many Ukrainians, although culturally, they're not that different, a bit like Irish settling in England. Poland's vulnerability lies in their proximity to Russia. He, Tusk has advised that Poland has invested billions of euros and engaged thousands of soldiers, police officers and border guards and advises "Spain must follow our example if Schengen is to survive"

GrannyGravy13 Sun 02-Aug-26 12:43:53

The BBC News was reporting that the EU is having an emergency meeting this week to discuss Ceuta, and firming up EU borders.

Well worth a listen. And further evidence of the poor level of reporting so widespread in our media. Is it deliberate or are journalists, reporters and presenters just lazy?

Oreo Sun 02-Aug-26 12:54:29

It’s time Schengen was quietly put to one side.Things have changed massively since then.

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Aug-26 13:01:18

I don't know. I am an open lefty to others, and no doubt would be labelled woke except that definition is far to worn out to be of any real use.

But inside we are just ourselves with a variety of views that transcend labels: however in political discussions one has to put people in groupings or definitions. It is getting more oppositional and direct: there is a "Far right" and I don't think politicians in that category would deny that they are.

I think its probable that people who don't know the Left well generalise far too much and assume POV that are not actually there: witness the GN descriptions of someone or politician as "communist" when they havent a clue what it really really means. (But this hasn't happened lately)

Almost certainly people in the Conservative Party have a wide range of view when it comes down to it, we've witnessed its changes just as there have been on the left: But Reform and Restore have a set off clear cut views on certain issues that allow a label. Just as calling people "soft left" probably is a reasonable useful category. (As opposed to hard left as in SWP).

Oreo Sun 02-Aug-26 13:08:09

There is a far left and a far right but people in the UK have so far seen them off ( Corbyn and friends) and hopefully always will do.
It’s possible but very improbable that Reform will ever be able to form a government and even less likely now that we have Andy Burnham as PM.
Seeing Far Right everywhere is worry for the sake of it.

Are other countries actively attempting to interfere in the politics of Australia nanna8? The evidence of that happening in the UK, and in Europe is mounting, which is why there is so much discussion here, not just online but in the news frequently too? I don’t buy into Gransnetters calling each other far right, but there is a threat to our democracy here, which is hard for people to acknowledge.

Oreo Sun 02-Aug-26 13:33:35

They may well be attempting to Casdon but are very unlikely to succeed.

Casdon Sun 02-Aug-26 13:43:22

Thanks to recent media attention Oreo, complicity has been a big elephant in the room until recent revelations.

sazz1 Sun 02-Aug-26 14:25:35

Is the left really left though? Or just pretending to be?
I'm reading about many people in one area, many of whom marched previously in defense of immigrants and welcomed them. Then the 'boat people' started being put into accommodation in their area. Mass protests against it from the formerly welcoming population followed. Same in one village where asylum seekers were being transferred to an ex army barracks. There many villagers were going to leave the UK! It's definitely a 'not in my back yard' but welcome somewhere else.
Spain is deporting most of the Moroccans now and many have left voluntarily. They have an inflatable barrier installed across the coastline to stop boats, jet skies etc. IMO we should have the same, and do the same
If you're defending the illegal immigrants think if you would really welcome them en mass in your street or nearby area.

I've seen Sky News programmes and articles about nationwide Australia protests on immigration with clashes between far right and far left protestors. Plus the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, equivalent to UK MI5, is flagging regular warnings about nationalist and racist violent extremism as a major security concern and is focussing on the growing visibility of far right nationalist groups and influence of populist parties in Australia over concern for housing, immigration and social cohesion.

Neo-Nazi and extremist groups in Australia like the Nation Socialist Network have drawn heavy media and public condemnation. And Australia's One Nation party is getting significant media coverage.

Just recently our media reported that Pauline Hanson, the Australian One Nation leader, met far right activist Tommy Robinson when she was an an EU tour and she was accused of talking Australia down and associating with extremist figures.

I appreciate no one you know nanna8 talks about the far right in Australia, but have Sky News, UK media and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation got their facts wrong?

fancythat Sun 02-Aug-26 15:07:51

I dont understand why we cannot.
Not that that might be the best way to do things.

Is it because the Moroccans are not from an unsafe Country?
