Mainly from Morocco and Algeria.

^They have an inflatable barrier installed across the coastline to stop boats, jet skies etc. IMO we should have the same, and do the same^

I dont understand why we cannot.
Not that that might be the best way to do things.

Is it because the Moroccans are not from an unsafe Country?

The situation in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Channel are very very different. We really could not install an inflatable barrier.

I understand that. But is the principle a do-able one?

Not as I understand it - apart from the legal situation, the two bodies of water experience different weather and have different depths, widths , shipping etc

It is the legal situation I have been wondering about.

Oreo

People laughed at the ‘reds under the bed’ stuff years ago and will equally laugh in the future about the fearful gasping about the Far Right in the UK.

I think your analogy is completely out.

It isn't fascists who are today's reds under the beds, it is immigrants.

No-one on here is starting multiple threads about 'the far right' (fascists). But immigrants pop up with great frequency. The fascist trope of 'othering' a discrete section of humanity is working beautifully...

Shel1951 Sun 02-Aug-26 15:56:49

Well then it won't be a problem

I think there’s an interaction between the legal position and the weather/tidal/shipping conditions in the Channel. The latter I understand underpins the legal position because it would be a danger to life- and not just the lives of the migrants. In other words a barrier would be a danger and therefore illegal under Maritme law.

I've heard water cannons are a good deterrent against pirates. Just position a few vessels offshore to shoot out strong jets of water.

State sponsored murder. I don’t think it’s a joking matter - but maybe you’re serious?

MartavTaurus Sun 02-Aug-26 16:47:01

Why murder? They're not lethal, you know.
They're used in commercial shipping to deter other boats approaching. DS2 was a master yachtnaster, and they have them on posh yachts. I jest not.

Tuliptree Sun 02-Aug-26 16:49:37

People could drown falling into the sea

Tuliptree Sun 02-Aug-26 16:50:17

Dinghies are not posh yachts

Eh?
The posh yachts themselves do the spraying of the smaller vessels like dinghes that approach them to steal stuff.

Casdon Sun 02-Aug-26 16:55:50

Using water canons would be an effective way to stop people getting on dinghies in France, but once they are onboard and on the sea it would endanger life. The dinghies don’t have fuel to return to France, so if they were prevented from landing in the UK they could only drift.

Thank you Casdon.

Sorry - misread your post. But still not right to use on migrant boats - no idea of the law as applied to posh yachts but they’re irrelevant in this context anyway.

MartavTaurus Sun 02-Aug-26 17:14:02

That's OK.

It's a concept - using water cannons. I've probably spent too long in France, but I know the CRS, the security services there, are allowed to use water cannons on migrants. So it's not irrelevant.

MartavTaurus Sun 02-Aug-26 17:19:35

Oh, and since people have been wondering about the knock on effect of Ceuta, French tv is reporting that France has increased police security fivefold along its borders with Spain.
Not a great time to send personnel elsewhere when they are needed to fight the awful fires raging.

Is the left really left though? Or just pretending to be?
I'm reading about many people in one area, many of whom marched previously in defense of immigrants and welcomed them. Then the 'boat people' started being put into accommodation in their area. Mass protests against it from the formerly welcoming population followed. Same in one village where asylum seekers were being transferred to an ex army barracks. There many villagers were going to leave the UK! It's definitely a 'not in my back yard' but welcome somewhere else.
Spain is deporting most of the Moroccans now and many have left voluntarily. They have an inflatable barrier installed across the coastline to stop boats, jet skies etc. IMO we should have the same, and do the same
If you're defending the illegal immigrants think if you would really welcome them en mass in your street or nearby area.

Inflatable barriers - great idea. 👏

Pretty sure all the people on the left who say they welcome in all illegal immigrants have a front door on their home.

Front doors are there to keep people out who are not invited into your home. People who could harm you or your family and have no right to enter.

In this glorious hot weather maybe they could leave their front doors wide open and really be welcoming. 😉

Casdon Sun 02-Aug-26 17:46:21

The inflatable sea barrier to reduce people entering Ceuta is 500m long. The coastline of Southern England is over 400 miles long. Even if a barrier was employed the people onboard dinghies would require rescuing as the dinghies don’t have fuel to return to France, so lives would be at risk. A sea barrier is not a viable option here.

Sunshinegirls Sun 02-Aug-26 18:09:34

Since Andy Burnham became PM 2,000 have crossed the channel in not small boats but mega dinghies, 160 migrants in one.

I have an idea perhaps (tongue in cheek) Border Control could actually do the job their name tag suggests and protect our border and perhaps not go and pick them up but heyho pigs might fly before that happens.

I thought we'd got over this silly notion of posters knowing exactly what other posters are thinking, or even what they are like as human beings!

Tuliptree Sun 02-Aug-26 18:37:37

Whatever made you think that MT? I would say the evidence for that remark is pretty thin on the ground 😂

I'm quite sure she is. Many here revelling in the abuse of human beings.

I’m pretty sure nobody on this thread is revelling in the abuse of human beings…. What a crass and ridiculous thing to say.
