Interesting.
And the children starting school here.

I don't know why so many people are so spiteful about them, I can understand William and Catherine being upset and anyone in the royal family who felt disrespected by them, but they've done us no harm and nothing about the situation is threatening a constitutional crisis. I also don't see why Meghan is bearing the brunt of blame. It's Harry who has made most of the negative statements that have hurt his family. People often emigrate and return - it happens. They have a right to do so.

I do wonder if they are testing the water as to their reception here, If so, the water is boiling hot and to be avoided.
I think it is down to their children being overlooked by other Royal children. They want the same for their two, for whom they accepted the titles Prince and Princess, as the Wales's children.

Casdon Sun 23-Aug-26 15:23:58

They know the lack of remit their children will have already though, surely? None of the King’s nieces and nephews have official Royal roles, and William and Kate have three children, so their children will have the option if they want to take them up, there is no room for Harry’s children to do so.

I agree with you. You see time and again that people blame the partner of the person they are related to or know of, rather than the person themselves. I never understand that, Harry is responsible for his own actions, nobody else.

Is Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey OK?

I don't think colour came into it.

But I would say that as a white person, probably.
... I may be blind but I honestly didn't even notice - and it was irrelevant to me anyway.

I wasn't actually aware that she had any colour until she made an issue of thinking that people were discriminating against her for it. She just looked like a pretty girl who had lived in the sunshine in California to me.

Chestnut best not tell people what to say on these boards. That's for the Gransnet mods to do.

merlotgran 😅

Is "Christ on a bike' ok?

No, we are still ( by the skin of our teeth) a Christian country so no it's not OK.

Aveline Sun 23-Aug-26 17:06:12

I agree Elegran. It never occurred to me that she might be black, white or any particular colour. I just thought she was American (which is bad enough!!)

We are supposed to be a diverse and inclusive country.
So, please respect all religions and those of us with no faith.

fancythat Sun 23-Aug-26 17:15:22

I am not aware of any religion that finds swearing acceptable.
Nor GN?

Pretty sure this Site does not allow it.
Saying so that you dont get deleted by GN in future.

MarieElla Sun 23-Aug-26 17:17:13

I am now, quaking with fear!
grin.
Now, back to Meghan and Haz...

I never actually told anyone what to say, or what not to say, I just pointed out that it was an expression which lots of people would find offensive and to think before you post. I was brought up to be polite and not to use expressions which I know might offend.

MarieElla Sun 23-Aug-26 17:20:56

.....As derailing a thread is more offensive than 'swearing'...(never knew Jesus was a swear word)
The catholics I know (in Ireland) say 'Jesuswept'and the like all the time.
Maybe,it's cultural.

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Aug-26 17:24:37

I think this stuff would pass if they just quietly got on with life.

...It's taken a long time to rehabilitate the king, and Camilla.

I mean I sort of dont blame her if ever I ended up in the royal family I would be a complete nightmare grin but I agree it was never going to work.

It wouldn't work for me either - but I'd like to think that I'd be happy to carve out a small and relatively ordinary sort of life elsewhere... and just leave the "working royals" to get on with it.

Meghan being compared to Grace Kelly....jesuswept!!
Please don't ExDancer

Mariella- Try and see it the other way round- e.g. a poster says to you stop saying xxx/whatever..... For F* Sake!! Please don't'? A double whammy- telling them don't do XX and using a phrase viewed as offensive by many.

ExDancer posted 'Grace Kelly made a successful transition from actress to princess. There's an example for Meghan to follow.' perfectly ok personal view. post

You then tell ExDancer "Meghan being compared to Grace Kelly....jesuswept!! Please don't". Why 2 exclamation marks? Why tell Exdancer - please don't- telling her what she can or can't post?

Greyfur 13 posts " jesuswept" isn't nice really.' and you tell her "Best not tell a grown woman that something isn't nice.
It's your opinion and my expression to use as and when I want to".

Outside of its religious meaning, 'jesuswept' colloquially is often viewed as a swear word. Swear as much as you want but other people may take exception.

As you bluntly( your word) reserve your right to post whatever you like using whatever phrases/swear words you choose telling other posters "Best not tell a grown woman that something isn't nice" -its hardly a surprise they respond accordingly- in every case in a polite way.

It's not for the faint hearted! I think Chelsea Davy and Cressida Bonus saw the limitations and both opted for something else.

Or maybe they saw Harry as the stupid prat that he is, after all the trouble he's stirred up in the family, they dodged a bullet.

Meghan is different she was determined to stir up trouble from the start, planned the wedding to be as embarrassing as possible for the family

Iam64 Sun 23-Aug-26 18:39:50

I was brought up by a liberal minded mother (and father), we three children all Christened, sent to Sunday School and Church. When I was a rebellious 15- year old I rejected faith of any kind, refused to go to Church h I wouldn’t go to Church with mum to the Christmas Eve service. Ok she said but I’d say don’t reject Christianity, take the bits you find interesting and helpful and don’t worry about the bits you can’t accept.
Mum also rather like Buddhism and Judaism.
What she disliked intensely was bringing the Lord’s name into disrepute. As we teenagers began to use swear words, she insisted no using Jesus Wept or other curses.

MarieElla of course my mother’s influence won’t extend to you. Of course free speech is important but imo so is respecting the feelings of others. It will cost you nothing to refrain from using language that has upset some here. Your combative, rather patronising responses imo are unnecessary

Iam64 Sun 23-Aug-26 18:41:29

Oh yes - sorry for thread distraction, I should add one of the points of detailing influences on 77 year old me is the link to how much our parents and our relationships stay with us,

*Meghan wanted to be the star*

How do people think they know these things or can insert themselves in someone else's mind?

So you think she is a shrinking violet who doesn't want to be noticed.

Your judgement is off!

Iam64 Sun 23-Aug-26 18:52:06

Goodness David49, you’ve excelled yourself there. Seeing into the hearts and minds of Cressida and Chelsea, Knowing Megan was a trouble maker before many was a trouble before others joined your gang, oh yes and , Harry a pratt. I also suspect you’re giving Megan witch like powers - how else could she plan her wedding to be as embarrassing as possible for the family.

It’s feeling increasingly like knitting as the guilty are led to the guillotine. Though I don’t expect you’re a knitter

Ha ha Iam
You never know!

Iam64- I am also one of three children, christened, sent to Sunday school and also a rebellious teenager 😊 My mum forbade any swear words in her house- ever.

I remember years later she came to stay when I was an adult, married woman with children and Four Weddings and Funeral came on TV one Saturday night. First few scenes lots of 'f* words as characters alarms went off late or whatever. She said "we can't watch this, no swearing in my house"- her stock phrase. My husband pointed out 'but it's not your house is it'. They had an almighty row - he ended up swearing at her in exasperation and Mum then insisted I drive her home- 80 mile return journey as she would not stay in a house where there was swearing.

Her house or not she was offended by any swear word, in any context, in any setting.
