Interesting.
And the children starting school here.

David49 Sun 23-Aug-26 19:14:06

Im just judging H&M by their behaviour so far and I'm pretty sure Harry's other suitors would be horrified by his behavior.

Im quite happy to see the prodigal son return for a quiet life, I will even applaud him for doing it - when it happens.

Also Im pretty sure the majority in the UK have the same view as me, it seems only a few liberals on GN have a good word for them

Iam64 Sun 23-Aug-26 19:17:11

Exactly LemonJam, it’s important to remember how imo, different family life was. I never used the f word (in the past 🌞) mum n dad would have been distressed and disappointed (help )

Two of my grandchildren 7 and 10 years go to their village Catholic primary school, the head was happy they’d been baptised, didn’t mind in C or E not Catholic Chruch. It’s.a very happy famiky focussed school. They absolutely believe grandad (mr iam) is in heaven. the ten year old is questioning bible stories, the school teaches comparative religions, he’s (like his great gran) taken with Buddhism. They both shout at daddy for ‘a swear’ when he takes the Lords name in vain .

Respect for others is key in all the faiths

Jaysus!
I think it's time some of you started your own thread about 'the joys of not swearing/taking the Lord's name 'in vain. There's a religious/spiritual board.
I wonder if Harry and Meghan swear at each other??

Luckygirl3 Sun 23-Aug-26 19:32:23

* it seems only a few liberals on GN have a good word for them* - I'm not sure what that means.

Is it a liberal trait to regard hounding a couple and bombarding them with cutting criticism as unacceptable, or is it simple humanity?

Galaxy Sun 23-Aug-26 20:06:22

In my family ( atheist) rather ironically my mums favourite phrase was 'oh god' - I can hear her say it now. I do probably use it a fair bit, although maybe not on here. I am not sure how I feel about people deciding what is offensive or not - is it against GN guidelines? I have no idea.

Galaxy Sun 23-Aug-26 20:11:37

I will confess there are times I really really want to swear on here ( not at people) but I dont. I swear a lot on MN.

MarieElla Sun 23-Aug-26 20:18:27

I love the munsnet saying
'F*ck off, and when you get thete f*ck off some more'
😅

David49 Sun 23-Aug-26 20:47:40

No need for anyone to swear if you can't get the message across without swearing it's pretty sad. Probably a reflection of how society has deteriorated.

I’ve reported your offensive post MarieElla

I’ve reported your offensive post MarieElla

Well they seem to have allowed that and removed my post instead. Although my post pretty much says the same as their Talk Guidelines.

Talk Guidelines:
Some people like swearwords, some don’t. It’s very often possible to find an alternative way of expressing yourself, even if you have something burning to say. We'd appreciate it if users kept to those alternative ways of expressing themselves as much as possible.

I’m not taking sides here but I wonder why HQ are much stricter with us than Mumsnet?
Just because we’re getting on a bit (to put it mildly) do we have to be treated like toddlers in a playgroup?
I agree that personal attacks should be reported but swearing, or repeating something that includes swear words, especially when humour is intended is surely part of everyday life even if we don’t do it ourselves.

Galaxy Mon 24-Aug-26 09:58:00

I think it varies though when I came over here from the dark side I could not believe how much more free it was here to talk about certain subjects.

Luckygirl3 Mon 24-Aug-26 09:59:08

I'm a big girl now and can cope with hearing/reading swear words. And I do not think that words associated with a particular religion (which often feature as expletives) should be up for special treatment.

Clearly the aim is not to give offence and where someone takes offence then obviously we all temper what we say, especially face to face. But on a site like this with thousands of participants it is not possible to avoid upsetting someone at some point unless the discussions are to descend into banality.

MarieElla Mon 24-Aug-26 10:02:57

You're not wrong merlitgran.
I find some Gransnet posters to be more insistent and a tad domineering....
You can't really tell a grown woman how to behave. If it upsets you, just ignore it.

I see the security issue for Meg and H is in the news today.
If taxpayers are asked to pay they will become even more unpopular if that's possible!

Luckygirl3 Mon 24-Aug-26 10:07:58

So you think she is a shrinking violet who doesn't want to be noticed. Your judgement is off!

She is an actress!!! Her job is not to be a shrinking violet!

She is married to the son of a king! - she is bound to attract publicity!

eazybee Mon 24-Aug-26 10:14:47

The job of an actress is to act, not to show off.
She has as much idea of how to behave as a member of the royal family as Sarah Ferguson.

Sarah Ferguson knew the royal children and sometimes played with them when she was a child.

And - married Andrew.
Enough said.

Well exactly.

Where does seeking publicity stop and hounding begin? You seem to be in favour of the former.

Is only favourable publicity generated by their own PR team to be allowed?

Or should anything be referred to their PR before being printed?

Or should any negative comment on Social Media immediately be deleted?

High profile figures attract both positive and negative attention. That is the price of desiring a high profile life and using media to promote it.
Some people will have sympathy with what you say and do, some will disapprove and criticise.

I can’t see why you think it would or should be any different for them. Or why they should have special treatment that sets them apart from others that have chosen a high profile lifestyle.

Because they think we need protecting as we are old.
For the same reason they think we can’t sort out our own disagreements on this site and feel the need to step in to tell us to play nicely.

Usedtobeblonde Mon 24-Aug-26 11:00:30

Younger people forget we have been young ourselves and know all about it and have learned a lot more since.

Smileless2012 Mon 24-Aug-26 11:02:46

Clearly the aim is not to give offence initially maybe Luckygirl but when someone says they find it offensive surely the mature approach is to say none was intended and apologise, rather than finding other ways to continue to offend including the use of 'crying with laughter' emojis.

MarieElla Mon 24-Aug-26 11:11:42

Gransnet mods are not telling us to 'play nicely'...other Gransnetters are.
Sorry you were offened by my laughing emojis Smileless2012 but I find it funny when a poster says I've reported you.....like when we were in the playground aged 5 and a classmate says "I'm telling the teacher on you".
It is funny!
