Wrong side driving social media stunt

Following the recent crash in Ireland where 5 teenagers deliberately drove the wrong way on a motorway, killing themselves and seriously injuring 4 people in the car they crashed into, another has happened in Middlesborough. Again 5 young lads driving against the traffic on an A road, all killed plus 2 police officers. A total of 12 people dead in 2 crashes all because they want to get 'likes' on TikTok. What mind thinks up a challenge like this?

Are you blaming the police for this crash FranP

That's certainly how it comes across. Perhaps FranP can tell us how they would have done it differently?

SueDonim Mon 07-Sept-26 18:12:31

From an account I read, the police had tried to stop the car with five occupants with a Stinger, just before it went onto the dual carriageway but the manoeuvre wasn’t successful, sadly.

Not sure why a head on crash was necessary. Surely stingers could have been deployed?

Have you read exactly what happened in that crash. Obviously not.
The police car that was hit by the killers of the policemen wasn’t involved in the police chase.

Tik Tok needs to be banned in the UK immediately!

If they cannot control their content, I agree.

They are fighting the suggestion with adverts about their educational content. If that is the case it needs to be split off, but monitoring and cutting younger folks off should be a first step.
The lads were already part of the underclass so perhaps not the fault of TikTok. Members of their family have already torched cars etc

The man charged with arson which killed a 7 year old girl and her aunt has appeared in court this morning. Seems like more revenge attacks as the aunt had a family member heavily involved with local crime. What an dreadful place for decent people to live.

I’ve just seen on the news that another house was rammed last night in the same area, which may also be linked. It seems like open warfare, I feel for the innocent residents, they must be scared to go out of their homes.

Galaxy Thu 27-Aug-26 07:23:24

The Middlesborough one is not a traveller issue from what we can see it is an underclass/ criminal gang thing.
This isnt to say there isnt an issue with driving deaths in the traveller community, there very obviously is but unless info changes not in this case.

Local Authority managed sites aren't closed there will usually be a warden in control and we reasonably organized. Locally there are 3 illegal sites where groups have just moved in to a field without any kind of permission once they are in and the gates erected it's almost impossible to move them. These are the sites that cause the real problems and there are a lot of them.

Sarnia Thu 27-Aug-26 04:15:41

There is a much bigger story unfolding here. It seems like 2 rival groups/gangs hell bent on revenge over something.

Latest. Murder probe after two found dead in a house in Middlesbrough.

Something was bound to happen after the crash and the occupants in the other car.
The crash has caused untold trouble for the occupants of the other car.

Thank you OldFrill this point was made previously, but people aren’t listening - or reading.

👏👏👏 Listening and reading.

You ask how did these burgeoning Kamikaze get away with it.
One word: cuts,
The police.
Social workers.
Youth centres.
Youth workers.
Plus the experience of many ex gang members who wanted to help and educate these kids but weren’t given money to rent premises.
Thank you George Osborne and all who came after him for the next 14 years. 🤬

Totally agree. It's pointless saying "lock them up and throw away the key" when prisons are full to bursting, police are understaffed and the probation service has been privatised.

prisons are full to bursting
Listening to a very good piece on this subject.
In a recent 12 month period there were 51, 000 recalls.
These recalls sometimes outnumber new court sentenced arrivals.
You can be recalled for various reasons. One of them being that you gave an address when you were let out but then had to move ( homeless)
A letter goes to that address. You don’t receive it let alone answer it. A breach of your release.

The la official traveller sites aren’t closed in any official way, strangers, teachers, health visitors, social workers and police can walk in to the sites. Police are I expect universally unwelcome, Others will be approached by men and dogs, can feel intimidating, but once accepted will usually be treated politely, even friendly
The closed idea is the community’s need to keep unwanted, prospective trouble makers or snoops out

greyfur16 Wed 26-Aug-26 19:33:16

I suppose anything "closed" isn't good. Be it a camp, a religion, a toxic relationship.

Unfortunately there aren't the rescources to help any more.

Iam64 Wed 26-Aug-26 19:23:11

David, your point about ‘closed camps’ could be seen as suggesting the powers that be enforce closed camps which suspect you didn’t intend.
The local authority run traveller sites are in many ways very positive, children attend local schools who accommodate absences for travelling, usually June to September. It’s usually women, mums aunties, grans, big sisters who escort the children to school. I’ve never heard of children from the sites not being escorted to and from school.
‘Officials’ don’t find a relaxing welcoming committee. My own experience has been it’s not easy to establish trust but once it’s been, often reluctantly, established things go well. I accept, I wasn’t going in as a police officer, but I never felt the need to ask police to accompany me - not always the caseb

We don't know but seventeen of their associates have now been arrested on suspicion of firearms, drugs and other offences including organised crime.

Traveler children dont have a chance, they are raised in closed camps where thieving, fighting, domestic abuse and lawlessness is normal so they follow the example.

Closed camps where nobody knows anything and hasn't seen anything, police are the enemy and dont enter unless they have a riot squad on standby. They attract other criminals that use them as cover for many criminal activity's.

Until closed camps are banned nothing is going to change

There are no confirmed reports any of the young men in the English incident were from the travelling community. 3 in the Irish incident were confirmed from the travelling community.

Whilst l take your point, it's not right that it's assumed these incidents relate to the travelling community when they don't.

I find it quite disturbing that some GNs take the "Good riddance, I shan't be shedding any tears" attitude to the deaths of these young men.

We seem to be a warm hearted, sympathetic and supportive lot most of the time but it also seems that a hard nosed and callous element creeps in at times.

Well said!

I read one of the mothers of the young men killed on Ireland giving heartfelt condolences to the innocent victims
