Mark Carney is becoming the new leader of the western world

I have been watching and listening to Mark Carney over a number of months, and have come to admire his political instincts and strength he has shown when dealing with Trump.

Whilst the rest of the world decided that flattering Trump was the best way forward, Carney understood that this can never work in the long run, and from the very first Carney made it clear that he will never dance to Trump’s tune.

It has become clear that America can no longer be depended on for either trade or as a defence partner, and Carney, as a result has focused on negotiating trade agreement with a number of countries, and is just embarking on a massive trade agreement with the EU.

Carney’s political instincts are showing real results, and I envy Canada their leader.

I live in Canada and we are very proud of Mark Carney, he has a gentle, but firm way of dealing with Mr Trump. Canada holds the power in the trade talks because of him.

I always felt we were in safe hands when he was at the Bank of England

Mark Carney has my respect.

Carney is definitely the better man. Vance has insulted Carney causing a breakdown in tariff talks.
Vance said " Carney puffs up his chest and tries to out tough Trump"
Easy done I believe as Trump is weak and peevish. He is the typical playground type bully but a coward at heart.

I am so proud to have Carney as our leader...a real grown up in the room for a change compared to what we had in the past and what we have in the leader of the opposition. Trump's retaliation will come, I have no doubt, and yes, there will be economic short-term pain for Canada but I believe Carney's vision and resolve will result in long term gain mainly through connection with other middle powers and much much greater distance from the US. I hope enough of those opposed to Trump in the US will gather for the mid-terms and disrupt the state of the union in the US.

Agree 100% ..

Trump is beginning to make USA very isolated ! Carney has the measure of him and speaks common sense , something Trump does not understand. I am team Carney all the way and I hope other world leaders get on board with him !
In my view , for what it is worth, Trump is frightened of Russia, China and North Korea.

Smileless2012 Wed 26-Aug-26 15:38:28

A toddler could out tough Trump. Where has Trump's so called toughness got him and America?

I have an enormous amount of respect for Mark Carney too.

Strangely though this isn’t necessarily shared by all his fellow countrymen.

We recently had a visit to the UK from my Canadian cousin, living in Ottawa, she came en route, with DH and two sons, to Greece, where her in-laws live as her husband is Greek-Canadian.

We spoke briefly about Mr Carney and she was less than complimentary, however I couldn’t really discover if that’s due to him being the wrong political persuasion or just the normal stuff that people say about their leaders, after all no one is perfect. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I still admire him though!

I agree with all the above and do hope that Burnham does business with Carney as well as getting closer to the EU in order to protect British interests.
The US has become unreliable and dangerous so let’s just forget the special relationship, Trump certainly has.

I entirely agree, well put!

As Carney is one of the few who will stand up to Trump I will be on his side.

Iamthewalrus Wed 26-Aug-26 15:56:13

As a Canadian, I appreciate all the support for Carney on this forum. He is such a treasure and came to us at just the right time. Cool, collected, polite but firm. We think that going forward he should speak solely in French to Trump. As far as poking the bear, someone has to and considering we have the most to lose we are not afraid of the Thing south of the border.
Our sovereignty depends on our push back.

Trump is a bully and Carney has his mark from the start. You stand up to bullies. Good for him

Oh do so agree!

, there will be economic short-term pain for Canada

Most Canadians can weather this?

I dont have a whole heap of knowledge about the finances of the average Canadian.

Another admirer of Carney here. Good luck to him, and best wishes to the Canadian GNers - how nice that there are quite a few of you. Please keep us up to date with what's going on there.

I think you should be. He is intelligently fighting for your/his country.

Pity that people didn’t listen to Carneys advice to not leave the EU when he was head of the Bank of England…

I was just about to remind people of his successful period as Governor of the Bank of England after the 2008 financial crisis.

During the crisis he was governor of the Canadian central bank and they managed to steer clear of all the problemd we had.

Delene100 Wed 26-Aug-26 17:07:16

Me neither. Trump won't be around forever. Carney's approach in dealing with bully Trump is the right one.

There's a good interview with him on TRIP's Leading from a while back.

I think the Canadians deserve their leader.
If it was us next door to USA, I don't think we'd have pulled together & rallied behind our leader (at a cost of some personal sacrifice for many).
We'd have spent our time criticising his bold actions.
Canadians choosing not to holiday in the USA, many with RSVs that have enjoyed doing that for years; they have united behind a cause - stand up to Trump.
No Farage's & camp-followers there saying "oh, just what we need here" & hampering concerted action.
All power to your elbow Canada.

Mark Carney held our economy stead through some turbulent years at the BoE. I think he's probably one of the most skilled and competent politicians around at the moment. He's in an unenviable geographical position but Canada has great resources of its own. They are reaching out worldwide where the Trump administration is building distrust and alienation. It would be good to see everyone benefit but that is always open to horrible derailment by the current US regime. How observant of Margaret Atwood....
