Mark Carney is becoming the new leader of the western world

I have been watching and listening to Mark Carney over a number of months, and have come to admire his political instincts and strength he has shown when dealing with Trump.

Whilst the rest of the world decided that flattering Trump was the best way forward, Carney understood that this can never work in the long run, and from the very first Carney made it clear that he will never dance to Trump’s tune.

It has become clear that America can no longer be depended on for either trade or as a defence partner, and Carney, as a result has focused on negotiating trade agreement with a number of countries, and is just embarking on a massive trade agreement with the EU.

Carney’s political instincts are showing real results, and I envy Canada their leader.

I do too WW, he's been a breath of fresh air. I've found the flattering approach of other leaders nauseating to say the least, including KS.

Not sure what AB's approach is going to be but I hope he takes a leaf out of Carney's book.

Trump is a bully and Carney has his mark from the start. You stand up to bullies. Good for him

I agree with all the above and do hope that Burnham does business with Carney as well as getting closer to the EU in order to protect British interests.
The US has become unreliable and dangerous so let’s just forget the special relationship, Trump certainly has.

I cant help but think it could all backfire.
Could be wrong.

It has already backfired. The US is plunging us all into yet another cost of living crisis due to the ongoing war with Iran. Trumps escapades could be called
‘Operation Backfire’.

Poking the bear.

Trump get his own back, big time, in some way.

Trump has not done that yet to any world leader who stands up to him though, he actually seems to crumble in the face of adversity.

I respect Carney, he seems an honest man who cares about his country.

Full marks to Carney. The leader Canada needs.

I very much doubt it.

However I do think that his behaviour may well get worse after the mid-terms.

I liked that Mark Carney described that all Trumps agreements, or decisions as being written in pencil.

He could not be more correct.

I'm on team Carney. A proper statesman.

LemonJam Tue 25-Aug-26 19:26:32

Another here on team Carney and Canada- a better statesman than Trump will and could ever be.

I know we are in for some tough times ahead with the falling apart of the CUSMA agreement, but I know the majority of Canadians support Carney and his cabinet.

Given that Trump changes his mind like the wind, and rarely finalises any agreements with other countries, it’s probably pretty accurate in fact. That’s not an opinion, it’s reality, lived through his reported actions.

Try making 2 lists, one listing decisions and agreements that remain standing

And the other that have failed.

I give you one guess as to which will be longer.

Pity that people didn’t listen to Carneys advice to not leave the EU when he was head of the Bank of England…

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Aug-26 08:12:35

There appears quite a lot of difference between the two sides in the trade agreement.

One was the USA’s insistence that Canada drop the French language on goods labels!!

What a cheek! Who on earth are they to interfere into another country’s culture?

A piqued Trump then announced that Lake Ontario will be known as Lake America

Carney walked away and an unprecedented 76% of Canadians backed his decision.

Politically Carney has strengthened his position.

The world is watching, and Trumps stupidity is confirmed.

Perhaps Team Trump will tell us all what's good about the man.

petra Wed 26-Aug-26 08:38:45

Listening to an ex liberal party minister who explained the reason for the collapse of the talks was the demand that all future trade negotiations that Canada engage in goes through Trump.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Aug-26 08:46:44

The rest of the world should take note and follow Canada. It is time we sought an alternative to what America is offering .

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 26-Aug-26 09:45:04

I admire Carney's stance but it's too simplistic to believe all countries could act in the same way. Over time, with or without Trump, I could imagine America finding they have lost their place as the "leaders of the free world".

I don't see this as a bad thing for average Americans, but, in my view, the American understanding of the rest of the world needs to change or they may become isolated. Having said that, our leaving the EU seems part of a pattern of isolation so perhaps that's the way the world is moving. I hope it isn't.

You may be interested to watch Richard J Murphy's latest podcadcast. It's title is "Is Donald Trump At War With Canada" which leads him to thd question " do we have a duty to defend Canada." It's an interesting view.
