The king has put it writing

King Charles has issued a letter stating that H&M are not working Royals and as such should be treated as normal citizens of they attend anything. Also their HRH titles can Still NOT be used.
Laying down the ground rules.
Harry keeps on about their security but surely they had some in the USA which they had to pay for so why is it different in the UK.

*I can just imagine Meghan stamping her feet and having a tantrum.* - and that is exactly what it is - imagination.

The letter says nothing that is not already known and established a long time ago. H &M did not leave the firm in order to be a part of it.

The DM loves to do a bit of stirring. Let us not succumb to it.

I know it's imagination.
The whole thread is "I'd imagine"

My poor attempt at irony.

According to Radio 4 just now, the Sussexes have “expressed surprise” and say it has come as news to them, querying the timing.
The Palace has contradicted them and said they had been made fully aware .

So, trying it on?
Disingenuous?
Wishful thinking?
I’m glad all is now out in the open anyway.

I .would believe the Palace over H&M

Surely this letter was nothing more than a standard formal letter to government and royal dignatories (Lords Lieutenants and the like, reminding them of what the official situation is.

The last one was issued over 5 years ago when the family moved abroad. A reminder of the rules, now they have returned only seems sensible. It really is no big deal.

It’s yet another attempt by the tiresome twosome to claim victim status.

Smileless2012 Tue 08-Sept-26 12:02:03

I think it is a big deal M0nica. It needed saying because even though H & M know the rules that doesn't stop them flouting them.

Calendargirl Tue 08-Sept-26 12:10:53

Apparently, H&M were ‘a little surprised’ to have received hardly any notice about the letter, before it was published.

Probably the King was ‘a little surprised’ to find their UK return was a done deal before they thought fit to mention it to the RF.

🤷‍♀️

David49 Tue 08-Sept-26 13:42:56

H&M need to watch their step or the titles may be removed and they revert to Mr & Mrs Something. It's pretty clear father is not going to put up with any more nonsense from these two.

Oh crumbs.

They are still trying to push things.
Sigh.

Was Harry always like this?
I dont remember him being so.
But perahps I wasnt paying much attention.

I thought it was just saying that any event they attended was going to be in a private, not royal, capacity.

They may well attended things privately that (say) William or Catherine attended as well - representing the crown.

I reckon pigs will fly, crash and burn before Harry and Meghan will be invited to any event where William and Catherine are attending to represent the crown.

It’s yet another attempt by the tiresome twosome to claim victim status.

So much for letting the dust settle after the big surprise return, mending fences, or keeping a low profile in the rural backwoods so they can enjoy maximum privacy.

H &M will be attending charitable events but the king has made it clear to everyone that they are not working royals.
Their status will only be that of celebrities.

So the Palace claim Monica, but Harry suggests the timing of the public release is an attempt to influence his security review which is imminent.

fancythat Tue 08-Sept-26 14:50:58

I cant imagine they will want to be merely "celebrities".

I keep imaging their wedding, if they had only been celebrities.

fancythat Tue 08-Sept-26 14:52:19

Harry needs to give up the idea of security.
He will have to fund what he thinks he needs, himself.

The security committee is meeting this week to discuss the level of tax payer security that will be given to the Sussexes.
Don't think we should be paying for their security when they are not working royals.

Smileless2012 Tue 08-Sept-26 15:05:32

If his security is being reviewed then their status needed to be clarified so no one would be any doubt that they are private citizens, and not entitled to the security status of working royals which is decided by RAVIC not the royal family.

IMO the only attempt to influence is coming from Harry who is using concerns about his children's safety, to emotionally blackmail his father and the authorities.

Calendargirl Tue 08-Sept-26 15:09:45

I think the Palace is very aware that the tax payers of this country would not welcome paying security costs for these ‘non working’ royals.

Would not be seen as acceptable.

I cannot see any reason why this should affect the security review. All it is doing is re-asserting the status quo

History is littered with younger, royal siblings behaving like this. It's as if they cannot cope with 'coming second' and go all out to irritate or destroy the older sibling's life / job.

winterwhite Tue 08-Sept-26 15:18:00

Agree that the letter says nothing new but it was probably issued as a result of some move or request by H and M.

Plevey08 Tue 08-Sept-26 15:21:47

I don't think the letter/announcement was necessary, unless it's to assuage the public and deter any public dissent re funding for them.
He is a member of the royal family, through an accident of birth, with a wife and a young prince and princess.
They should have security, perhaps partly funded by the King. After all wouldn't he want to ensure his grandchildren are safe. I think he has a personal duty to do this.

mbody Tue 08-Sept-26 15:22:20

The main problem is that the press will cover everything Harry and Megan do, at great length, which keeps them in the spotlight which is what they want. What a spoilt entitled pair they are,

BlessedArt Tue 08-Sept-26 15:24:59

I’m pretty sure that Charles’ letter was to re-emphasize to the media the most what has long been established between all the relevant parties, but those who care too much and spend too much energy imaging the inner feelings of these famous folks will run wild with their imaginations. The public’s obsession with this couple is actually worse than American celebrity culture. These people (should) have zero impact on our lives. Too much attention is paid to non-policy makers.
