I'm pleased to hear that our government is putting sanctions on dealing with Israeli West Bank settlers. It's so outrageously unfair for Israel to encroach on the West Bank in this way.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 10-Sept-26 09:36:48

The trouble is that violent attacks and protests are becoming the norm in british society, so minorities are going to feel threatened and frightened.

The police, politicians, media, religious institutions, schools etc all need to condemn, and come down hard on everyone who incites or carries out violence or hate speech.

It must be clearly understood that violence and hate towards minorities or a particular group in society will never ever be tolerated.

Graceless Thu 10-Sept-26 09:41:11

Finally we have government that actually have some principles and is prepared to act on them. Well done Ed!

Basgetti Thu 10-Sept-26 10:29:19

Oreo

The main reservation about these sanctions is that they endanger British Jews.
I realise that doesn’t matter to many.
Antisemitism has been steadily rising in the UK.

Of course it matters. So do the horrific attacks on Palestinian people and the illegal seizing of their land.
Do you suggest other nations just turn a blind eye?

Oreo Thu 10-Sept-26 10:55:46

The UK didn’t apply sanctions until Ed Miliband took over as Foreign Secretary.
The man is a zealot. Both on this issue and on green energy .

foxie48 Thu 10-Sept-26 11:44:00

I think Ed Miliband is "principled" not a "zealot". The behaviour of some settlers in the West Bank is violent and illegal. The UK government (with other govts) have turned their backs for far too long and because the Israeli govt has not only ignored the behaviour of the settlers but assisted them, it has tainted the whole of Israel's population. I am not surprised that many Jews living outside Israel condemn the settler action. TBH the surprise is that any Jews condone it.

ronib Thu 10-Sept-26 11:54:44

Israel’s problem.
Israel’s solution.
Why does one of the most incompetent countries on earth have the right to interfere?

Casdon Thu 10-Sept-26 11:55:51

I don’t know ronib, you should be addressing your question to Mr Trump himself.

ronib Thu 10-Sept-26 11:56:38

Casdon and I guess Mr Trump will reply? Bit of a non starter

Wyllow3 Thu 10-Sept-26 12:02:03

I'm genuinely not clear, ronib, on the point you are trying to make, when you say,

"Israel’s problem.
Israel’s solution."

Please can you just make clear what you mean?

ronib Thu 10-Sept-26 12:05:57

Why does the rest of the world feel the need to make their opinions felt?
After the massacre of over 1,000 Jews, why on earth should Israel ever bother about world interference?

Wyllow3 Thu 10-Sept-26 12:13:28

That isn't answering the question. It read to me just like a provocative interjection.
The people of the West Bank deserve better? When we cease to care, where does that leave us?

Casdon Thu 10-Sept-26 12:14:22

Since October 7, 2023, over ten percent of the population of Gaza has been directly killed or injured in two years of Israel's war in Gaza.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 12:29:35

The UK and other countries have had to step in because Israel turn a blind eye and some of their government encourage those on the west bank.

Blaming the UK for the rise in antisemitism is wrong. The blame lies firmly with Israel.

ronib Thu 10-Sept-26 12:35:34

My conversation with my Jewish optician after the massacre - Israel will never again look for permission but will take control of its actions over the next 100 years applies. And yes, it’s frightening.

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 12:45:40

Yes ronib and we are allowed to 'take charge' of how we respond to genocide.

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-26 13:27:01

I struggle with blaming Israel for the world wide rise in antisemitism . I dislike distrust the current Israeli government, loathe the illegal Settlers but many Israeli’s and Jewish people who don’t live in Israel express similar views to mine.

Jewish people were criticised for meekly allowing ghettos, then walking to their death in concentration camps. There are reports that like ronib’s optician, many Jewish people said in future they’d fight back. The country is surrounded by others that threaten its existence. I’m not condoning what is happening in Gaza, it’s shameful and needs to stop. Sadly, it seems likely Netanyahu will be reelected and things get even worse.
We need an American President who demands and works constructively towards peace. I’m relieved at the number of countries taking a similar approach to us

Labour are history. They have chosen to nail their colours with the flag of Islam but the Muslims are forming their own parties and they will absolutely desert them anyway.

The loonies with the dyed hair, multiple piercings and angry faces, will vote Green and the majority of their younger voters will mature, as many of us did, once we had responsibilities and vote centre right.

Unfortunately for Labour, many youngsters nowadays are agreeing with Mr (Sex Pistols fame) who said. "I never thought I'd live to see the day when the right wing would become the cool ones giving the middle finger to the establishment and the left wing becoming the snivelling self-righteous t****y ones going around shaming everyone."

It will be a great day for Britain, when this once great party of the workers, who are now the party of the shirkers, are part of antiquity. In my opinion.

Casdon Thu 10-Sept-26 13:50:55

You do make me laugh FriedGreenTomatoes2, when you come out with statements like ‘Labour are history’. A tad over dramatic I feel!

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 13:52:09

Each to their own.

Lydon now supports Trump ( he is an American citizen now). Given that he only took out American citizenship because of Obama I think he has some very conflicting views these days.

ronib Thu 10-Sept-26 13:55:50

Maremia how we respond to genocide? Our response is likely to see more dead on both sides over the coming decades. Nothing has been actively suggested to stop the killings.

Fallingstar Thu 10-Sept-26 13:58:45

Maremia

Each to their own.

Indeed.
Opinions are opinions and people are free to express themselves, but facts are facts. And nobody can dispute that illegal settlements are exactly that ‘illegal’, but a blind eye has been turned for decades because as Jeremy Bowen said the other night ‘the US has always let things slide with Israel’.
The time to deal with this was many years ago but hopefully this Johnny come lately political action by western governments will do some good.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 13:59:20

I bet Lyndon and I would get on well together then! 🤣
Thanks for remembering his surname Maybee I’d forgotten it.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:00:26

I used to support Labour back in the day. Starmer finished me off.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:01:43

Casdon I think Labour MPs know their days in government are numbered.
