Full marks Government

I'm pleased to hear that our government is putting sanctions on dealing with Israeli West Bank settlers. It's so outrageously unfair for Israel to encroach on the West Bank in this way.

Fallingstar

Each to their own.

Indeed.
Opinions are opinions and people are free to express themselves, but facts are facts. And nobody can dispute that illegal settlements are exactly that ‘illegal’, but a blind eye has been turned for decades because as Jeremy Bowen said the other night ‘the US has always let things slide with Israel’.
The time to deal with this was many years ago but hopefully this Johnny come lately political action by western governments will do some good.

Now I’m laughing again FallingStar, that was very clever, are they Johnny Rotten come latelies?

Fallingstar Thu 10-Sept-26 14:16:45

🤣🤣

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:17:27

No Casdon bc Johnny Rotten would not support this action by this government.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:23:18

What does Sid Vicious think?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:27:41

Well he died in 1971 aged 21 of a heroin overdose so 🤷‍♀️

greyfur16 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:27:51

If Labour are finished....what's next? I don't think it will be Nigel Farage.

What does Sid Vicious think?

He would say “Undermine their pompous authority, reject their moral standards, make anarchy and disorder your trademarks."

FGT2 I was just laughing because of the play on words of ‘Johnny come lately’ in Fallingstar’s post - not sure if it was coincidental or not.

Why on earth do you, or anyone else think “Labour will be finished” ?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:46:28

I did understand that Casdon 😁

I agree greyfur it won’t be Reform UK I don’t see how they can go from 5 MPs to whatever necessary do you? Much as I’d like! You can all rest easy in your beds 🤣

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:10:43

I think Cossy Labour will lose their relevance over time. It won’t be instantaneous however the Muslim votes will go to their own party soon enough and Labour will be in Opposition for a long long time.

Their incumbent MPs (most) will lose their seats at the next GE. They’d best make hay while the sun shines.

greyfur16 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:17:30

Which is the Muslim Party?

I'm really confused now.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:28:34

Don’t be confused greyfur bc there isn’t one at present. ‘Aspire’ is the nearest to it but it’s localised to Towwr Hamlets on issues .

However mainstream media posits that like Reform UK it’s going to happen.

I for one would not be at all surprised.

This from Wiki illustrates it better than I can:

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is under the full political control of an exclusively Bangladeshi-Islamic male-only political party, called Aspire. Replacing Labour as the party in power in 2022, Aspire shocked the political establishment by winning the local elections with no mainstream support, sectarian campaigning, and a leader, Lutfur Rahman, previously banned from office due to electoral fraud and practicing undue spiritual influence.

The case of the Aspire Party, which only operates in Tower Hamlets, has become increasingly common in multicultural Britain under the increasing influence of Islam. Whilst Muslims make up 6.5 per cent of the total UK population, they account for 40 per cent of the Tower Hamlets population — making it the most Islamic and most Bangladeshi local authority in Britain. Although still unusual, the election of several independent “Pro-Gaza” MPs, the disruption of Parliament and political meetings has alerted political commentators of the increasingly isolated political views of British Muslims from the mainstream. Tower Hamlets, in a sense, is the first British manifestation of such opinion.

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:30:52

Much as I remain a Labour Party member and supporter I suspect the boat carrying Muslim voters sailed a couple of years ago, Gaza was and remains a huge issue for the Muslim communities. We have independents and Greens increasingly from there.
I’m living in hope that Andy Burnham has enough time and skill to undo the damage done during Keir Starmer’s leadership. We can rehash the arguments endlessly but it can’t be denied that he inspired very strong negative feelings in so many people

I’m hoping Reform has written itself out other than by a small number (fgt remains faithful 🌞)

I never thought I’d look back fondly to one nation, clever Conservatives. We need an effective opposition and I’m not persuaded that we have one, or its leader

Still we don’t have Trump, Nigel couldn’t even succeed in being mini Trump

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:32:16

X posted there FGT
Thanks I’d missed that

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:33:39

We are sympatico in many ways Iam.
Not in all but definitely in some. There’s not that much clear blue water between us on some issues.

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:36:31

I know! Its one of the joys of gransnet that disagreeing on some issues creates great rows /discussions

Iam64 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:38:01

Opposite sides of any fence on Israel and Trump but from sincerely held views

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:46:56

Breaking news

Hamas has praised Ed Miliband’s sanctions on Israel.

Ok.
And who is listening to them??
Well you obviously but I doubt anyone who matters is listening to them.
Ed didn’t do this to gain brownie points with a terrorist organisation.
Also we are talking about illegal settlements on the West Bank so outside of that organisation’s remit.
Still, it makes for good copy for those who believe Israel should be allowed to break international laws.

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 16:08:28

And so have 'some' Rabbis.

Fallingstar Thu 10-Sept-26 16:08:52

Laws are laws and countries have been sanctioned for much less.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:12:31

They would wouldn't they.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:17:05

Last post in answer to Hamas praising Miliband.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:20:59

When a terrorist organisation endorses Milliband that should surely raise red flags.
