It's tricky to come up with anything NOT taxed. But doubtless the political boffins will find something.

How does the tourist tax work?
Who does the "paperwork?"

If I stay in a campsite do I have to pay x% extra for the privilege?

I was about to let a room on Airbnb but their suggested tariff meant that I would only receive some money and the company would get a huge cut. All the bookings are online and paid online. How does that help the local economy?

I doubt your area has a tourist tax. If in doubt Google and also check with Airbnb

The local economy would be helped if the guest spent money there - eating out, drinks, souvenirs and entrance fees - that sort of thing,

Aveline 😂 true! I don't live in a tourist destination.

Just like any other tax, honest businesses pay what is due on their turnover in addition to business rates, most transactions are online so it not difficult to audit.

Of course the black economy will commit fraud and suffer the penalties

I have paid it in other European cities, before I was shown my room. I am supposed to inform my local townhall when I have visitors, I think, but there again I don’t do airb&b.

It helps to pay for the infrastructure, why not? People want clean water, transport etc. and I don’t want to subsidize their visit.

One thing tourist tax does pay for is extra policing in tourist areas to prevent local criminals targeting visitors

Yes, campsites will have to collect the visitor tax if it's due.

Airbnb take around 16% commission I think. I was never short of bookings and the process was straightforward. Seeing guest reviews and being able to communicate with them before they booked was reassuring, especially as l lived alone.

Airbnb take any visitor tax due when a person books, passing it on to the host who pays the council, all online.

Thanks OldFrill . I'm glad you enjoyed your experience as host.

I'm downsizing now so too late for me but DSiL in York is a host who, like you, enjoys being an Airbnb host.

Sarnia

Burnham is desperate to keep the benefit claimants voting for Labour. Benefits before defence. What a way to run a country!

You mean like pensioners I presume as the state pension is classed as a benefit 🙄 😒
