‘Signs of violence’: asylum seekers arriving in France injured after being deported from UK. Do Asylum seekers deserve to be kept safe from harm and injury on arrival in the UK?

Is the UK in danger of losing empathy for those seeking asylum whilst their claims are being processed? French health service documents injuries including fractures and bruising after detention and return under ‘one in one out’ scheme
.
The pilot scheme involves one asylum seeker who crosses the Channel in a small boat being returned to France in return for another in northern France being legally brought to the UK to claim asylum. The scheme is due to end on 1 October.
Samusocial de Paris (SSP) has been commissioned by Île-de-France’s regional health agency to provide healthcare for asylum seekers returned to France in the first eight days after their deportation from the UK, when they are accommodated in a shelter in Paris.

They have documented the cases of 90 returnees between 22 January and 7 June 2026. All are young men, mostly in their 20s and early-30s, who sought sanctuary in the UK after fleeing a variety of conflict zones including Eritrea, Sudan and Afghanistan. About 1,400 people have been forcibly removed to France by the Home Office since the scheme began in August 2025.

The evidence compiled by SSP has been submitted to the French Assembly’s cross-party inquiry into the impact of the Anglo-French border deals known as Le Touquet agreements. This evidence comes from their own clinical consultations with returnees and some hospital reports from those sent to A&E.

According to the report: “Consultations are revealing signs consistent with recent physical and psychological violence as well as the consequences of prolonged detention in conditions described as particularly degrading.” It states that the physical and psychological conditions documented are “explicitly linked to the implementation of the France-British agreement”.
The report adds: “The frequency and recurrence of the incidents reported by people transferred under the Franco-British agreement appear particularly worrying.”

SSP recommends that a mechanism should be established to collect information on allegations of mistreatment by the British authorities that can be sent to the UK. It also suggests reporting this issue to the French prosecutor under article 40 of the French code of criminal procedure.

Nihal Osman, a programme coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières, which also provides health support for this group of returnees, said: “This one in one out agreement is a machine for psychological destruction. The deeply concerning physical injuries sustained whilst in detention in the United Kingdom, which we have documented among those deported, must be viewed in the light of a serious psychological deterioration.”

The UK Home Office and the company Mitie, which provides the guards for the asylum seekers, have been approached for comment.

Both desperate and realistic. The Lib Dems were all for open borders and how horrid Reform were for wanting to stop anyone coming here. The idea of turning anyone back was unthinkable. But those words actually came from his mouth, to send them back! Couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Casdon Tue 22-Sept-26 17:12:07

It’s not realistic unless we go down the same route as the USA has done. This makes scary reading.

So is it 5 people or an invasion please?

Like I’ve said before
None so blind……….😉

Maremia Wed 23-Sept-26 08:05:56

And now that convicted thug 'Tommo' has slashed an inflatable boat, while a rescue worker was on board.
Incident is on film.

Will you kindly add more here please.

I am not blind, I see a problem with uncontrolled migration, a big mess.
I don't think meeting it with hate is the way forward.

Hate??? When have I mentioned that word please?
Yes, actually, I can add a bit more…
And I’m sure there are many,many more…

greyfur16 Thu 24-Sept-26 07:29:22

I wasn't referring to you using the word "hate".

Shinamae Thu 24-Sept-26 13:00:47

You can see the evidence, we are being invaded by stealth
Home office is not happy that they missed these two recent attempts to get to our shores
How many more have they “missed”?🤔
I actually shudder to think what this country will be like in even five years…. If this ridiculous situation goes on, we are a tiny tiny country. We are already overfilled have not got enough infrastructure for people who are already here and it’s no good saying “ well that’s the government’s fault”It is what it is and it’s too much… And it won’t be affecting the majority of MPs who will be sitting in their ivory towers it won’t touch them offering occasional platitudes…. Makes me sick

Shinamae Mon 28-Sept-26 12:40:03

And now this……😬

Maremia Mon 28-Sept-26 12:43:02

And that just shows how effectively the new Labour border control plans are working.
Well done Labour.

I most certainly do.

Good evidence of Police working with Home Office and doing a really good job 👏👏

BBC Website: “Ten people have been arrested after a number of individuals were reported coming off a small powerboat at a harbour in Cornwall, getting in a van and then leaving the area.

A Home Office spokesperson said police responded quickly to an "isolated and rare" incident at Mylor Harbour, near Falmouth, on Sunday morning at about 03:00 BST.
It confirmed 10 individuals were arrested and another individual, understood to be under 18, was referred to social services.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed officers had arrested two Albanian nationals on suspicion of immigration offences. Officers added that Immigration Enforcement was leading the investigation.

The Home Office said the clandestine entry did not involve a small inflatable boat carrying a large number of migrants, but a small powerboat carrying a small number of people”.

Yes,police NOT border force..
Of course they’re going to say it’s isolated and rare..🤨

LemonJam Mon 28-Sept-26 18:38:24

The Police ( first response) and Home Office ( will take those arrested into immigration detention services and for deportation process) are working together. Police are not working in isolation. Well done to both 👏👏

Social Services will also work in partnership with the Home Office and The Appropriate Adult Service (TAAS) regarding the person understood to be under 18. Detailed and multiagency Age Assessment will be conducted.

Labour has spurred such prioritisation and better cross agency co-ordination in such matters and poured additional funding into such matters. Well done Labour 👏

Millions of boats enter UK harbours every year, I don’t know how it would be possible to check every one before anybody disembarks.

Maremia Mon 28-Sept-26 22:01:56

Yes, well done.

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:03:38

When asylum seekers on dinghies get trampled to death it’s always women and children.

Before we get too carried away with heady success….a huge number of immigrants are arriving still.

And they’re now getting in any way they can!
18 arrived by dinghy near Falmouth, Cornwall last night and most still on the run.

Casdon Tue 29-Sept-26 10:10:49

Have some of us not been saying for years that whatever measures are put in place will not stop determined people from getting to the UK. Anybody who says that is possible is wrong. Reducing the numbers arriving, and removing people who should not be here, in cooperation with their countries of origin and with European countries is the only way forward.

The migrants who arrived in Cornwall came by powerboat by the way Primrose53, not by dinghy. Do you have a plan for how the authorities might scrutinise the millions of boats arriving in UK harbours each year?

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 12:23:41

Arriving- but decreasing significantly in number.

Different parties have different approaches to the measures they put/would put in place. It can't be argued that Labour Party measures are working much more successfully than the Conservative Party measures.

Maremia Tue 29-Sept-26 14:00:55

A ' huge' but diminishing number is arriving, and being dealt with more efficiently than by the Tories.
👏 to Labour for that.

sundowngirl Tue 29-Sept-26 14:05:47

While the drop in arrivals is a start, the reality is that since 2018 only 9.5K illegals arriving on small boat have actually been deported—and 76% of those were voluntary departures. Has anyone ever seen footage of a mass deportation? The endless appeals process still sends a clear message to anyone waiting on the beaches: once you make it across, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll ever be removed."

sundowngirl Tue 29-Sept-26 14:07:25

Casdon - They don't have to be 'determined', they just have to get in a boat and they will be safely escorted here
