“Tommo” has been arrested for the slashing of the dinghy, he appeared in court today and denied bail.

A Syrian migrant appeared in court accused of raping a 15 year old schoolgirl and sexually assaulting another teenager.

He has been bailed until his hearing on 1 August 2028!

We could argue all day long as to wether Tommo should have done what he did, the point is he going to spend his first night in prison when a potential paedophile and rapist is not behind bars and could disappear in the 22 months before his trial.

This is why so many people are so angry, it Lucy Connolly all over again.

The new EU Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (AMMR) would work to obviate the need to cross by small boat.

It includes a "solidarity mechanism" which establishes a system to ensure a fairer sharing of responsibility among EU countries.

As I understand it, it doesn’t mean the UK would have to apply to rejoin the EU as there are third-country precedents, Iceland, Norway etc but it would need a formal, negotiated treaty which would mean signing up to the whole package, as it were, without a vote on future changes in policy.

It would seem to solve the issue of boats crossing from France. If the UK were to be determined as the country responsible for processing, those persons would be transported safely.

However, it still wouldn’t solve the problem of how to accommodate asylum seekers while their application is being processed, although the transit through the system should be quicker as some of the preliminary work will have been done in the Member State of first entry.

As always, both on here and in RL, the minute certain subjects arise, we appear to split into two distinct fractions, and then immediately following this some utterly ludicrous “accusations” follow.

I agree that the “word” racist is bandied around, so which expression would you prefer we use to describe those who really really don’t want migrants (I know some of you will deny it is all migrants, but in reality, not necessarily on this site, there are people who would happily “rid us” of all migrants, to them I say “check your own DNA”), anyway think of an appropriate expression and I’ll happily use it.

So then we have the ridiculous suggestions (or accusations), that those of us who do support the legality of Asylum Seekers to arrive via irregular means in this country, wish hundreds and thousands of them to come arrive and all settle here.

Not true, most of us do recognise it’s an issue which needs resolving. Whilst we also acknowledge that this government is making inroads, simply not quickly enough. 43% drop in actual people arriving.

I’m yet to meet anyone either on here, or in RL who “welcomes” anyone who is a criminal.

In reality, of the 280,000 AS processed and given leave to remain to date, since 2021, a very small % have committed appalling crimes.

The AS given leave to remain still make up less than 1% of our entire population.

Muslims make up 6% of the UK’s population, mainly in England and with Birmingham, Manchester and London, (incl Greater London) having the most Muslims as part of their population, 32%, 23% and 15% respectively.

Because some of us have met and worked alongside both AS and Muslims, doesn’t mean we hate our country or fellow countrymen nor support extremist terrorism in any form, ever.

In exactly the same way as those of us who support Gaza, certainly do not support Hamas, nor do we “hate” any Jewish people.

Personally, I loathe extremism in any form.

It’s my belief, and very much a personal view, that the biggest issue in our country currently is the rise of the Far-Right. Both Reform and Restore are far-right and the “groups” who whilst not personally and politically linked with these parties, “Patriot Platform”, “The Pink Ladies” etc,. Are far more of an issue than the very people they are busy highlighting and actively being aggressive towards.

Once AS set foot on terra firma and register for Asylum, like it or not, they are not in the UK “illegally”.

Only my view (thought the actual info is factual, Sunday rant over.

I would just add, anyone breaking our laws, whoever they are, whatever “reasons” they have done so, needs to accept the consequences of their own actions, and any victims rightfully looked after.

If Reform are far right it must follow that Labour are far left.

But in reality it is Restore who are far right and Greens far left.

Peacelilydilly Sun 27-Sept-26 10:58:51

Had the French coastguard officials not been there, Thomas would likely have left the debris of a deflated rib floating in the Channel where it would have been a danger to other shipping especially at night

Irrelevant/speculation the French were there.

He tried to prevent French officials from doing their job which is to seize the boat, returning it to French shore where it would be destroyed safely to prevent

They did take it away.

I had to double check the meaning there Oreo grin.
I dont even know how much use the terms left and right are anymore. I think people are divided into 'politiical' groups but I am not longer sure how to classify them.
For example if someone is outspoken on the gender issue then they also tend to be opposed to assisted dying, they also tend to be someone who highlights the current anti semitism amongst some groups. What I am trying to say is it is often easy to predict where people stand on one issue because of their views on another unrelated issue. But this isnt easily divided into left and right anymore.

What? Read the reports including what was said in court.

A French coastguard official was on board when Thomas allegedly slashed at the vessel. (BBC)

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6eq8e98wnr7o

The prosecutor Kevin Lucie, outlining the basis of the criminal damage charge, alleged Thomas slashed an adrift boat with a knife.

When asked about the boat, Lucie confirmed he was unsure if the damage was worth more or less than £5,000, and said: “Unfortunately, it is the case that it did go back to France. We have asked for the cost of the damage.” (Guardian)

I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the prosecutor asking about the cost of the damage. The boat did not belong to the French Authorities but presumably to a trafficker and the French themselves slash boats.
The cost of the damage is surely irrelevant?

Graphite Sun 27-Sept-26 13:03:31

In cases of criminal damage the potential penalty depends on whether the value of the goods is up to £5,000 or over £5,000.

Property belongs to another if someone has custody or control - which the French authorities had.

No it doesn’t! Both Reform and Restore are far right.

Green are left.

We have no far left parties in this country.

You are at liberty to disagree, but I’m afraid you might find, on this point, you are actually incorrect.

Why must it follow Labour are “far left” because Reform are “far right”?

Why the correlation or connection?

Labour are left, and I’d actually argue in years not so long ago, more like centre left.

Conservatives are Right.

LibDems are Centre, but possibly left leaning.

Green are definitely left of centre, but most certainly not far left.

Restore and Reform are most definitely far right.

It’s not rocket science.

I think pretty much sums up far-left and far-right

You decide. I shouldn’t tell any of you what’s right and wrong!

Apologies

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far-right_politics

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left%E2%80%93right_political_spectrum

Whilst Wiki isn’t 100% accurate, it does highlight the distinguishing features of far-left and far-right.

Apologies again for insisting anyone else was incorrect, sometimes my passion for some subjects gets the better of me.

I guess it’s all down to our interpretation partially, and facts.

Galaxy Sun 27-Sept-26 14:49:11

I dont know whether far left describes the Greens, they are so wrapped up in identity politics it is difficult to unpick.

Latest from BBC:

'Anti-migrant activist Daniel Thomas has been refused bail during a crown court hearing over the alleged slashing of a dinghy in the English Channel.

Thomas, known to his supporters as Danny Tommo, appeared via videolink at Portsmouth Crown Court accused of criminal damage after a video appeared to show him slashing at the boat with a knife. The 37-year-old, whose address was withheld by the court at a previous hearing, is also charged with failing to disclose the PIN to his phone.

He has been remanded in custody, with a provisional trial date set for 1 March 2027. Thomas was arrested after the video was live streamed on 22 September. The defendant, wearing a grey t-shirt and holding a copy of the Bible, did not enter a plea during the hearing but previously pleaded not guilty to both charges at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on Friday".

So he will remain in prison on remand until March now though seemingly has still not given his PIN code to the police, who of course will retain any mobile devices he had in his possession on arrest to download and investigate. The words of his own barrister appear to have now hit home as he not enter a "not guilty plea" in today's hearing.

That is his KC barrister's acknowledgement to the court last week that Tommo is looking at a likely custodial sentence for his actions in the video footage. He asked for a Crown Court trial specifically and now must wait until March until crown court space available- on remand.

That’s interesting, the Burnham bounce helped Labour but I think in the long run Reform themselves will bounce back.
Subjects such as criminals being released very early and very punitive measures towards those groups who protest about migrants will see to that.
