French school children on strike

I have just seen a report from BBC online that French students are striking and protesting in several places across France.

They are complaining about lack of teachers, conditions in school etc. Some have started fires outside school buildings.

Seems education is a victim of circumstances elsewhere not just UK

Exactions- I like love that word MartavTuarus.

Just looked up comparison of meaning in France and UK.

France - 'physical abuses, violence or atrocities committed against a population'

UK- The formal act of demanding or forcing a payment (taxes, fees or contribution) that is not legally owned.

I find use of language is fascinating 👍

MawsRosie- I agree- inflammatory and intentional. Wherever FGT got quote comes from opinion and is betrayed by political bias.

Nothing to see here / well according to mainstream media.

If you watch Tousi-TV on YouTube you'll get much better reporting....

👏👏👏love him

You do like your rumours and inflammatory conspiracy theories FGT! Here we go- AI Overview:

The unrest in Liège, Belgium, consists of student protests against education cuts and reforms, which spread from a larger secondary-school and university student movement in France. While rumours circulating online claim that the violence is being carried out specifically by second- and third-generation migrants Belgian authorities and media reports have not substantiated these claims attributing the unrest instead to student groups

Key Details of the Unrest
Core Grievances: The demonstrations are centred on education. In France, students are protesting teacher shortages, overcrowded classes, and deteriorating facilities. In Belgium, the protests are directed at the Wallonia-Brussels Federation government regarding budget cuts, education reforms, and tuition increases.
Spread and Escalation The movement spilled over from France to Liège on October 1, 2026. The spontaneous gatherings disrupted several schools, prompting temporary school closures. Some protests turned violent, involving vandalism, small fires, and clashes with police, resulting in dozens of administrative arrests.
Political Context In France, intelligence agencies and government officials accused the radical left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI) of encouraging the school blockades to gain political leverage, an accusation the party denies. In Belgium, demonstrations have been coordinated by independent student collectives opposing local funding cuts

We ALL have a political bias.

We have to accept and acknowledge it. And agree to disagree.

No degree of Schadenfreude from me Maw I assure you. Just a desire to read more accurate reporting of events in Paris.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 06-Oct-26 16:01:26

Surely none of us believe we are always told the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

The rise of social media, small videos and captured pics these days enable a much more robust discussion of events. Not just the force fed pap of old.

Casdon Tue 06-Oct-26 16:04:40

Some people do tend to fall for conspiracy theories and social media fed lies a lot more easily than others though. It’s not always easy to get to the facts of what has happened.

In France, intelligence agencies and government officials accused the radical left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI) of encouraging the school blockades to gain political leverage.

Marine Le Pen is very clear about that. Her middle paragraph here accuses Mélenchon of stoking the fires. He has to take the blame, she says.

MartavTaurus Tue 06-Oct-26 16:19:04

But then, she would say that!

Wonder where your preferred news source conspiracy theorist got that none verified second and third generation migrant information from. Did someone go round asking to see passports and ask family history?! 😂😅

I wonder how many Gransnet posters are second or third generation and what that has to do with the price of eggs 🤷‍♀️

AI Overview:

Official statistics for the UK do not track an official total count for third-generation migrants, and comprehensive multi-generational data across all groups are not centrally published in a single census tally. However, official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Migration Observatory provide clear breakdowns for first-generation and second-generation populations:

First-Generation Migrants, Foreign-Born
• Total Population: Approximately 13.1 million people living in the UK were born overseas (as of mid-2024 data published via the House of Commons Library), which accounts for roughly 19% of the total UK population.
• Top Countries of Origin:
• India (~965,000)
• Poland (~841,000)
• Pakistan (~654,000)
• Romania (~558,000)
• Ireland (~387,000)
* Second-Generation Migrants, i.e. UK-Born with Foreign-Born Parents*
• Definition: Individuals born in the UK who have at least one (or both) parents born outside the UK.
• Scale & Demographics: While the ONS does not maintain a single cumulative headcount labeled strictly as "second-generation," large subsets are measured through ethnic minority and birth data. For instance, more than one in three children born in England and Wales have a foreign-born mother, and millions of UK-born citizens belong to ethnic minority groups established by post-1945 migration waves (such as Indian, Pakistani, Black Caribbean, and Black African communities).
Third-Generation Migrants, ie UK-Born Children of Second-Generation

You then share blatant, inaccurate, conspiracy based non factual theories.

Somewhat harsh and dismissive LemonJam possibly because it doesn’t fit with your own political bias maybe?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 06-Oct-26 16:26:45

Perhaps you’re right (many of you on here). Maybe I am swayed by uncensored or unverified accounts?

Doesn’t make them wrong though does it?

That's my view and description. It up to you how you view and describe the content of your post ,e.g. this one an example.

Why are people just talking about Paris? This is right across France. I have been following the reports about the regions I know best in the Ouest France newspaper. The size of the turnout is huge in major cities.
I am not sure Paris would give you the whole picture.
I was slightly amused showing a picture of one city where the march had paused for demonstrators to sit down at a table (complete with tablecloth) for lunch.
Interesting also to see so many parents involved.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 06-Oct-26 17:01:55

Well if you can't properly name a problem you will never deal with it.

I just think it’s always a good idea to get accounts from different sources, because then we can form our view with more substance behind it. It’s like when you’re buying something, some people are going to buy the latest TikTok trending item, and some are going to check every brand on the market before they commit.

Rennes and Vannes in Brittany are affected too. I looked up my old lycée and there's a couple of thousand outside protesting. Inland Brittany not so much, I asked about my goddaughter's DD who is doing a bac with equestrian studies and her school is completely untouched.

Also in Finistère.
Are they really not called les manifs anymore?

TerriBull Tue 06-Oct-26 17:36:01

I said it up thread when posts were in the initial stages, but increasingly I don't think politicians, such as the far left mayor of Saint-Denis, Independent Commune of North Paris should be encouraging what amounts to anarchic behaviour. Once it gets out of hand, people get injured, irresponsible! Others have said it on here, but bet there would be plenty of criticisms if this was a corresponding person from the far right. Both on the are equally dangerous.

Wyllow3 Tue 06-Oct-26 17:36:12

Maybe….FGT … since you mentioned it….I’m not suggesting a thesis, but it’s possible to say

“ I read that such and such” “
but don’t know if it’s verified?”

Cos all POV are of interest, and someone could check.

But not report them initially as Fact when you know it’s controversial?

(I would expect to be picked up for this too, not just you)

TerriBull Tue 06-Oct-26 17:36:54

Both on the extremes are equally dangerous.

A firework fired by the protesters has hit a baby in Paris.

I acknowledge what you say Wyllow but you credit me with too much thought (a bear of little brain).

My posts on N&P are often ‘scattergun’ approach.
Mostly ignored I’m sure which is fine.

Links, cross checking etc isn’t my style which I can appreciate must be highly irritating to some posters.

It’s just that I post as I would chat with my friends over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine!

Perhaps I ought to stick to ‘chat’ threads - more my level eh? 🤣
