The Nanny state may have gone too far…

Andy Burnham has told the public not to stockpile alcohol in the event of a national crisis.

The Prime Minister said it should not be a priority when preparing an emergency box of supplies
Under a new government campaign, households are being urged to stockpile food and water in case everyday services are disrupted by cyber attacks.
The guidance advises stocking up on three days’ worth of bottled water and non-perishable food, cash, and a battery or wind-up FM radio to receive updates during outages

Spoilsport sad

Wales has increased the minimum unit price of alcohol apparently, in line with Scotland which increased it to 65p two years ago.

Don't give Andy any ideas.
We will have to drown our sorrows somehow.

I’m sure many in Parliament have well stocked cellars, particularly if they have a large house in the countryside. Are those cellars considered stockpiling or are they just Connoisseurs?

Not to mention the House of Commons:

Financial YearSpend on Alcohol (£)
2024/25 £414,594
2025/26 £397,052

"To confirm, these purchases were made using public funds as part of the operation of the House of Commons catering service. "

I've got a stock of Ambrosia custards and rice puddings that have been on Nectar price in Sainsbury's for a few weeks!! 😂

We bought a 2-burner gas camping stove for emergencies some years ago. I must ask my husband what safe and accessible place he's hidden it in 🤦🏼

Well apparently we gave it to our daughter, as they want to start going camping 🙄

PollyEsther to quote your earlier post... It was jokey banter. 😉
(I also have a stock of bottled water).

This government are despicable, all sitting in their ivory towers , using expenses to live whilst telling the people to start stock piling, how many can afford to stock pile, they are so our of touch with the everyday person. Shame on them.

Oh dear- SOH bypass?

^I don't think tea or coffee made with wine would be very palatable.^

Wine would be more use than tea or coffee in a power cut though 🍷👀😉

You could make tea or coffee on a camping stove.

Alcohol dehydrates, so wouldn't be much use as a primary source of fluid.

The government would get more criticism if it didn't prepare people for emergencies. That really would be sitting in an ivory tower.

I can't imagine why he would have said that. Maybe he's worried about a mass of raving drunks looning around the streets? Well, they'll soon get through their stashes, won't they? Then he can move on to worrying about street protests because booze has become scarce...

I read that Burnham said that wine shouldn't be out first port of call in an emergency. Rayner was joking about getting wine in her emergency stock.

That's also what I read. It was jokey banter.

I always maintain a good stock of water that also contains hops and barley in convenient cans.

😂😂

I agree PollyEsther in fact the BBC quote him as saying ‘a bottle of wine would probably help after all the hard work’.
Still, why spoil a good story with facts.

Why indeed 😂🤣😂🤣😂

Wine will help eke out the bottled water.

Shame on you for not following orders from above!!! He obviously has more of a grip on weather forecasts than minions like us do. I will not be doing anything.

What a prat he is.

All I've seen is some banter between him and Angela Rayner about what they'd want in their emergency supplies. If that comment is based on that, it's a bit harsh and has missed the point, I think.
