commencing with obliterating the dreaded and entirely unnecessary use of the word 'up', eg.listen up, park up, first up, next up and the most hideous - meet up.

What I ask is wrong with the correct versions: listen, park, first, next, meet.

Over to you....

PS Tomorrow the siXth May, listen to most of the TV presenters saying SITH!

jimswifein1964 Thu 05-May-11 16:59:35

Ah, there will be so much to add to this thread! Although my personal hatred is for 'yeah?' on the end of every statement grin

Have to say though, I've never heard anyone on tv say 'sith' - will be paying close attention tonight now!

GiGi Thu 05-May-11 17:46:49

And what about people who say 'can I get' rather than 'can I have' or 'may I have' or even 'two [insert desired item] please' when ordering coffee, sandwiches etc?

jangly Thu 05-May-11 19:02:13

And you don't get the phone or the door. You answer them.

Notsogrand Thu 05-May-11 19:54:50

And I would 'have' please....not I would 'of' ......

6babymaker Thu 05-May-11 22:22:51

I think they say 'sikth' instead of sixth.
Before I spotted this thread I wrote a grammar concern in 'Am I being unreasonable' so look there too!

Oh What Joy! A pedants' corner. (Note correct use of apostrophe) I think we are an endangered species - but can be Grumpy Old Grannies with much relish on this site. Look forward to it. smile

Despairing...do not forget "heads up", as in "give you a heads up".

Er, point out? alert you?

supernana Fri 06-May-11 14:26:49

...and then there is the constant use of the word "like"...And she said, like, so I thought, like, it was, like...I may have to scream, like!!!

twinklepickers Fri 06-May-11 14:31:07

If I get one more card with 'thankyou' (one word) written on it I may actually vomit on the sender.

AngelaM Fri 06-May-11 15:49:15

What about 'for free' and what is an 'invite'?

supernana Fri 06-May-11 16:04:08

...and how about, "I'll give you a bell...(telephone call)

supernana Fri 06-May-11 16:10:14

Misuse of the expression "to pressurise someone", rather than "to pressure someone" (ie into doing something). To pressurise means to insert a bicycle pump into an orifice, and inflate.....ouch!

chrissysimmo Fri 06-May-11 17:15:15

the one that really makes me mad is use of 'less' for 'fewer' as in newsreaders (and anyone else) who say less police, less friends, (the supermarket) 'less than 10 items' errrgh!!

mizzi Fri 06-May-11 18:20:35

I mourn the death of the adverb and the 'or not' in whether or not, To me the sentence always sounds unfinished sad

Liese Fri 06-May-11 18:42:41

Me too, not a day goes by without less being substituted for fewer. Very soon it will disappear altogether. And what about alright instead of all right!

nannym Fri 06-May-11 18:59:18

The problem seems to start in schools with teachers ignoring basic grammar and punctuation and concentrating on"the content" of essays. I'm sorry if I offend any teachers (or ex teachers) but surely emphasis needs to be put on the importance of grammar and punctuation at an early age? There is a shop in my town that offers "Euro's at an unbeatable rate" and I couldn't resist going in and asking what the euro was offering. I might as well have been speaking a foreign language, and even after I had explained about the apostrophe I still felt that my pearls of wisdom had fallen on incredibly stoney ground!

habari Fri 06-May-11 20:12:57

And where did the use of 'mine' and 'yours' to denote homes come from. As in "shall we have coffee at mine or yours?"

dolphin Fri 06-May-11 20:43:33

How about 'you know' at the end of every sentence? No, I don't know, presumably that is why I am being told.

And the one that really depresses me is different to - "No, different FROM" I shout at the radio several times a day!

Divawithattitude Fri 06-May-11 21:22:14

Let's not!!!!

Jane Fri 06-May-11 21:26:22

My experience as a teacher was that younger teachers actually didn't know these things. They had never been taught at school.

Divawithattitude Fri 06-May-11 21:35:12

As my linguist son tells me constantly, language changes and develops, the meaning of words change,,,,,,,,,,,,does it really matter for F*&*S sake( so as not to offend those who abhor searing).

There is a section here for pedants to post in ......just in case anyone is interested.

Divawithattitude Fri 06-May-11 21:37:07

Oh goodness, I have just noticed that is where we are.

and just to clarify, I meant swearing...................

Divawithattitude Fri 06-May-11 21:38:18

Giggling at someone 'mourning the death of the adverb'

MrsDjangoDog Fri 06-May-11 22:28:01

May I point out that almost all of these forum threads are about misuse of vocabulary rather than bad grammar. Personally, I think the latter is more important and that the lack of good vocabulary has always been apparent in most people's speech.
