Exasperated!

A woman on Breakfast this morning said a situation was 'exasperated' by something or another (no idea what, I was so exasperated!)

The thing is, I keep hearing it. It's almost as bad a 'pacific' rather than 'specific' shock

I like "mellifluous". I hate "canker".

I hate 'at this moment in time'. What's wrong with 'now'? smile

There is a skellington sitting on my chimley [I had to tell a friend that these words were wrong, and that only Dick Van Dyke would use them!!!!]

The thing that irritates me most is the use of "I" where it should be "me", eg "goodbye from johnny and I". It happens so much on TV, I really don't understand why TV people are so reluctant to (correctly) use "me".

I do have a degree of sympathy for those talking "on the hoof", as it were, when they get things wrong. I would have trouble getting the right words at all. I will always remember the faux pas of that most articulate of men James Naughtie with regard to the former culture secretary James Hunt.

My big "beef" with presenters nowadays is poor sentence syntax, which leads to ambiguous meanings. I hear them all the time even on Radio 4. shock shock

It made me laugh to hear someone saying "I must get something to eat. I'm absolutely ravishing."

Nice to know I am not alone with my hate of 'nucular' it sets my teeth on endge. I used to work for a nuclear technology company.

I was wondering that too confused

elizahugh Fri 18-Oct-13 11:42:58

no

I get exasperated when I hear otherwise quite intelligent people saying 'nucular' instead of 'nuclear', though it wasn't too surprising that George W Bush committed that faux pas.

I have just been on a training course where the (very young, though I'll try not to hold that against her) trainer kept using the word 'insiduous'. I'm afraid I could no longer take anything she said seriously.

The afternoon session was led by a very old and rather frail academic who was a joy to listen to. He used nothing to supplement his presentation except his notes and his obviously very keen intellect. It was like a visit to the past smile

Just read in a medical report

'she has therefore been initiated onto medication'confused

janthea Fri 22-Jun-12 16:18:06

absentgrana I heard the conversation, but wasn't watching and just caught a glimpse of the 'hat'.

elizahugh Fri 22-Jun-12 15:58:09

She said the situation became exasperated or something like that. I noticed it too - I think her job is something to do with education!

greenmossgiel Fri 22-Jun-12 15:50:30

A woman on the telly the other night seemed to want to keep saying 'vigil' .....however, she didn't say 'vigil' - she said 'vidual'...confused

absentgrana Fri 22-Jun-12 13:43:38

janthea No, she was someone else all together – just wore a similar sort of hat.

janthea Fri 22-Jun-12 12:45:39

Irene114 I agree with you. And how about 'bored of' instead of 'bored with', and 'I should of' instead of 'I should have'.

janthea Fri 22-Jun-12 12:44:10

absentgrana I heard the same programme and realised that she had used the wrong word. I would have thought she was used to be interviewed. Isn't she Camilla Batmanghelidj, founder of the Kids Company?

Irene114 Fri 22-Jun-12 12:40:20

I get annoyed when I hear
different to instead of different from
a bit of water instead of a drop of water
and the letter aitch being pronounced as Haitch.
