O boy! - it is so annoying! I do not mind so much when you hear these things in normal conversations, but when it is in the media, you just wonder what the editors are doing!
Alternate instead of alternative is the one that irritates me.

The woman who made this mistake was being interviewed – she is not a media person but someone involved in an organisation that provides free breakfasts for schoolchildren. She paused for a couple of seconds before she said exasperated as if she was trying to think of the right word. Clearly, she had exacerbated in the back of her mind, but couldn't get it to the front in time. A television studio can be an intimidating place when you are unfamiliar with how it all works and nervous about getting your point across. I think you're being a bit harsh in this instance.

Sounds as if the poor lady's nervousness was exacerbated by he siruation she was in.

Doing well in live TV interviews takes training and/or practice. Did listeners understand what the woman was saying? If so, why worry? I think I'd get my worms words in a muddle on breakfast TV.

I wouldn't mind at all if exacerbate wasn't one of my all time favourite words that I like to hear pronounced as often as possible!
