Hi everyone. Can I tell you my most disliked word? It's Pulchritudinous. I always felt it conjured up something rotting; so, I don’t know why: so far from its actual meaning.

Nestle down in your nid, jeni! Goodnight smile

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 22:49:12

Too tired! Even my taxi driver said I was pale and looking tired. And whats more, quiet!!!
Goodnight!

Anne58 Thu 21-Jun-12 22:24:04

Think about it, jeni !

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 22:15:57

confused

Anne58 Thu 21-Jun-12 22:08:16

Nidification, ther's another one. Very useful for best man speeches, used judiciously.

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 22:03:27

Oh yes!smilegrin

Anne58 Thu 21-Jun-12 22:01:03

concupiscence, now there's a word!

nanaej Thu 21-Jun-12 20:20:53

'very unique' is my pet hate ..with off of ..but I have said that previously!

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 17:34:46

Onamatapeatic? Itoo tired to spell tonite!

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 17:33:27

I use exacerbation all the time, as in, his condition was exacerbated by exposure to fumes!

I love troglodyte as well, it's somehow omnapeatic!

Bags Thu 21-Jun-12 17:26:18

Troglodyte is one of my favourites too smile

effblinder Thu 21-Jun-12 17:24:50

I wouldn't mind at all if exacerbate wasn't one of my all time favourite words that I like to hear pronounced as often as possible!

That and troglodyte. grin

Doing well in live TV interviews takes training and/or practice. Did listeners understand what the woman was saying? If so, why worry? I think I'd get my worms words in a muddle on breakfast TV.

kittylester Thu 21-Jun-12 11:08:20

absent I take your point but she repeated the mistake again later - why not just say 'is made worse by'.

Bags Thu 21-Jun-12 10:33:15

And the gransnet siruation is very exacerbating!

Bags Thu 21-Jun-12 10:32:42

Sounds as if the poor lady's nervousness was exacerbated by he siruation she was in.

Let's not get exasperated about it wink

absentgrana Thu 21-Jun-12 10:24:30

The woman who made this mistake was being interviewed – she is not a media person but someone involved in an organisation that provides free breakfasts for schoolchildren. She paused for a couple of seconds before she said exasperated as if she was trying to think of the right word. Clearly, she had exacerbated in the back of her mind, but couldn't get it to the front in time. A television studio can be an intimidating place when you are unfamiliar with how it all works and nervous about getting your point across. I think you're being a bit harsh in this instance.

less instead of fewer

Mishap Thu 21-Jun-12 09:50:04

O boy! - it is so annoying! I do not mind so much when you hear these things in normal conversations, but when it is in the media, you just wonder what the editors are doing!
Alternate instead of alternative is the one that irritates me.

Ariadne Thu 21-Jun-12 09:48:07

Oh, exacerbated!

"Mute" instead of "moot" too!

susiecb Thu 21-Jun-12 09:47:26

and my favourte ' deteriated'!

kittylester Thu 21-Jun-12 09:37:03

A woman on Breakfast this morning said a situation was 'exasperated' by something or another (no idea what, I was so exasperated!)

The thing is, I keep hearing it. It's almost as bad a 'pacific' rather than 'specific' shock
