Agree with grrrranny ' Horrible things cupcakes- garishly-coloured, thickly-iced with butter icing . Just the look of them makes me feel queasy' The texture of the cake -as with American muffins is revolting.- nothing like the crispy sponge of freshly-baked 'butterfly cakes' I used to make with my DDs.
I do like cake but prefer a solid chunky fruit cake,flapjack or maybe a lemon drizzle cake.

A friend of my mother who was born in Gibraltar and had Spanish as her first language was deeply offended when she first moved to Britain and a neighbour took one look at her beautiful blonde baby daughter and said "Oh how fair she is!". To her "fer" meant ugly.

When my late MiL who came from Yorkshire asked 'is he bonny', about our son, she meant chubby and it was meant to be a good thing. I suppose it was a compliment for her generation who had known hunger and deprivation.

Yes, it definitely was a compliment. My Yorkshire grandma would always say of plump babies 'Isn't he/she bonny?' with a big beam - it was considered a good thing to have a well-rounded baby.

Right enough, Anagram - in the 50's,if a child was plump (bonny), it was a nice thing to be, after all the rationing etc. However, knowing my grandma, she did mean 'fat'....!

Wow, that brought back memories! The stall owners seemed to be the same people for years and years, I used to buy some on my way back from shopping in town when I was a teenager in Derby in the 70's. I have never seen them for sale down south where I live now.
On the cup cake debate, I have just made up a quantity of buttercream to ice 24 little cakes ( previously known as fairy cakes) and realised that shop bought expensive cup cakes use the same quantity just to ice one cake - 150g butter and 150g of icing sugar!
