This expression was used three times in quick succession on Today this morning. Once it meant 'in future' (so why didn't he say that?). Twice it meant nothing at all. The other meaningless expression around at the moment is 'to be fair'. Sometimes it seems to mean 'to be honest'. Where do these expressions come from? And why do they spread so quickly?

We'll we can be troublesome can't we? If in doubt ask GNHQ!

Mine too, from a Scottish school - and I remember singing the Vagabond King song in a school show when I was in my teens. It is still one of my best rousing singalongs for driving alone, although with lots of dum-di-dums for forgotten words. Many thanks for the lyrics!

Gaudeamus igitur,
Juvenes dum sumus;
Post icundum iuventutem,
Post molestam senectutem
Nos habebit humus. Let us therefore rejoice,
While we are young;
After our youth,
After a troublesome old age
The ground will hold us.

Perhaps not such a great choice for Gransnet? ......

Used to be our school song!

Joan Fri 24-Jan-14 01:18:19

It was sung by the university choir at my (late in life) graduation at the University of Queensland. I thought it was magic - a sort of connection to mediaeval times. I did Latin at school so the words make sense.

Would be a nice anthem for us, wouldn't it - though the juvenes bit is rather wishful thinking. Full words and translation:-

WOW!

I think we should adopt it as the GN anthem.!

Let us rejoice for we are young!

merlotgran Thu 23-Jan-14 23:28:05

A good bit of rousing!

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 23:12:09

Ah!
The vagabond king by Frumi

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 22:26:53

No! It was a musical. The verse ends 'And to hell with Burgundy'
Never agreed with that as it's my favourite wine.
Love' nights without George'

Onward Christian soldiers, Galen...?

(Don't remember the Equality one at all)

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 21:32:13

Onward, onward, fight against the foe
Forward fore ward, see our banners go!
Or something like that?

And to those of us who remember the womens lib virtual party!

Equality!
Swing, swing, swing ye along!

Joan Thu 23-Jan-14 21:21:27

Ha Ha.

Yes, I AM one of those pedantic people who rub our the greengrocer's apostrophe when passing his chalk board.

I just can't help myself.

margaretm74 Thu 23-Jan-14 20:23:36

don't you mean present's? (sorry, couldn't resist)

Joan Thu 23-Jan-14 04:47:21

Well, it's my birthday so I always get cards and presents!! In fact when i was a skinny spotty early teenager, the postman used to look at me all puzzled, wondering what secret attractions I had!!

I find soppiness embarrassing though, so there isn't much of the hearts and flowers stuff around me.

margaretm74 Wed 22-Jan-14 19:13:19

Are any of you planning anything for Valentines? (Grrrr)

Icyalittle Wed 22-Jan-14 17:29:22

Mamie that's brilliant. grin
Iam that present continuous is one of my pet hates - sorry! Too many syllables to say the same as 'I love it'. I am very pedantic....

janeainsworth Wed 22-Jan-14 15:01:24

Mamie good one smile
gally yes I'm in Virginia at the moment, 6" of snow and the bluest, brightest sky ever.
Which is why I'm on GN at the same time as you, but the day before, IYSWIM.

Synchronicity was my most hated management-speak word.
I am very proud of my dead pan delivery of "No matter how far we push the envelope it will still be stationery" though. (Pedants may be able to hear the difference between ery and ary, but it was good enough for my audience).

Iam64 Wed 22-Jan-14 11:50:27

LOL when! No irony there then.
"on a journey together" is another of my favourites, especially when used by new managers to staff groups who have been on that journey for some years.

whenim64 Wed 22-Jan-14 11:47:00

That was to your earlier post, Iam
