I think this chap is putting the opposite point of view - that language is about common usage and understanding and shouldn't be so rule-based.

As long as he doesn't say it's okay to use "off of", or "of" instead of "have".

Isn't a pedant something you wear on a chain around your neck?

DD will love this book. As will DBH. I shall just filch their copies. I am too lazy to be a proper pedant, I just laugh.

Thanks, FarNorth, for saving me the trouble of taking bags to task!

Thatbags I thought the same as you! - as in "a must for ( we who are) pedants". This could start a whole new thread grin

Light bulb moment. Thanks, farnorth!

FarNorth Wed 18-Feb-15 21:22:53

No - imagine the sentence without the word 'pedants'. Is this book a must for us?
Simples!

thatbags Wed 18-Feb-15 21:18:33

Shouldn't that be "we pedants"? <ducks behind settee>

janeainsworth Wed 18-Feb-15 16:14:27

Ooh yes Anno. I was tempted to buy with one click, and probably will.

Do you think that the younger generation have pedants amongst them?

Ana Wed 18-Feb-15 16:04:50

Isn't Oliver Kamm one of the two blokes arguing pedantic points with each other on the thread thatbags started a few days ago?

I think his book would be rather too highbrow for me!

Is this book a 'must' for us pedants? Or will it simply confirm what we knew all along? Are the people who buy such books the ones who don't really need them?
