Haitch for aitch is my absolute bugbear too. And joolery for jewellery. And seckertry for secretary. Susstificate. Oh now see what you've done, Ethel, I was having a nice peaceful evening!

They should bring back correct speaking announcers like Alvar Liddell. Everyone could understand him.

I don't think speaking English is a requisite for announcers these days !!
I was brung up with Frank Muir and Godfrey something !!

During Wimbledon weeks I heard TV announcers saying strawbries. they should be strawberries. TV announcers should speak perfect English.
I too hate people who say Haitch. Its H (huh).

my fault I always say pronounciation as I thought pronunciation was a shortened version of it. After all you pronounce something don't you.

A lot of words can be very different in different accents. In Norfolk we eat samwidges and I'd always assssumed people who said Haitch were just furreners, it's a difficult line.

I see Chelseababy beat me to it - I type very slowly sometimes grin

One that bugs me is the mispronunciation of pronunciation - why do so many people say (and spell) it as if it were pronounciation, with an 'ou' in it?

Was that a typo in the thread title?

Sorry, I couldn't resist - this is pedants' corner, after all grin

So am sitting here ( I live alone ! ) saying 'sandwich, strawberry, Matalan! My most disliked pronunciation is people who say 'Haitch ' for H !!!

chelseababy Tue 08-Sept-15 20:06:08

As its pedants' corner shouldn't it be pronunciation?

I really hate to see commonly used words being mispronounced
Toady I had an argument about how to say Benal Madena (the spanish resort). I used to write to a relative who lived there and it was said lke it was spelt but several people have called it Bellamadena. Can anyone tell me the correct way to pronounce it.
I also live fairly near to a Matalan store and find my skin creeps to hear people shouting 'Im going to Mataland'.
Its the same with sandwich commonly pronounced saanwich, strawberry pronounced strawbry and many others .This has nothing to do with local dialect its just a lazy way of talking.
