To find the origin (of any word or phrase) just put "dilly dally" and "origin" into Google and you get "early 17th century: reduplication of dally."

Easy peasy.

There is of course the Marie LLoyd Music Hall song but "dilly dally2 was already in use well befor ethat.

Could be interesting, anno, although at the risk of sounding like Maggie Smith's dowager alter ego, many questions about origins and definitions are easily accessed in a dictionary - or for those who prefer, online!

Do you think there's any chance of getting Susie Dent (of Countdown fame) to do a web chat? She would certainly be overwhelmed with questions.

"Dilly dally" simply means to waste time, procrastinate, mess about instead of getting on with something.
The origin is presumably connected with "delay" so nothing making , except not knowing something in common parlance.
