...when people say, " the proof is in the pudding"?

Nelliemoser Sat 09-Apr-16 09:23:24

"I want answers." Really annoys me.

"Comfort zone"

Lessons will be learned.

Fit for purpose

Verbs used in place of nouns, for instance, Invite for "invitation", a big ask etc
Oh and the interminable loose for "lose" ( they don't even SOUND. the same!) Bah humbug!

pinkwallpaper Fri 08-Apr-16 20:13:56

"What's that all about". That really annoys me. No good reason just drives me mad.

I hate the expression of very busy people who 'juggle' with their lives (it refers mainly to women). To me it brings a mind boggling picture of women throwing their babies/bosses/shopping trollies, etc, up in a high arch, and frantically scrabbling around trying to catch themshock

What about "bored of" and "fed up of" This change of the expression is quite recent. In my day it was always "bored with" and "fed up with"

How do these changes happen?

Well, the eyebrows are good!

Ana Mon 28-Mar-16 16:09:57

Doesn't exactly look like him though, does it? grin

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 16:04:37

Off thread but couldn't resist. Get your knitting needles out, folks.

MiniMouse Mon 28-Mar-16 12:47:39

NTO grin

pompa I think you meant NTO, but my singing's best drowned out, too grin

pompa Mon 28-Mar-16 12:27:56

Min Mouse, best to join an uku club, that way you don't have to sing or you are drowned out anyway (which is why I joined a club)

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 11:31:01

Took me a while to get that one, Mini. I thought you'd missed the d off 'and' and then I wondered if Dandy Murray was a footballer I had not heard of. I don't know about you but I should definitely get out more.

(Off thread - I have just been looking at knitting patterns on-line and do you know you can knit an Andy Murray?!!)

MiniMouse Mon 28-Mar-16 11:08:44

Oh dear, another one - on the sports report, ' ..... an Dandy Murray will be playing .....' Do they not teach them any more at the Beeb?

(Note to self - I should get out more)

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 10:46:49

PS That's also the BBC and probably others.

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 10:46:03

And what about 'return back' as in 'they have now been returned back to their homes'.

MiniMouse Mon 28-Mar-16 10:37:52

Here comes another BBC one, " .... so please check your trains prior before you travel." hmm

NotTooOld Mon 28-Mar-16 10:24:17

Minimouse - 'reported by the coast' grin

Pompa - I tried to learn the ook once but I was hopeless because the teacher made us sing along and I can't sing. Or maybe it was because I mispronounced it as yook!

pompa Mon 28-Mar-16 10:17:20

LOL, you are, only ukulele players would think to say ook. It's because it is an Hawaiian word, which translates roughly to jumping flea.

annsixty Mon 28-Mar-16 09:22:13

Well pompa we learn something everyday on GN. I never knew it was wrong to say yookelele and I must be one of millions.

pompa Mon 28-Mar-16 08:41:48

People who say yukulele rather than ukulele, pronounced ookulele.

Stansgran Mon 28-Mar-16 08:22:39

Blue sky thinking. My SIL says "I'm good "and now the children say it. I've stopped asking him how he is.

seacliff Mon 28-Mar-16 07:59:53

People who start a sentence with So.

MiniMouse Mon 28-Mar-16 07:50:23

Heard on BBC weather report this morning, "Winds of 80 mph were reported this morning by the coast." Clever coast wink
