Are 'shite', 'sucks', and 'boobs' swear words?

Blinko Mon 20-Mar-17 09:05:15

Peaseblossom, couldn't agree more.

BlueBelle Mon 20-Mar-17 08:53:13

A boy who moves in on his friend/mate who is chatting up a girl by taking over the attention
A is chatting up B and C homes in and takes over B s attention, leaving A to either stand his ground or fight or skulk off Get it Riverwalk

Yes not a very nice expression but seems the 'in' one amongst youngsters I will add it was spoken by a very well brought child from a good family and no one showed any shock so obviously mainstream speak

Riverwalk Mon 20-Mar-17 07:44:20

Cock is such a horrible word - sounds aggressive. I'm still working out what a cock blocker is hmm

Anya Mon 20-Mar-17 07:25:35

That's horrible.

BlueBelle Mon 20-Mar-17 06:51:43

Well not a swear word as such but I heard a new one (to me) yesterday describing a boy, who had homed in on a girl who was in deep conversation with a boy who fancied her, as a cock blocker These were young teens (14-15) chatting so presume that's a newish description

I hate the word sucks and most annoying Americanisms and their spelling!

Blinko Sun 19-Mar-17 22:00:43

HootyMcO Hats off, I say!

I think Germaine Greer may well have been right when she said that cunt was the last verbal taboo. I suspect it may have been the first sexual taboo as well, as an early dictionary defined it as something along the lines of "a nasty word for a nasty thing".

Swear words are surely mostly derived from blasphemy and have a religious context. Someone above mentioned blimey. An American schoolfriend, when asked to put a Shakespearean speech into modern English, puzzled for a while over "Zounds". She tried to think of a commonly accepted modern blasphemous expression and, being American, eventually settled on Jesus H. Christ. I don't think she got an A.

For really weird swearing within a religious context, look up Québecois French usage (tabarnak).

Sexual "swearing" is a different kind of offensive, similar to other deeply unpleasant usages, such as nigger. Incidentally, the latter is still generally regarded as more offensive than cunt, even though some black people have gone further down the "reclaim" route than the Vagina Monologues with cunt.

The problem, if it is indeed a problem, is how the language keeps changing. I'm reading Swallows and Amazons to the children atm and one of the characters is called Titty. So every page has Titty went, Titty said, Titty moved etc. The children stifle their giggles but I must admit that I feel a bit uncomfortable using the word even though I know it was a totally innocent word when the book was written.

hulahoop Sun 19-Mar-17 19:58:31

We don't swear a lot just bugger and bloody mainly what I really hate is hearing parents f------ng and bli--in gin front of children my oh doesn't swear in front of me !

radicalnan Sun 19-Mar-17 19:12:30

Taught my kids to read painting willy and poo on the garage wall..........and bum

Elegran Sun 19-Mar-17 18:47:01

That is why bloody is a swear-word - people would swear an oath "by our Lady" that something was true, or that they promised to do something. ("I swear by Almighty God that the evidence I shall give will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God")

There were loads of similar oaths in the past - zounds! was "by God's wounds".

HootyMcOwlface Sun 19-Mar-17 18:41:00

blinko I could totally be making that up! Haha!

HootyMcOwlface Sun 19-Mar-17 18:39:14

Did you know that bloody is a corruption of By Our Lady - apparently!

Penstemmon Sun 19-Mar-17 18:29:44

I do swear when I am really pissed off or stub my fucking toe because shit, that hurts!! But most of the time I am a paragon of virtue. wink

My exceedingly prim mum would say, in moments of pain or frustration, "Bannisters, barristers and buckets of shit!"& she told name off big time when I was a child for saying 'Shut up'!

TBH it is more how something is said that is upsetting/rude than the words used!

Blinko Sun 19-Mar-17 18:26:00

'memes' pop up on my newsfeed ...blimey!

Ana Sun 19-Mar-17 18:20:15

Why would you want to 'bring yourself' to say either of those words? confused

Watching a film containing that sort of language is entirely different.

HootyMcOwlface Sun 19-Mar-17 18:18:55

Irish family here, and confirm a lot of shite spoken! Also the odd feck.
Don't like the c word either, but a friend 'likes' a post on a Facebook page call Little Miss C...y and 'memes' pop up on my newsfeed(?) (ooo get me with the lingo! Haha!) from time to time, and I have to say it can be quite funny - especially when they describe people you work with (and there are a few where I work!).

joannewton46 Sun 19-Mar-17 18:13:28

I do use occasional swear words but can never bring myself to say the C..t or f..k words. I've never been able to watch Pulp Fiction for that very reason.

Maggiemaybe Sun 19-Mar-17 17:40:22

Sorry, I can't read the whole long thread because I can't be bothered of my delicate sensibilities, so someone else may have said this. I've seen a couple of references to shite being of Irish origin. With my Durham origins, I reserve the right to say it when appropriate (ie most days) as it is definitely part of the Geordie lexicon. There used to be an old joke re a Geordie firm of solicitors - Hadaway & Shiteman.

grandMattie Sun 19-Mar-17 16:52:53

All very interesting, this swearing stuff.
The other day, DS2 told us that his colleagues at his factory found out that his sister was a vicar. They stopped swearing in front of him!!! Much laughter! grin

Blinko Sun 19-Mar-17 16:19:15

DS1 was heard muttering 'Stockings!' to himself as though it was a swear word. He was about four, I think.

Blinko Sun 19-Mar-17 16:17:26

I might on occasion say shite or feck, but never 'sucks'. I hate that word. American origin, I believe hmm. Boobs I would use in normal conversation. And never the 'c' word either. Totally nasty, imo.

Kim19 Sun 19-Mar-17 16:03:29
