I can't help muttering 'very funny place to have a door.'

Talking about 'tongue' Wildswan - I have a chaise longue but if you are looking for one online, you will see hundreds of instances of 'chaise lounge'.

Gauge is I think correct

It is of course gauge unless you are talking about greengages and addressing them by a familiar shortening of the full name

wildswan16 I do hope we don't slowly incorporate American spelling into our Language. Many years I ago I was a secretary in an American multinational company in Paris. My boss and I were forever waving our respective dictionaries at each other (mine was Oxford, his was Webster's). However, he always won because he would say, quite rightly, that he represented an American company. How I hated writing "dependents" instead of "dependants", though.

My English is pretty good I think but there are a few words I always have to think twice about when writing. Gauge is one of them, also rhythm and tongue. I do hope we don't slowly incorporate American spelling into our language.

Bit sharp Ana gauge is correct but it really annoys me in word games when they use the American version gage along with many other words omitting the letter 'u'
